♪PROFILE♪
William de Courcy is from Vancouver, Canada. He was working as a The de Courcy Brothers with his brother Johnny de Courcy, but William moved his base to the UK in London and began working as a model in earnest. He is active as a model for numerous brands and magazines. However, the job was to make music. He has composed soundtrack and performed playing piano for ALEXANDER MCQUEEN MEN ’S AW 2016-17 COLLECTION. And finally he released his first solo album in August 2019.

Many people may not know William. However, many people have already seen him. First, he is the subject of photographer Ryan McGinley’s ‘Floating Trees’. He is naked and sits on a tree floating in a large river. ‘I was scared. But Ryan told me to walk further to the end of the tree, “he laughed and told me about the shooting. In addition, he is not only loved by artists, but also for many designers. He has appeared as a model in many fashion shows (DIOR, VALENTINO, FENDI …). Of course, he has been published in the catalogs of famous magazines such as ID and DAZED. He has visited Japan four times, and every time he participated in magazines, advertisements, and catalogs for famous select shops. So if you are interested in art and fashion, you should have seen him.
He is popular as a model. However, he doesn’t see the model work as his real work. He recognizes himself as an artist and tries to devote his life to music. And in fact, he spends the money he earns on models for making music. He doesn’t like general bands. He likes classical music such as Bach and Brahms and true pop music such as The Beatles and David Bowie. He is in his mid 20s, but has been playing piano for 20 years. He is not only good at playing but also has good ears. That’s why he is severe in both the music he listens to and the music he makes.And he values dialogue with himself. He carries notebooks and Montblanc fountain pens and writes novels and diaries. And he always loves it. He is not interested in Fashion and Brands.
His first album was released in August. The title is ‘Music and Writing’. This work is not only a great album, but also has a rare value in the simple composition of piano performance and vocals. When he came to Japan in June 2019, he recorded at GOK SOUND in Kichijoji. He came to Japan for a model job, but the real purpose was to record here. William said “First of all I wanted to make an analog recording using Reel to Reel. I knew that the quality of Japanese recording was high. This studio and Kondo (GOK SOUND representative Yoshiaki Kondo) are especially famous, and I wanted to work with him.” Engineer Kondo is a veteran who has worked with many musicians in Japan and abroad, including Kahimikarii. William’s work was recorded, and up to Mix was done by Kondo. Mastering was done in London by Skye Mastering’s Denis Blackham. Denis is an industry celebrity who has mastered many famous artists such as T-Rex, Jimi Hendrix and Madness.
UK artist Dan Lyons introduced me to William in Japan in June. Dan has toured with William’s brothers in support of Peter Doherty. William used to be at the ‘Meikyokukissa（Famous Song Cafe）Lion’ in Shibuya and invited me. The store was also good for me, and after closing, I had a good time chatting with William and the staff. The lion’s classic DJ, Genki Sakuradani, is also a photographer and is also working on a cover photo for William. This shooting for single and album was done in Kondo’s studio.
Every song is great, but I want to recommend a cover song. The song ‘Play’ is a poetry reading that matches the piano performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. This Bach song is also famous for playing by Canada (same as William) pianist Glenn Gould. And the last song ‘Julia’. Who can cover this Beatles song so beautifully? I hope you enjoy his work.

今回ご紹介するWilliamを知らない方も多いかもしれません。しかしながら、多くの人が彼のことを既に見たことがあるはずです。まず彼は写真家Ryan McGinleyの’Floating Trees’の被写体になっています。彼は裸で、大きな川に浮かぶ木に腰をかけています。’怖かったよ。でもRyanは僕にもっと木の先端まで歩いてみてと言ったんだと”と撮影現場の状況を笑いながら話してくれました。加えて、彼はアーティスだけではなく、多くのデザイナーにも愛されています。彼は多くのファッションショー（ DIOR、VALENTINO、FENDI…）にモデルとして出演した経験がありますし、もちろんIDやDAZEDなど有名な雑誌にも登場しています。日本においても同様で、彼は4回来日したことがあり、その度に雑誌や広告、有名なセレクトショップのカタログ撮影にも参加しています。そのためアートやファッションに興味がある人なら、彼を見た経験があるというわけです。
彼はモデルとしてはかなり活躍している部類に入るでしょう。けれど彼は、モデルの仕事を本当の彼自身の仕事だとは思っていません。彼は自分自身をアーティストであると認識し、音楽に人生を捧げようと努めているのです。そして実際に、モデルで稼いだお金を音楽の制作に費やしていました。ただ彼は一般的なバンドは好きではありませんでした。BachやBrahmsといったクラシックミュージック、そしてThe BeatlesやDavid Bowieなど真のポップミュージックを愛好しています。20代中盤ではあるが、ピアノ歴は20年もあります。演奏が上手なだけでなく、耳が肥えているのでしょう。だから、聴く音楽に対しても、自身が作る音楽にもシビアなのです。また、彼は自分と対話することを大切にしているようで、ノートとモンブランの万年筆をいつも持ち歩き、小説や日記を書いています。そしてそれをいつも愛おしそうに抱えている。彼はモデルではありますが、ファッションやブランドに興味はないのです。
そんな彼の初めてのアルバムが、8月にリリースされました。タイトルは‘Music and Writing’。この作品は素晴らしいアルバムというだけでなく、ピアノ演奏とボーカルだけのシンプルな編成自体に希少価値があります。というのは彼の楽曲を聴くのはインディ／オルタナティヴロック愛好者が多いだろうし、そうした我々はバンド編成のサウンドを聴くことが多いからです。2019年6月にWilliamが来日した際、吉祥寺にあるGOK SOUNDでレコーディングを行いました。彼はモデルの仕事で日本に来たのですが、真の目的はここでレコーディングすることにありました。Williamは’まず僕はReel to Reelを使ったアナログレコーディングを絶対にしたかった。日本の録音の質は高いということは知っていた。特にこのスタジオとKondo（GOK SOUND代表の近藤祥昭さん）が有名で、彼と一緒に仕事をしたかったんだ’と語ってくれました。エンジニアの近藤さんは、カヒミカリィを初め国内外の多くのミュージシャンのミックスを手掛けたことがあるベテランです。Williamの作品は録音、Mixまでは近藤さんが行いました。そしてマスタリングはLondonにて、Skye MasteringのDenis blackhamが手掛けました。DenisはT-RexやJimi Hendrix、Madnessなど数多の著名アーティストのマスタリングを行ったことのある業界の著名人でもあります。
UKのアーティスト、Dan Lyonsが6月に来日中のWilliamのことを私に紹介してくれました。DanはWilliamの兄弟と、Peter Dohertyのサポートでツアーを回った経験があります。Williamはよく渋谷にある’名曲喫茶ライオン’にいて、私を招いてくれました。お店もまた私に良くしてくれて、閉店後、Williamとスタッフさん達で雑談をしたりと楽しい時間を過ごさせていただきました。その店のクラシックDJの櫻谷弦樹さんは写真家でもあり、Williamのジャケット写真の撮影も手掛けました。シングルやアルバムのカバー撮影は近藤さんのスタジオで行われたのです。
ある日、ライオンの閉店後、Williamはまるでコンサート会場のように大きく重厚感のあるスピーカーを通して、マスタリング前の曲を流してくれました。彼はよく自身の胸を叩きながら、’私は心に響く音楽が好きなんだ’といった旨のことを言っていましたが、私は彼がいかに本質にこだわっているかということを初めて理解したのです。この時の感動を忘れることはないでしょう。
どの曲も素晴らしいけれどカバー曲を私はおすすめします。’Play’という曲は、BachのGoldberg Variations(ゴルドベルグ変奏曲)のピアノ演奏に合わせた詩の朗読です。このBachの曲はCanada（Williamと同じ）のピアニストGlenn Gouldの演奏でも有名。そのためGouldへのオマージュでもあるのでしょう。そして最後の曲は’Julia’。誰がBeatlesのこの曲をここまで美しくカバーできるだろうか？ と思えるほどの質の高さです。ぜひ彼の作品を楽しんでください。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
Any kind of feeling. I think we are all desperate to feel something.

For that , how did you try to make these songs?
A
Someone asked me to play their birthday party in Paris and I didn’t have enough music so I wrote new songs.
I recorded this album in Tokyo, Japan – onto a 2 inch tape machine, with Nuemann microphones and a Japanese concert grand piano in June. A 7 inch vinyl record released together with a small book of writing.This books is 9 pages of writing about Bach, jail, cars and a tomato.

それを実現するために、どのように制作されましたか？
A
パリで誰かの誕生日パーティで演奏してもらえないかと頼まれたことがあって。そのとき、僕はまだ曲を十分には用意してなくて。それで新しい歌を書くことにした。
録音は6月に日本の東京で行った。Nuemannのマイクと日本のコンサートグランドピアノで演奏して、2インチテープマシンにレコーディングした。執筆した小さな本と一緒に、7インチのビニールレコードをリリースしたんだ。本の内容はバッハ、刑務所、車、トマトについて書いた9ページのものだよ。
