♪PROFILE♪

Miriam is a Germany photographer based between Berlin and LA. She grew up by Berlin with lots of nature pets and a big family. She started taking photos when she was about 12 years old. Documenting her surrounding, plants in the garden and her family’s animals. Later on as a teenager she started dressing her twin sister and doing little photo shootings with different outfits. After she dropped out of school (she couldn’t stand it anymore), she worked all kinds of retail jobs and organizing photo shoots with her friends or models she find online. Later, she began to get some work as a photographer. After a couple of years of ‘learning by doing’ taking photos she got more and more professionals projects. By 21 years old she quit her job working in a museums souvenir shop at that time and started / tried worked as a photographer only. That was now 5 years ago.

Miriamは、ベルリンとロサンゼルスを拠点に活動するドイツ人のフォトグラファー。ベルリンの近郊で、たくさんの自然の中、ペットと大家族に囲まれて育った。彼女が写真を撮り始めたのは、12歳の頃である。周りの環境や庭の植物、家族で飼っている動物などを記録していた。その後、ティーンエイジャーの頃には、双子の妹に様々な衣装を着せて、ちょっとした写真撮影をするようになった。学校に我慢ができなくなり退学した後は、あらゆる種類の小売店で働き、友人やインターネットで見つけたモデルと一緒に写真撮影を行っていた。その後、彼女はフォトグラファーとしての仕事をいくつか得るようになった。写真を撮ることを ‘自分で学ぶ’ことを数年続けた後、プロとしての仕事が増えていった。彼女が21歳の時、当時働いていた美術館のお土産屋さんを辞め、フォトグラファーの仕事に専念することになった。今から5年前のことである。

♪INTRODUCTION♪

Germany photographer, Miriam and I met in Tokyo in December of 2019. She is Emerson Snowe’s girlfriend and was at the Koenji show where he performed. The reason Emerson was in Japan in the first place was because of Miriam’s photography works. She seemed like a very cool, shy woman, in contrast to Emerson who was from Australia and was cheerful and sociable. They live together in Berlin.

She had created her own world in her photographs. She shoots her photos on film and tries to take on eccentric challenges. Motifs reminiscent of gothic and fairy tales, vintage dresses, and bright color combinations. When I look at the photos with such a mixture of elements, I feel as if I have somehow wandered into a wonderland. It’s a world that everyone could have visited when they were a child. 

She is almost self-taught in photography and now shoots advertisements for Gucci Beauty, but behind the scenes, she puts in a lot of effort. It is a gamble to try a challenging method of shooting with film, where you can’t immediately check the photos you have taken. And in the case of work, she have to win bets. The pressure of filming must be heavy. For winning she has to keep coming up with many ideas, and she has to shoot a lot of pictures. It’s a tough job. I think Emerson is attracted to her attitude as well. 

Fashion advertisements and editorials, portraits of musicians, and her private creative works are all fascinating. Among them, her photographs of Emerson leave me speechless. When I look at Emerson in the photo, I realize that he is not only a musician, but also a sensitive young man. Miriam is a person who doesn’t say much, but you can feel her deep love for him through her photographs. 

The reason it tugs at our heartstrings is because we feel that it is irreplaceable and important to us as well. The preciousness of loving and being loved. It is also a practical way to counter the dark shadows of violence that threaten individual freedom and equality. Communication with others begins with caring for them.

ドイツ人のフォトグラファーのMiriamと私は2019年の12月に東京で出会った。彼女はEmerson Snoweのガールフレンドで、彼が出演した高円寺のライヴ会場に来ていた。そもそも、Emersonが日本に来ていたのも、Miriamの撮影の仕事がきっかけだったようだ。オーストラリア出身で、明るく社交的なEmersonとは対照的に、彼女はとてもクールで、シャイな女性に見えた。2人はベルリンでともに暮らしているそうだ。

彼女は写真の中で、独自の世界を作り上げていた。フィルムで写真を撮影し、奇抜なチャレンジを試みている。ゴシックや童話を思わせるモチーフ、ヴィンテージのドレス、鮮やかな色の組み合わせ。そういったいろんな要素が混ざった写真を眺めていると、いつの間にか不思議の国に迷い込んだ気分になる。かつて子供の頃に、誰しもが訪れることができた世界へと。 

ほとんど独学で写真を学び、今やGucci Beautyの広告を撮影するまでに至った彼女だが、その裏ではかなり努力をしているようだ。そもそも撮影した写真を即座に確認できないフィルムで、チャレンジな撮影方法にトライすること自体が賭けである。しかも、仕事の場合は必ずその賭けに勝たなくてはならない。撮影のプレッシャーは大きいだろう。多くのアイディアを生み出し続ける必要があるし、多くの枚数の写真を撮影する必要がある。タフな仕事だ。そんな彼女の姿勢にも、Emersonは惹きつけられているのだろう。 

ファッションの広告やエディトリアル、ミュージシャンのポートレート、プライベートの創作作品。彼女が撮影した写真はどれも魅力的だ。その中でもやはり、彼女が撮影したEmersonの写真を眺めていると、言葉を失ってしまう。写真に映し出されたEmersonを見ると、彼もまたミュージシャンである前に、一人の繊細な青年であることに気づかされる。そしてまた、彼を捉えるMiriamの視線にも。Miriamは多くを語らない人ではあるが、彼女の深い愛情が写真を通して感じられる。 

それが我々の琴線に触れるのは、我々にとってもかけがえのない大切なことであると感じられるからであろう。人を愛することと、愛されることの尊さを。そしてそれこそが、個人の自由と平等を脅かす、暴力の暗い影に対抗しうる、現実的な手段でもある。人とのコミュニケーションは、相手を思いやることから始まるのだ。

♪INTERVIEW WITH  MIRIAM MARLENE♪

Q
What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to viewers through your photographs?
A
Hmm. I never try to communicate something specific. I guess just taking my work not too seriously. I like Irony, childish freedom, experimenting with fashion and colours.

How do you try to take photographs?
A
Playing with odds. Combining punk with romantic vintage fashion or using obviously ugly probs like garden gnomes etc.

What camera do you use and why?
A
I use simple film cameras. Too much technical options overwhelm me. I love the grain and the colours of film. The whole process is also special, dropping off the film at the photo lab. Waiting for the film to develop etc. excites me so much.
Q
What are the themes you are exploring through taking photographs?
A
People who I find inspiring, fashion I love, music, my ‘life’ and what I’m currently obsessed with. Garden gnomes for example. A bit like a diary.

Who inspires you and Why?
A
I couldn’t name a person per se. It’s more the desire to photograph in general. Any person who I meet, movies I watch, childhood memories, fashion, music etc.

写真を通して見る人達に伝えたいことは何ですか？
A
うーん。具体的に何かを伝えようとしたことはなくって。ただ、自分の仕事をあまり真剣に考えていないだけだと思うけれど。アイロニー（皮肉／風刺）、子供のような自由さ、ファッションや色の実験が好きなの。

どのように写真を撮ろうとしていますか？
A
確率との勝負。パンクとロマンチックなヴィンテージファッションを組み合わせたり、ガーデンノーム（ドイツの庭で見かける小人の人形）などの明らかに醜い飾り物を使ったりと。

使用しているカメラとその理由を教えてください。
A
シンプルなフィルムカメラを使っている。技術的なオプションが多すぎるものには、圧倒されてしまうので。フィルムの粒子と色が大好き。フィルムを写真館に持ち込んで、現像されるのを待っている間などはワクワクするものね。

写真を撮ることで探求しているテーマは何ですか？
A
インスピレーションを感じる人、好きなファッション、音楽、私の ‘人生’、そして今夢中になっていること。例えば、庭のノーム。日記のようなもね。

インスピレーションを受ける人とその理由は？
A
人の名前を具体的に挙げることはできないわ。それよりも、写真を撮りたいという欲求全般ね。出会った人、見た映画、子供の頃の思い出、ファッション、音楽などなど。
