David Bowie has always made it look easy. He was such a natural – effortless cool, even when he was challenging our ideas of who he was. And the songs! Nobody else has that theatricality, that power…that voice.

My favorite song of his is ‘Space Oddity’ – I love his sense of storytelling. I can’t think of anybody else who could break my heart the way the end of the song does. He was completely fearless in his work – even as his contemporaries covered familiar territory, he always kept us guessing what he’d write next.

He took me by surprise when I was very little. I had seen him in the Labyrinth. I always found him shocking. Later on I started listening to his music and fell in love with it. He liked to push buttons with his craft and he wasn’t afraid to explore. The Starman knew how to deliver a story.

I really don’t know how to answer that but, I can say that my personal favorite album is ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust’ and ‘The Spiders from Mars’, but I really liked most of his work. It was all a work of art and it’s appreciated in different ways. You really do have to give it
up to him, that was one hell of a parting gift he gave us as a goodbye. He is art and he will be forever remembered for it.

How didn’t he inspire me or any musician in the past 20-30-40 years. Bowie redefined popular music, constantly pushing the boundaries musically and reinventing the way you perceive music by image and fashion. He’s a maverick, a legend, a true hero. There is not many people who can make 20+ studio albums in their career, have over 100 singles and sell 140 million albums. A true legend.

I can’t pick a favorite. Every song has its own character, own artistic feel just full of melody. The first time I heard ‘Ground Control To Major Tom’ was when i was very young, it really got to me. I was fascinated with space and that song really painted a beautiful image in my head. Now that he’s gone I see that song as a farewell. He’s leaving the capsule, stepping through the door, floating in the most peculiar way…. and the stars look very different today. RIP

Aw it’s such a tragedy! I am still in shock about the whole thing. David Bowie has inspired me to be a fearless performer. He pushed so many boundaries and is iconic for his bold choices he made as an artist. My favorite song is ‘Fame’ because it reminds me of dancing with my mom in my pajamas when I was a kid.

I grew up listening to ‘Aladdin Sane’, and ‘Ziggy Stardust’. His eccentricities always drew me toward him and in turn it changed the way I write as a whole.His music has had such a huge influence on my life.I doubt my music would be the same without David Bowie. One of my personal favorite songs is on the back end of ‘Ziggy Stardust’. ‘John, I’m Only Dancing’ is an incredibly memorable song to me. The shift between a very bluesy opening riff to a darker, more jazz influenced chorus with bass that thumps quarter notes into the back of your skull.

His music, art, modeling, fashion, the way he lived, talked and delivered messages, his movies, his videos. He inspires all of us to live in a way that inspires others. Bowie was many things to many people. For me, more than anything, I was inspired by his message that you should be who you want to be, and that it’s okay (and actually really great) to be different. It wasn’t just a message either. It was something that Bowie really lived. He reinvented himself many times but always in strange and wonderful forms. He never apologised for being unusual or different. I grew up often feeling different, uncool, and like an outsider. So these were important ideas for me.

It was difficult to choose just one, but I decided on ‘Ashes to Ashes’. The lyrics tell a strange story and paint a picture of a somewhat pained character. They’re often understood as being somewhat autobiographical about his life in the 70s, which including some interesting and difficult times. Bowie described it to NME back in 1980 as follows: “It really is an ode to childhood, if you like, a popular nursery rhyme. It’s about space men becoming junkies (laughs).” Of course, we know Bowie really was a space man and he was certainly a bit of a junkie for a while there.
I can’t relate to any of this personally, but it’s still fascinating and the music itself is great.The synths, bass and layered vocals combine to something a little otherworldly in some parts. And the end of the chorus, with the words “hitting an all-time low”, always really gets me.
