♪PROFILE♪

Bad Static are a 2 piece punk band from the UK, with Floyd Magee on lead guitar and vocals, and Jack Finch on Bass Guitar and also vocals. Floyd is from Gloucestershire in the South of England, and Jack is from Cleveland in the North of England. Floyd and Jack met online and decided to meet and make music, and have produced ‘Meat Machine'(ep) in 2020. Then they are going to play live in the south west of England soon.

Bad Staticはthe UKの2ピースのパンクバンドで、リードギターとヴォーカルにはFloyd Magee、ベースギターとヴォーカルにはJack Finchが参加している。Floydはイングランド南部のグロスターシャー出身で、Jackはイングランド北部のクリーブランド出身。FloydとJackはフロイドはオンラインで出会い、音楽を一緒に作ることを決め、2020年に’Meat Machine'(ep)をリリースした。

It was a boring lockdown.
(In Japan, people were only asked to refrain from going out by the government.)

So there were many reasons for we to make excuses. That is why we are giving up what we want to accomplish. Of course, we couldn’t go out. That’s a good reason. If you complain about that, no one will blame you.

However, there are people who think of the pinch as an opportunity. They are Bad Static. They are teenagers living in England, Floyd and Jack are 18 years old. They love surf rock from the 60s, British rock from the 70s and 80s and alternative rock from the 90s. Yes, They love rock as a counterculture just like we do.

There were many reasons for them to stop their music activities during the lockdown. First, there were only two members of the band, and they didn’t understand the music theory well. On top of that, the two were unable to meet.

But they were a little different from the others. Instead of making excuses, they kept trying. They sent each other’s performances by e-mail, picked up the words in the lyrics on the Internet, and imbued the song. Since there is no Drums performer, Floyd recorded using a keyboard that can reproduce that sound. Of course it is hard to record for them. When Jack sings at home, complaints come from the neighborhood, and they had a hard time shaping the song. Still, during the lockdown, the two created one ep at a distance.

Born from such an exemplary rock spirits, this work is dark with a bad taste. The ep covers have a scary atmosphere, the songs are full of noise, and the lyrics are hard to hear. But as we listen to their song, the music strangely fits into our ears. You can feel the birth of new rock by new generation under the superficial intensity sound.

それはうんざりするようなロックダウンだった。
日本では、人々は外出を自粛することを要請される程度だったけれども……。

だから、言い訳をする理由はいくらでもあった。つまり、君が成し遂げたいと思っていることを、君自身が放棄していることについての理由だ。それはそうだ。外出ができないのだから。それは正当な理由になる。君が不満を言っていても、それを責める人はいないだろう。

けれど、そのピンチを機会として捉え直す人達もいる。それが、Bad Staticの2人だ。彼らはthe UKに住むティーンネイジャーで、FloydとJackはともに18歳だ。彼らは、60年代のサーフロック、70-80年代のブリティッシュロック、90年代のオルタナティヴロックが大好きだ。そう私達と同じように、カウンターカルチャーとしてのロックを愛しているのである。

ロックダウンの中、彼らが音楽活動を止める理由はいくらでもあった。そもそもバンドのメンバーは二人しかいないし、彼らは音楽理論もよくわかっていなかった。それに加え、二人が会うこともできなかったのだから。

しかし、彼らは他の人達とはちょっと違った。言い訳をする代わりに、挑戦し続けた。彼らは、メールでお互いの演奏を送り合い、ネットで歌詞の単語を拾い集め、歌を吹き込んでいった。ドラマーがいないので、Floydはその音を再現できるキーボードを使ってレコーディングをした。もちろんレコーディングは、なかなかうまくいかなかった。Jackが家で歌えば近所からクレームが来るし、彼らが曲を形にすることにも苦労した。それでも、２人はロックダウンの最中、距離を置きながらも１つのepを作り上げたのだ。

そんな模範的なロックスピリッツから生まれた本作は、どこまでも悪趣味でダークな仕上がり。epのカバーは怖い雰囲気だし、曲はノイズだらけだし、歌詞もよく聞き取れない。それでも我々が彼らの曲をしばらいく聴いていると、不思議なことに音楽が耳になじんでいく。我々は、表層的な激しさの下にある、新世代の美しいロックを感じとることができるのだ。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
Our songs on this ep are about nothing really, what we’re trying to explore is how far we can push meaningless themes into our music before people lose interest. But if people find them interesting, that’s good.

Why did you choose Bad Static your band name?
A
Jack, Our bassist’s amplifier would make a terrible buzzing sound when he turned the volume up.
The name is also the opposite of the name ‘Good Vibrations’, a song by The Beach Boys which we both hate.

Who inspire you?
A
We both love Punk from the 70s and 80s, the Buzzcocks and things like that from the UK, but also love 60s surf rock from the USA; Dick Dale’s guitar tone has influenced our sound a lot, and the short structure of the songs too. We both love 90s alternative rock, Weezer, The Pixies, with the strong riffs, and we wanted to combine some strong riffs like these with the short and punchy style of the 60s surf scene, whilst also keeping it punk.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this ep?
A
That anyone can make music if they try hard enough, you don’t have to be good to do what you love. We are both terrible musicians really, and if you enjoy this ep, you have a terrible taste in music.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
The whole ep was recorded in the Corona Lockdown, with Jack emailing his basslines to me, and recording the lyrics under his duvet to get a cleaner sound. One time, while Jack was singing ‘6 Litres Of Spit’, the police got sent to his house for a noise complaint, asking why he was “shouting about spit”.
The songs usually start with Jack’s basslines, and I add more and more layers of guitar, with me and Jack working together on the lyrics.
Neither of us tune our guitars or know anything about music theory so the song writing process is often really annoying, but that’s what makes it funnier.
I have an old Yamaha keyboard from 2001. It has a setting where each key on the keyboard plays a different drum, so one key will play a snare, another key will play a crash cymbal, and so on. All the drums were done this way. It is like playing a tiny drum-kit.
When it comes to lyrics, we usually just use online rhyme websites and choose the one with the most syllables.
The album artwork was an accident: I really liked this picture of Jack jumping in the air with his bass, but he refused to let me use it because he didn’t like his face in the photo, so I just used a random picture of a pig I had on my laptop and covered his face with that.

そのためにどのように曲を作ろうとしたのですか？
A
コロナウイルスを抑えるためのロックダウンの最中、epの全てをレコーディングしたんだ。Jackがベースラインをメールで送ってくれた。それから彼は、よりクリーンなサウンドにするために、掛け布団の下で歌詞を録音したりもした。ある時、Jackが’6 Litres Of Spit’を家で歌っていた時には、警察が彼の家に騒音苦情を届けでに来たりもしたんだよ、”唾について叫んでいる理由は何なのか”ってね。曲は通常、Jackのベースラインから始まって、僕はギターのレイヤーをどんどん追加していき、二人で一緒に歌詞を書いてった。
二人ともギターをチューニングはしないし、音楽理論について何もわかっていないので、曲の制作プロセスはけっこうややこしかったけれども、それが楽曲を面白くしたかなとも思う。
僕は2001年の古いヤマハのキーボードを持っていて。キーボードの各キーが異なるドラムを演奏するように設定されているんだ。1つのキーがスネアを、別のキーがクラッシュシンバルを演奏するといった感じでね。ドラムはすべてこの方法でレコーディングした。小さなドラムキットを演奏するようなものだね。
歌詞に関しては、僕らはオンラインの韻のウェブサイトを使って、音節が最も多いものを選ぶことが多いね。アルバムのアートワークは偶然だったんだ。Jackがベースと一緒に空中を飛び跳ねている、この写真がすごい好きだったんだ。だけど、彼がその写真の顔が気に入らなくてが、それを使用することを拒否され。で、僕はラップトップ上に持っていたブタで彼の顔を覆ったってわけさ。
