Robbie Wood is a musician from the suburbs of London, who is also the guitarist of the popular UK band, Swim Deep. He has been doing a solo project under the name Cardinal Fang, but with the release of his new album, he has changed the name to Robert Tawny. In July 2021, he released ‘Tawny Structures’.

A masterpiece album representing the year 2021 was quietly released in July. The name of the album is ‘Tawny Structures’. The album was produced by Robbie Wood, the guitarist of the UK’s popular band Swim Deep. He saw the lockdown period as an opportunity and spent about eight months working on this solo album. He played all the instruments except for the drum parts, wrote the lyrics, and sang the songs, with Tom from Swim Deep on the drum parts. He even mixed the album himself.

The album was produced by Robbie Wood, the guitarist of the UK’s popular band Swim Deep. He saw the lockdown period as an opportunity and spent about eight months working on this solo album. He played all the instruments except for the drum parts, wrote the lyrics, and sang the songs, with Tom from Swim Deep on the drum parts. He even mixed the album himself.
To coincide with the release of his new album, he has also changed the name of his solo project from Cardinal Fang to Robert Tawny. To give it a more personal meaning, he chose a name inspired by his favorite owl. In other words, this work is a literal crystallization of his soul, in which he has poured more of his own talent, time, and effort than ever before.
What he wanted was a truly great album. So what does a good album mean to him? If you look at Instagram, you may see him buying records on the account of a record store in London. He is a true music fan, and I guess he loves good old music and the album format. That is his standard for good works. Therefore, it would be appropriate to listen to the first half of the eight songs on this album as the A-side and the second half as the B-side.
The first song, ‘Saturday Stream’, draws you in with its up-tempo melody and Robbie’s unique sense of rhythm. The fourth track, ‘All Aboard’ is a pleasant chaos. The final ballad, ‘We Could Be There’, is a real gem. In this song, we can feel his tenderness and love for music. And after listening to the whole album, you realize that no matter how weak and dim the power of one person may seem, it is the thoughts of an individual that truly touches our hearts.
Robbie seems to have done very little to promote this album other than announcing it on his own social network. So, I guess there are still many people who don’t know about this album. But I can assure you. If you are a fan of rock music, you will love this album.

また、新作のリリースに合わせて、彼はソロプロジェクトの名称をCardinal FangからRobert Tawnyへと変更している。よりパーソナルな意味合いを持たせるために、彼が愛好するフクロウからインスパイアされた名前を選んだという。つまり、本作はこれまで以上に、彼自身の才能と時間、労力を注ぎ込んだ、文字通り魂の結晶なのである。
彼が志向したのは、本当に優れたアルバムである。では彼にとっての優れたアルバムとは何であろうか？ Instagramを見ていると、ロンドンのレコード店のアカウントで、彼がレコードを買っている姿を目にすることがある。彼は真の音楽ファンであり、古き良き音楽、またアルバムというフォーマットを愛しているのだろう。それこそが彼にとっての良作の基準である。だから、本作に収められた8曲も、前半をA面、後半をB面として聴くのがふさわしい。
まず、一曲目の‘Saturday Stream’を聴けば、アップテンポのメロディ、Robbieらしい独特なリズム感に引き込まれる。四曲目では、‘All Aboard’の心地良いカオスが待っている。そして秀逸なのが、最後に収録されたバラード曲 ‘We Could Be There’だ。この曲の中で我々は、彼の優しさと音楽に対する愛を感じることができる。そしてアルバムを通して聴き終えた後、気づくのだ。1人の力がどんなに弱く、おぼろげに見えようとも、我々の心に本当に響くのは、個人の想いなのだと。
Robbieは本作のプロモーションを、彼自身のSNSを使った告知の他には、ほとんどしていないようだ。だから、このアルバムを知らない方もまだ多いのではないかと思う。けれど断言してもいい。ロックを愛するあなたなら、このアルバムをきっと気に入ってくれるだろう。

Q
What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through the new album?
A
A lot of it is about confusion so hopefully it sounds more direct.
The sounds are important to me and I tried to make every sound interesting.
Q
How did you try to make songs?
A
This album took around 8 months to complete which is the longest I’ve ever spent on a project! I really tried to take my time with it and I mixed it all myself which was quite exhausting. I work backwards so I make the instrumental usually first, and then add drums and vocals last, like a puzzle. The lyrics and themes are a mixture of personal (We Could Be There, By Slow Degrees), commentary about the U.K. (Tarmac Tommy, Paul’s Walk, Saturday Stream) and one song about a nightmare I had (Afternoon, Sailors).
I use a lot of different tunings for this album, so I am playing a lot of open chords and non chord patterns, which makes it sound Jangly and Folk.
All instruments by me, except the drums, by Tom from Swim Deep. It has been the same in Cardinal Fang.
The artwork is by my friend Jack Smith, I have collaborated with him a few times. The idea was to reference a new swimming pool in London that is across two luxury flats, a lot of the themes are about the loss of London’s soul, which is being ripped out day by day. Jack is an amazing illustrator!

Would you tell us why you changed the name of your solo project?
A
I wanted to make a personal album and I had gotten bored of ‘Cardinal Fang’ which was a bit of a joke first as it is from a Monty Python episode. The ‘Tawny’ just came to me in an image with the cover and I love Owls! I don’t know what ‘Tawny Structures’ means but it sounds exotic.

Would you tell us about some of the artists and works that influenced this album?
A
Before I make an album I read and watch a lot of films to get inspired! ‘Radio On’ by Christopher Petit and ‘London’ by Patrick Keiller were films I loved whilst making.
I get inspired by books a lot, and there a few like ‘A Dead Man in Deptford’ by Anthony Burgess and ‘Kingdom Come’ by JG Ballard, ‘V’ by Thomas Pynchon…the big hitters, which are strong influences on the album. And I just finished a history course on Tudor London so that was inspiring.
Then I borrowed heavily from from the book of Julian Cope for this project!

今回のアルバムは、完成までに約8ヶ月を要し、これまでのプロジェクトの中で最も長い期間を費やした。たっぷりと時間をかけようと思っていたし、すべて自分でミックスしたので、かなり疲れもしたよ。僕は逆算して制作するので、通常は演奏だけを最初に録り、ドラムとボーカルを最後に加えるという、パズルのような作業をしている。歌詞やテーマは、個人的なもの（We Could Be There, By Slow Degrees）、the UKについてのコメント（Tarmac Tommy, Paul’s Walk, Saturday Stream）、そして僕が見た悪夢についての歌（Afternoon, Sailors）が混ざっている。
このアルバムでは様々なチューニングを使っているので、オープンコードやノンコードパターンをたくさん演奏していて、それが不協和かつフォークなサウンドにもなっている。
Swim DeepのTomによるドラム以外の楽器は、僕の演奏によるものだ。Cardinal Fangの頃と一緒だね。
アートワークは友人のJack Smithによるもの。彼とは何度かコラボレーションしたことがある。アイディアは、ロンドンの2つの高級マンションにまたがる新しいスイミングプールを参考にしたもので、多くのテーマは、日々切り取られていくロンドンの魂の喪失について。Jackは素晴らしいイラストレーターだよ。

ソロプロジェクトの名前を変えた理由を教えてください。
A
個人的なアルバムを作りたかったし、‘Cardinal Fang’にも飽きていた。‘Cardinal Fang’はモンティ・パイソン（the UKのコメディ）のエピソードから取ったもので、最初はちょっとしたジョークだったんだ。‘Tawny’ は、アルバムのジャケットのイメージで思いついたもの。僕はフクロウが大好きなんだ。‘Tawny Structures’が何を意味するのかは分からないけれど、エキゾチックな響きだよね。

今回のアルバムに影響を与えたアーティストや作品について教えてください。
A
アルバムを作る前には、たくさんの映画を見たりして、インスピレーションを得ている。Christopher Petitの‘Radio On’ やPatrick Keillerの‘London’ は、制作中にハマっていた映画だ。
本からも多くのインスピレーションを受けている。Anthony Burgess の‘A Dead Man in Deptford’、 JG Ballardの‘Kingdom Come’、 Thomas Pynchonの‘V’ など、アルバムに強い影響を与えている大作がある。また、ちょうどチューダー朝のロンドンについての歴史コースを終えたところなので、それも刺激になった。
それから今回のプロジェクトでは、Julian Copeの本もとても参考になったよ！
