‘NIGHTHAWKS ON CRIMSON STEPS’

ROBERT TAWNY

Robbie Wood is a musician from the suburbs of London, who is also the guitarist of the popular the U.K. band, Swim Deep. Previously he has been a solo project under the name Cardinal Fang, which he changed to Robert Tawny in July 2021. He released ‘Tawny Structures’(album) at the same time, and released ‘Nighthawks on Crimson Steps’(album) in February 2023.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through new works?
A
To communicate is the ideal! Any ash filled memory or spark. I write the lyrics last so sometimes the message can be obscure, a lot of these songs the message became clear quickly; influencers, broken hearts, damaged cities, an unbearable heatwave.

How did you make the works?
A
I changed the album name to ‘Nighthawks on Crimson Steps’ after experimenting with AI, around the idea of an old New Yorker style magazine, or a 50s Jazz album cover. It is based off of Edward Hopper’s famous painting ‘Nighthawks’, and it sparked an idea of what happened to the characters in that painting, a kind of endless night in a city.

The themes of the album are still very much what it is like to live in a city, to try and find meaning somewhere that is deliberately obfuscating.
I recorded everything this time, the drums were all recorded separate as I am not too good on a kit. I wanted to use a lot more piano and acoustic, and I had around 30 songs accumulated until I was happy with a track list.
The lyrics of ‘Fetterville’ are the best/most direct on the album.

新作を通じて、リスナーに一番伝えたいことは何ですか？
A
伝えることが理想！？ 灰に埋もれた記憶や火花でもいい。僕は歌詞を最後に書くから、時にはメッセージが曖昧になることもあるけれど、この作品の多くの曲はメッセージがすぐに明らかになった：インフルエンサー、失恋、傷ついた街、耐え難い熱波。

作品はどのように作られたのでしょうか？
A
アルバム名は、古いニューヨーカースタイルの雑誌や50年代のジャズアルバムのジャケットをイメージして、AIで実験した結果、‘Nighthawks on Crimson Steps’に変更したんだ。これはエドワード・ホッパーの有名な絵画 ‘Nighthawks’をモチーフにしていて、その絵画の登場人物に何が起こったのか、ある種の都市の果てしない夜というアイデアを閃いたんだ。

アルバムのテーマは、やはり都市に住むということがどういうことなのか、意図的に難解なところに意味を見出そうとすることなんだ。
今回はすべて自分でレコーディングしたよ。ドラムはあまり得意ではないので、すべて別録り。ピアノやアコースティックをもっとたくさん使いたかったし、トラックリストが決まるまで30曲くらい溜め込んでいたよ。
‘Fetterville’の歌詞は、このアルバムの中で一番、直接的なものだと思う。
