Psycoheads is a four-member band based in Tokyo. All members are in their teens. Hitoshi Violet gathered members after entering his university and started their band activities. At the end of 2019, they played as a support act for the Brion Starr live in Japan. In April 2020,they released their debut single ‘Bad Tuning’. They plan to release an ep in near the future.

Psycoheadsは、メンバー全員が10代、東京を拠点に活動する４人組のバンド。Hitoshi Violetが大学に入学後メンバーを集め、活動がスタート。2019年末にはBrion Starr来日ライヴのサポートアクトを務めた。2020年4月にはデビューシングル”Bad Tuning”をリリース。今後、epのリリースを予定している。

In September 2019, Piet who is owner of Swiss record label Taxi Gauche Records, contacted me. He loves Hedi and rock music and seemed to be interested in my blog. So he introduced me to solo musician Brion Starr in New York, who belongs to his label. At that time, Brion was planning for a new release and a performance in Japan.

I went to the first day of Brion Starr’s tour on November 26th. The venue is the live house ‘Cross’ in front of Chofu station in the suburbs of Tokyo. Although Chofu is a large city, it is a city where most ordinary people live. In the neighboring Setagaya Ward, there are areas such as Shimokitazawa where young people who aspire to music gather. There are often performances by overseas artists. But Chofu is a really ordinary city. Moreover, it is a weekday. In short to say, the live venue was not crowded.

But it was a very good event. It was good to go. In addition to Brion, Jaie Gon (Bass) and Pete Sustarsic (Drums) of ex-Public Acces TV participated in the venue as Brion’s support members. First of all, I was glad that I met them. Then it is worth writing that the core fans gathered during Brion’s appearance time and they got excited.

There were somel Japanese bands as a support act at this event. Among them, there was a four-piece band that stands out. They were Psychoheads. They were still teenagers, with fashion like the 80s and 90s and a skinny figure, just walking around the venue was impressive. When their live started, I was surprised. Hitoshi Violet(Vocal) reminded me of Joy Divison’s Ian, The style of Takuro (Drums) standing and playing reminded me of Bobby in the era of Jesus And Mary Chain. Toma (Bass) play rhythm coolly while sitting on t his amp, and ylow (guitar) ran freely around the venue with his blond hair flying.

I could understand immediately what they do by reinterpreting the 80’s British band, playing intentionally eliminating the so-called Japanese band sound. I guess Jai who was next to me feel like that. His eyes had changed when they were playing. Of course, the Japanese band that appeared in the latter half of Psycoheads was much better at playing, and the live itself was more exciting. Even so, people who understand can understand. Their sound can be listened to music as an extension of alternative/indie rock of overseas. Moreover, it’s not an overseas copy, it’s just an original, and there are few Japanese bands that can play such kind of music.

And the long-awaited first sound source was released as a single. Unlike the impression at the live, I was surprised at the tempo of the single ‘Bad Tuning’. The songs I listened to live had a more relaxed image with more emphasis on rhythm. But there was a reason for this. Hitoshi, who is also the leader of the band, first liked punk before the post-punk of the 1980s. Specifically, He was a fan of The Libertines. To put it simply, the image of this song that Jesus And Mary Chain’s sound with the speed of The Libetines and the catchiness of a Japanese band. Yes, it’s a great work!

2019年9月、私はスイスのレコードレーベル、Taxi Gauche RecordsのオーナーPietから連絡を頂いた。Hediと音楽を愛する彼は、私のブログに興味を持ってくれたようだった。そこで彼のレーベルに所属する、ニューヨークのソロミュージシャンBrion Starrのことを私に紹介してくれた。当時、Brionは新作のリリースと、来日公演を控えていた。

早速11月26日、Brionのツアーの初日に行った。開催場所は東京郊外の都市である調布の駅前にあるライヴハウス’Cross’。調布は街としては大きいものの、ごく一般的な人々が住む都市だ。隣接する世田谷区には下北沢など、音楽を志す若い人たちが集まる地域がある。そこには海外のアーティストの公演もよくある。しかし調布は本当に普通の街だ。しかも開催日は平日だった。つまり、ライヴ会場が空いていたということである。

しかしながら、とても良いイベントだった。行って良かった。会場にはBrionはもちろん、彼のサポートメンバーとして、元Public Acces T.V.のJaie Gon(Bass)とPete Sustarsic(Drums)が参加していた。まず彼らに会えたこと自体が嬉しかった。Brionの出演時間にはコアなファンが集まり、盛り上がったことは特筆すべきことだ。

このイベントにはサポートアクトとして、何組かの日本人のバンドがいた。その中でもひときわ目立つ４人組のバンドがいた。彼らこそがPsychoheadsである。彼らはまだ10代のようで、80年代と90年代がミックスされたようなファッション、スキニーな体形で、彼らが会場を歩き回る姿だけでも印象的だった。いざ彼らのライヴが始まると、驚いてしまった。ヴォーカルのHitoshi Violetが歌う姿はJoy DivisonのIanを思わせたし、ドラムスのTakuroが立って演奏するスタイルは、Jesus And Mary Chain時代のBobbyを想起させた。ベースのTomaはアンプに座りながら寡黙にリズムを刻み、ギターのylowはブロンドヘアをなびかせながら自由自在に駆け回っていた。

すぐに理解できた。彼らは80年代の英国のバンドを再解釈してやっており、いわゆる日本人のバンドサウンドを意図的に排しながらプレイしていることだ。それは横で見ていたJaiも一緒のようでした。もちろんPsycoheadsより終盤に出てくる日本人のバンドの方が演奏はよっぽど上手だったし、ライヴ自体ももっと盛り上がっていた。それでも、わかる人にはわかるのだ。Psychoheadsは海外のオルタナティヴ／インディロックの延長で音楽を聴くことができるバンドだと。しかも、海外のコピーではなく、あくまでオリジナルであり、そういった種類の音楽を鳴らせる日本人のバンドはほとんどいないことを。

そして待ちに待った初の音源がシングルとしてリリースされた。ライヴでの印象とは異なり、シングル’Bad Tuning’のテンポの速さに驚いた。ライヴで聴いた曲達はもう少しリズム重視でゆったりとしたイメージがあったから。ただ、これには理由があった。バンドのリーダーでもあるHitoshiは80年代のポストパンクより先に、まずパンクが好きだったのだ。具体的にいうとThe Libertinesのファンだった。わかりやすくいうと、Jesus And Mary Chainのサウンドを、The Libetinesの速さで、さらに日本のバンドらしい独特のキャッチーさをプラスしてオリジナルのサウンドに仕上がっているイメージ。そう、素晴らしい作品なのだ！

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
I don’t want to be just a homage influenced by the 80’s bands.

Why did you choose Psychoheads your band name?
A
When we tried to decide on a band name, the members shared cool words. We stitched those words together and chose the one that fits best. At first, we were working under the name Psycho Heads. However, we thought it would be cooler to use one word and became Psychoheads.

Who inspires you?
A
I yearn for Carl Barat from The Libertines.

About ‘Bad Tuning‘ (single)

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
It’s difficult because it’s not a song I made to convey something to the listener. However, I think it will be fun if more Japanese people listen to cool rock music.
Q
How did you try to make songs for that?
A
When we were listening to the original song of ‘Bad Tuning’ with Speed who hold an event and shoot video, we talked that ” it’s too long”. So we made this song short so that it wouldn’t get bored. Cover art is used photos of athletic meet in high school by ylow (guitar) lol. We want to show Japaneseness as our coolness. I think this is a funny jacket that takes advantage of that sense.

A
80年代のバンドに影響を受けた、ただのオマージュにはしたくないと思っています。

ユニット名をPsychoheadsに選んだのはなぜですか？
A
バンド名を決めようってなった時に、かっこいい単語をメンバーで出し合ってくっつけて1番しっくりくるものを選んだ感じです。最初はPsycho Headsで活動していて、でも単語をつなげた方がカッコよくねってなってなって、Psychoheadsになりました。

A
The LibertinesだったらCarl Baratに憧れています。

About ‘Bad Tuning’ (single)

この作品を通じて通じてリスナーに伝えたい最も重要なことは何ですか？
A
リスナーに何かを伝えたいと思って作った曲ではないので、難しいのですが、より多くの日本人がかっこいいロックを聴くようになれば楽しいなとは思います。

そのためにどのように曲を作りましたか？
A
Speedっていう一緒にイベントやビデオの撮影などをしてる人たちと’Bad Tuning’の原曲を聴いてたときに、”（当時のバージョンでは）長いな”という話がでて、曲を短くして、飽きがこない長さにしました。
カバーアートはylow(guitar) の高校時代の運動会の写真を使っています(笑)。日本人らしさも僕たちのカッコ良さとして出していきたいので、そのへんを生かせた面白いジャケットにできたなと思っています。

When I saw the Psychoheads live and thought that the guitar kid’s blond hair was cool, the hair stylist Haruka Hatakeyama worked on it. He is one of Tokyo’s leading hair stylists, who I have previously introduced on this blog. This time, I received a special recommend to this band from him. Please take a look!

Haruka is from Tokyo. He has earned a high reputation not only in Japan but also abroad for transmitting culture through hairstyles.
A lot of attention is also being paid to hairstyle proposals by him, his own fashion, DJ and lifestyle shared on his Instagram.
In 2020 he transferred to the hair salon’Whyte ‘. I asked him for his candid feelings about this.
“What I like is the same. My work has the same taste as before. Also, when I look ahead, I need to learn from another angle and I would like to endeavor not to end as the transient movement.”

RECOMMEND
What I feel about Psychoheads is the early Joy Division-like post-punk feel of the song. Furthermore, I think it’s interesting that the 90s-like alternative rock feel is well mixed in both music and fashion. Even in the past post-punk, I feel that they are expressing the “now and the future of Tokyo” instead of the 90s reprint of the alterna. I cut hairs of ylow(Guitar) and Takuro Kaneko(Drums) . I cut them while imagine that enhances their world view and characters stand.

RECOMMEND
僕がPsychoheadsについて感じることは、曲については初期のJoy Division的な荒削りなポストパンク感。さらに、音楽とファッションの両面に、90sっぽいオルタナティヴロックの感じをうまくMixしていることがおもしろいと思います。過去のポストパンクでも90sのオルタナの焼き増しではなく、”今の、そしてこれからのTokyo”を彼らなりに表現している気がします。僕はylow(Guitar)、Takuro Kaneko(Drums)のヘアを手掛けています。彼らの世界観を引き立てる様なキャラが立つ様にイメージしながらカットしていますよ。
