Lewis from Denmark and Chris from Ireland, who grew up together in Belgium, met in Paris again two years ago and they restarted their collaboration. Joined by Julia from Finland and They formed Oracle Sisters. The debut single ‘Always’, which was released in 2018, attracted much attention not only because of the music but also as a movie-like music video on the theme of a fictional journey. This year, they were selected as one of The NME 100: Essential new artists for 2019. Hedi Slimane also participated in their live performances and took pictures of them. And on August 21, 2019, the long-awaited new single ‘Spotlight’ was just released with a music video.

Belgium（ベルギー）でともに育ったDenmark出身のLewisとIreland出身のChrisが、2年前にParisで再会をはたし共作をリスタート。そこにFinland出身のJuliaが加わり、Oracle Sistersを結成。2018年リリースしたデビューシングル’Always’は、楽曲のよさのみならず、架空の旅をテーマにしたまるで映画のようなミュージックビデオで話題を集めました。本年、彼らはUKの大手ロックメディアNMEが選ぶ新人100（The NME 100: Essential new artists for 2019）に選出され、今後UKでのプロモーションも本格化するそう。また、Hedi Slimaneも彼らのライブに参加し、彼らの撮影を敢行。そして、2019年8月21日には待望のニューシングル’Spotlight’がミュージックビデオとともに公開されたばかりです！

I would like to introduce the 3 piece band Oracle Sisters, which is based in Paris and has just released the third single ‘Spotlight’. Only 3 songs have been released yet, but all are great. If you haven’t listened to other songs, check out the 1st single ‘Always’ and the 2nd single ‘I’m you ‘. Also, at the end of this article, I introduce a collaboration T-shirt with them.This is pretty cool so you will like it.
Among the members, Lewis was from Denmark and Chris was from Ireland, but they grew up in Brussels, Belgium and have been playing together and writing songs since then. After that, both of them traveled to other countries, and they happened to meet again in Paris two years ago, which led to the start of music activities as a band. Chris says, ‘It’s a complicated story.’ Then Julia from Denmark joined. She has a career with Guitar / Vocal, but in this band she decides to participate as a Drums / Vocal part. Lewis and Chris also call her the ‘queen of elves’.
The essence of this band is the clash of the individuality of Chiris and Lewis. The two are very close, so we tend to think they are similar, but the characters are the opposite. That’s why they complement each other to create a sound like no other.
Chris is also a mathematician scholar. In mathematics, Patterns, Shapes and Exploration seem to be the main themes. He is also pursuing it in music, so he is doing something interesting. For example, the phrase “do re mi fa sol” in the 1st single “Always” song , the actual scale is “sol #, fa #, mi, do #”. Furthermore, the title of the 2nd single ‘I’m you’ also feels strange. In this way, he is good at a structured approach using human preconceptions.
On the other hand, Lewis is a painter. Many of his paintings are based on nature and are very poetic. He also works on single cover work, and the design of abstract paintings, which is rare in other bands, is wonderful. (You can also see his work on Instagram’s Lewis account.)
Chris who thinks things structurally, Lewis who makes use of sensibility, the combination of the two creates a unique personality. The music seems to be simple pop music, and if you listen carefully, you will notice that the composition of each part is very considered. This balance is comfortable for listeners.
In fact, since childhood (Belgium), Chris made chord progressions, and in response Lewis created melody lines. The accumulation is the source of trust. Lewis said that ”We write all the songs together normally more or less. It’s like Lennon , McCartney…even if we don’t write each other’s songs we he help finish them”.
Julia has joined such a perfect formation. With the addition of Julia’s beautiful singing voice and delicate percussion, Oracle Sisters is getting closer to the ideal.
Next, I will consider the position of Oracle Sisters in the music scene. Of course they are included in the currently active Parisian scene. In addition, it can be captured on another axis. It is a new movement that can be called nostalgic pop music. In overseas reviews, GrizzlyBear and Mac DeMarco are also compared, and there are some similarities, but the essence is different. Oracle Sisters are more organic and nostalgic. The sound is delicate and romantic. Their fashion seems to have slipped back in time since the 70s.
Speaking of rock nostalgia is the movement of rock and roll revival in the early 00s. There were two ways. And now, young artists who try them are worth noting.
The first is ‘Know the old and make a new sound’ like The Strokes. Now La Femme and Crack Cloud are doing it.
Second, like The White Stripes, ‘Reviving the sound of the good old days into the present time’. That new trend is also happening now. This technique takes advantage of the gap between the era of reference and the present era, and sometimes has a strong impact. That was also what Hedi did at CELINE WOMEN ’S AW 2019-20COLLECITON. In the current music scene, Dan Lyons’s glam rock from UK, William de Courcy’s piano and vocal song from Canada, and Oracle Sisters’s acoustic sound are the latter.
Oracle Sisters appreciates not only contemporary bands such as Papooz, but also many past artists (Julie London, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson, John Jacob Niles, Bessie Smith, Slim Harpo, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart). This preference also shows that they have a strong longing for the past.
Now, the new song ‘Spotlight’ that was released is the theme of Paris night. French duo Papooz also made an album on this subject. Please enjoy the dark and beautiful world view with the music video, which is different from the previous two songs.

Parisを拠点に活動し、3枚目のシングル’Spotlight’をリリースしたばかりの3ピースバンドOracle Sistersをご紹介します。まだ３曲しか出してませんが、どの曲も素晴らしいです。未聴の方は、1st singleの’Always’、2nd singleの’I’m you’も素晴らしいのでぜひチェックしてみてください。また、本記事の最後には彼らとのコラボTシャツをご紹介します。かなりかっこいいのでお楽しみに！
メンバーの内、LewisはDenmark出身、ChrisはIreland出身ながら、Brussels,Belgium（ベルギーのブリュッセル）で育ち、当時から一緒に遊んだり、曲を作ったりしていました。その後、お互い他国を回っていたところ、たまたま2年前にパリで再会し、それがきっかけでバンドとしての活動をスタートさせました。Chirisいわく’複雑な物語なんだよ’とのこと。そこにDenmark出身のJuliaが加入。彼女はGuitar/Vocalの経歴の持ち主ですが、このバンドではDrums/Vocalパートとして参加することに。LewisとChrisは彼女を’エルフの女王’だなんて呼んだりもするそうです。
このバンドの真髄はなんといっても、やはりChirisとLewisの個性のぶつかり合いかなと。2人はすごく仲がよさそうなので一緒くたに捉えがちですが、キャラクターは対極で、だからこそ互いに補完し合うことで、他にはないサウンドを実現しています。
Chrisは数学の学者でもあります。彼曰く数学においては、Patterns（パターン）、Shapes（形）そしてExploration（冒険）が主要なテーマらしいのです。彼はそれを音楽でも追求しているため、彼はなかなか面白いことをやっています。例えば1stシングル’Always’楽曲中の”do re mi fa sol”のフレーズ、実際の音階は ”sol#, fa#, mi, do#”なんだそう。さらに2nd シングル’I’m you’というタイトルも違和感がありますよね。このように彼は、人の既成概念を利用した構造的な面白いアプローチをしています。
一方、Lewisは絵描きです。彼の絵画の多くは自然を題材とし、とてもポエティック。シングルのカバーワークも彼が手がけており、他のバンドではあまりない抽象的な絵画のデザインが素敵です。（InstagramのLewisアカウントでも彼の作品を見れるのでぜひご覧ください。）
物事を構造的に考えるChris、感性を生かすLewis、この2人の組み合わせが独特の個性を生み出します。楽曲は、即興で作ったような勢いがありながら、よく聴くと各パートの構成が考えられていることに気づきます。このバランスはリスナーにとって快適です。
実は子供の頃（Belugium時代）から、Chrisがコード進行を作って、それを受けてLewisがメロディラインを作っていたのです。その積み重ねこそが互いの信頼の源泉。 Lewis曰く”僕らは多かれ少なかれ大抵一緒に曲を作るんだ。まるでLennon＆McCartneyようにね。だからお互いの曲が完成していなかったとしても、協力しあって作り上げていくんだ。”
そんな完璧な二人のフォーメーションにJuliaが加入。Juliaの美しい歌声と繊細なパーカッションが加わることで、Oracle Sistersは理想に大きく近づきました。
続いて、音楽シーンにおけるOracle Sistersの立ち位置について考察します。彼らは現在活発なパリのシーンに包含されるのはもちろんです。それに加え、別の軸でも捉えることができます。それは懐古主義的なポップミュージックともいうべき新しいムーブメントです。海外のレビューでは、GrizzlyBearやMac DeMarcoとの比較もされており、たしかに似ている部分もありますが、本質が異なります。Oracle Sistersはもっとオーガニックで懐古主義的。音はどこまでも繊細で、ロマンチック。彼らのファッションはまるで70年代からタイムスリップしてきたかのようですからね。
ロックにおける懐古主義といえば、00年代初頭のロックンロールリバイバルのムーブメントが挙げられます。手法は２つありました。そして今、それらにトライしている若手のアーティストは注目に値します。
1つ目は、The Strokesのように’古きを知って新しいサウンドを作る’。今ではLa FemmeやCrack Cloudがやっていますね。
2つ目は、The White Stripesのように’古き良き時代のサウンドを、今の時代に鳴らす’。その新しい流れもまた今起こっています。この手法は、参照する時代と今の時代の認識のギャップを利用し、時に強烈なインパクトを残します。それはCELINE WOMEN’S AW 2019-20COLLECITONにおいて、Hediが行ったことでもありました。現在の音楽シーンでは、UKのDan Lyonsによるグラムロック、William de Courcyのピアノとボーカルによるポップス、そしてこのOracle Sistersによるアコースティックサウンド が後者の系譜に連なります。
Oracle SistersはPapoozなど同時代のバンドだけでなく、過去の多くのアーティストを高く評価しています（Julie London、Billie Holiday、 Tom Waits、 Harry Nilsson、 John Jacob Niles、 Bessie Smith、 Slim Harpo、そしてWolfgang Amadeus Mozart）。この嗜好からも、彼らが過去に強い憧憬を持っていることが洞察されます。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
Lewis:To have no regrets.’Spotlight’ was written and recorded in Paris about the night world, love and memory.

For that, how did you try to make these songs?

Chris:We made them sitting in a small apartment with two guitars writing over a bottle of wine.

Julia:The theme is liberation of mind, spirit and body by communicating with angels and making them dance.

Why did you choose ‘Oracle Sisters’ as your band name?
A
Lewis:Because we wanted to form a name that sounded like ‘Motorcycle Gang’ and like ‘Hell’s Angels’. So we found a name that sounded like the music we wanted to make: a family that made music with otherworldly aspirations.

Lewis:right now…Bob Dylan, Buckminster Fuller, Bruno Latour and Hiroshi Yashimura.

Would you recommend French bands of same generation？ Then how do you think about French rock scene in these days?
A
Julia:It is difficult to have a ‘scene’ when everyone lives on the internet…But we like our friends ‘Papooz’ and appreciate the musical history in Paris of Serge Gainsbourg,Daft Punk,Justice,Georges Brassens and Edith Piaf. We live in our own world too.How is the rock scene in Japan? who’s going to change the world?

僕らはもともと’Motorcycle Gang’ とか’Hell’s Angels’みたいな響きのバンド名にしたいと思っていて。それで、そういった響きで、なおかつ僕らが奏でたいと思っている音楽にふさわしい名前、つまり別世界への願望で音楽を作る家族といった意味のバンド名を見つけたんだ。

ちょうど今はBuckminster Fuller（USの思想家、デザイナー）, Bruno Latour（Franceの哲学者） and Hiroshi Yashimura（Japanのアンビエント作曲家）かな。

同世代でおすすめのFranceのバンドを挙げてもらえますか？ また現在のFranceのロックシーンをどのように思いますか？
A
Julia:インターネットの世界に住む私達にとっては、’シーン’を持つというのは難しいわね。それでも友達のPapoozは好きだし、Serge Gainsbourg、Daft Punk,、Justice、Georges BrassensやEdith Piafといったパリの音楽の歴史の価値を進んで認めるわ。ただ私達はそれぞれが独自の世界に住んでいるわよね。日本のシーンはどうなの？ 誰が世界を変えるというの？

ICONIC PHOTO TEE
This is ‘ICONIC PHOTO TEE’ using a photo of the bridge at night, which is the symbol of my blog. I was glad that William, model and artist from Canada, wore it privately. He is a friend of Ryan McGinley and his subject. He is also a show model for Dior, Valentino and Alexander McQueen. In Japan, he is active in magazines and brand catalogs such as the cover of ‘Them magazine’.
こちらは私のブログの象徴となる夜の橋の写真を使用した’ICONIC PHOTO TEE’です。カナダ出身のモデル兼アーティストのWilliamくんがプライベートで着てくれて嬉しかったです。彼は、Ryan McGinleyの友人かつ彼の被写体でもあります。彼はまた、Dior、Valentino、Alexander McQueenのショーモデルでもあります。日本では’Them magazine’の表紙など、雑誌やブランドのカタログなどで活躍しています。
