En Attendant Ana was formed in 2015 and is a quintet indie band based in Paris. They released their 1st LP ‘Lost And Found’ in 2018. The 2nd LP ‘Juillet’ was just released in January 2020. Current members are Margaux Bouchaudon, Camille Frechou, Maxence Tomasso, Antoine Vaugelade and Adrien Pollin.

I would like to introduce a Paris indie rock band, En Attendant Ana. They consciously choose the word ‘Indie’ and describe them. There are deep reasons for that.

In 2010, Margaux (Vocals) and former member Romain entered the university. They met there and started making music. However, their activities did not go very well, and they temporarily stopped their activities. Margaux then focuses on supporting Parisian bands instead of her musical activities. Because it was too difficult for Parisians to live as an indie band. First, Paris was too expensive to live for young people. And the number of bars where events are held has decreased. Police often came to the venue due to complaints such as noise. In response to this situation, she organized live events in Paris where the bands could be active. That was because she wanted to see their live.

Margaux and Romain saw the other bands in action and decided that they wanted to form a band again. They gathered members and started the band in earnest in 2015. While they were considering the name of the band, they stayed at a hotel in the Skarbeek district of Brussels. It was on the upper floor of a 24-hour bar, Le cheval de fer. The band meets a woman named Ana who works there. That night, a drunk man touched her body. She drove her away with strong words of blame. After that, she worked undisturbed and talked to Margaux. Margaux was impressed by her and wanted to be like her. So she borrowed Ana’s name and naming the band En Attendant Ana.

What is important in this episode is that Margaux realized that she was strongly attracted to the concept of ‘independence’. She wanted to do the band without relying on anyone. Moreover, in Paris, where music activities are difficult. She did not want to lose the difficulty. So she borrowed the name Ana.

Finally, 1st LP ‘Lost and Found’ was released in April 2018. As summarized in the title, here is their own music that they pursued without giving up. The songs were recorded from a wide range of times. Both were mixed, such as ‘Tinkle Twinkle’ made by Margaux and Romain before the band was formed, and ‘This Could Be’ made by band members at the time. It was exactly their culmination. Especially, the song ‘The Violence Inside’ is great, so if you haven’t heard it yet, be sure to check it out.

About two years later, ‘Juillet’ was released in January 2020. The album was recorded for a week at Studio Claudio in the French countryside. They arranged all the songs in the current band. So the flow as an album is more solid than the previous work. The LP starts abruptly with the Chorus part of ‘Down The Hill’, followed by a song with a sense of speed, such as ‘Do You Understand?’ And in the middle of the LP, ballad song’From My Bruise To An Island’, you can enjoy a pleasant sound. Their songs remind me of Best Coast and Arcade Fire.

We should note that the band members do not inlude Romain. I don’t know what happened. To be precise, I asked Margaux about his absence. But she did not dare to answer it. There must be a deep reason there. Still, I know. How hard it was for her .That feeling will be ignited in the ninth song ‘When It Burns’. In this song, Chorus from the beginning of ‘Down The Hill’ is refrained with a very melancholic sound. So far, she has been fighting for independence. But waiting for her was a sense of loss. I also knew she had overcome that sadness.On the last song, ‘The Light That Slept Inside’, I could feel a ray of light, in contrast to the desperate deep loneliness of the past. This may be the expression of the theme of this work, which she talks about in a later interview, ‘independence’ and ‘metamorphosis’.

パリのインディロックバンド、En Attendant Anaを紹介します。彼女達は、意識的に’インディ’という言葉を選び、バンドを形容しています。それには深い理由があります。

2010年に、Margaux(マルゴー／Vocals)と旧メンバーでもあるRomain（ロマン）が大学に入学。そこで二人は出会い、楽曲制作を始めました。しかしながら、二人での活動はあまりうまくいかず、一旦活動を休止しました。その後Margauxは、自身の音楽活動の代わりに、パリのバンドをサポートすることに専念します。というのも、パリでインディとしての活動することが、同地に住むバンド達にとってあまりに厳しかったからです。そもそもパリは家賃が高く、音楽を志す若者が住むこと自体が難しいことでした。イベントの会場となるバーは減っていきました。また、騒音などの苦情などで会場に、警察がやってくることもしばしばでした。そのような状況に対して、彼女はライヴイベント達をオーガナイズし、バンド達が活動できる状況をパリに作っていきました。それは彼女自身が彼らのライヴを見たかったからでもありました。

MargauxとRomainは、他のバンド達が活躍する姿を目にすることで、改めて彼女達自身もバンドを結成したいと思うに至りました。彼女達は、メンバーを集め、2015年に本格的にバンドをスタートさせました。そんな彼女達が、バンドの名前を検討していた頃、ブリュッセルのスカールベーク地区にあるホテルに滞在しました。そこは24時間営業のバー、Le cheval de fer（ルシュヴァルドフェル／鉄の馬）の上の階にありました。バンドはそこで働くAnaという女性に出会います。その晩、酔った男が彼女の体を触りました。彼女はその男に対して、強く非難の言葉を浴びせかけ追い払いました。その後、彼女は動じることもなく、これまで通りに仕事をし、Margauxらと話しをしました。Margauxは彼女に感銘を受け、彼女のようにありたいと、Anaの名前を拝借し、バンド名をEn Attendant Ana（アナを待っている）としました。

このエピソードで重要なことは、Margauxが’独立’という概念に強く惹かれていることを自覚したことです。彼女は、誰に頼ることもせず、自分達自身でバンドをやりたかった。それも、大好きな都市ではあるけれど、音楽活動をするには厳しいパリにおいて。彼女はその困難に負けたくなかった。

そして遂に、1st LP‘Lost and Found’を2018年の4月にリリース。タイトルに集約される通り、彼女達が、諦めかけ、それでも追い求めた自身の音楽がここにはあります。楽曲は、幅広い時代に制作されたものが収録されました。バンド結成以前のMargauxとRomainで制作した’Tinkle Twinkle’や、当時のバンドメンバー達と制作した’This Could Be’など、その両方が混在していました。まさに、彼女達の集大成でした。特に、’The Violence Inside’という曲が素晴らしいので、まだ聴いたことがない方はぜひチェックしてください。

それから約2年の時を経て、2020年1月’Juillet’がリリースされました。このアルバムはフランスの田舎にあるスタジオクラウディオで1週間にわたって録音されました。前作とは異なり、今のバンド編成でしっかりとアレンジを詰めていきました。だから前作よりアルバムとしての流れがしっかりしています。LPは、唐突に’Down the Hill’のChorusパートから始まり、先行曲でもある’Do You Understand?’など疾走感のある曲が続き、中盤の’From My Bruise To An Island’のバラードでしっかりと聴かせていきます。彼女達の曲は、私にBest CoastやArcade Fireを思い出させます。

注目すべきはバンドのメンバーに、Romainがいないことです。何があったのか、私はわかりません。正確に言うと、私は彼の不在について、Margauxに尋ねました。しかし、彼女はあえてそれについては答えませんでした。そこには深い理由があるのでしょう。それでも、私にはわかるのです。彼がいなくなったことが、彼女にいかにきついものであったか。その感情は9曲目’When It Burns’にて燃え上がります。この曲では、冒頭の’Down The Hill’のChorusがひどくメランコリックなサウンドでリフレインされます。彼女は独立を希求し、戦ってきました。その先にあったのは、大切な人との別れ、喪失感でした。しかしながら、その悲しみに対して、彼女は決着をつけたということも私には分かりました。ラストの曲’The Light That Slept Inside’にて、これまでの絶望的な深いの孤独と対照的な、一筋の光が感じることができました。このコントラストこそ、彼女が後半のインタビューで語っている本作のテーマ、’自立’と’メタモフォシス（変化／成長）’を表現しているのでしょう。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this LP?
A
Independence. The idea of being the only one to decide for yourself (destiny, body etc.).

Please tell us about it in terms of composition, lyrics and artwork.
A
We recorded in Studio Claudio in the middle of the forest an hour from Paris. This is where we shoot the photo that is on the cover! It represents a king of shelter, a fort in which we would feel reassured. We built the walls and as soon as the pictures where made, the whole thing fell down and was destroyed.. we had a lot of fun making i!

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
We usually talks about transition phases and metamorphosis. On this particular album, we talked mostly about loss and the idea of letting go of a person, love, or dreams. It also talks about self respect and independence.

Why did you choose En Attendant Ana as your band name?
A
It refers to a waitress we met in Brussels back at the time we were looking for a band name. She has some kind of an aura, she’s brave, intelligent and independent. I guess we waited to be like her maybe!

Who inspire you?
A
We listen to a lot of music of course so we get inspired any time we discover something new. In this album you will probably hear various musical influences.. The Organ, Electrelane and Stereolab as we often say… but so much more!
As far as the lyrics are concerned, I write songs inspired by my own experiences and hide it behind metaphors or poetic images based on memories I have from my academic studies (British/American literature and art history).

Then how do you think about French rock scene in these days?
A
We come from Paris so there are a lot of band we love and follow but appart from the idea of an independent one, we don’t really like to talk about ‘musical scene’… Anyway, you can take a listen to EggS, Belmont Witch, Sex Sux, Biche, Entracte Twist, Marie Mathématique, Michelle Blades, Portron Portron Lopez, Jean Felzine, Requin Chagrin, Remi Parson, 39th and the Nortons, Thomas Pradier, Bootchy Temples, Marble Arch or Mustang….. these all are french bands we love and support!

パリから1時間で行ける、森の真ん中にあるスタジオ・クラウディオで録音したの。これは、アルバムのカバー写真を撮影した場所でもあるわ。それは、シェルターの王であり、私たちが安心できる砦を象徴している。 私たちは壁を作り、写真が作られるとすぐに、すべてのものが落ちて壊れてしまったけれど。でも、このセットを作るのはすごく楽しかったわ！

A
Anaとは、バンド名を考えていた時に、ブリュッセルで出会ったウェイトレスのことなの。 彼女はある種のオーラを持っていて。勇敢で、知的で、独立してもいた 私達はそう、彼女のようになるのを待っていたのよ！

誰からインスピレーションを受けています？
A
もちろんたくさんの音楽を聴いているから、何か新しいことを発見するたびに刺激を受けているわ。このアルバムでは、おそらく様々な音楽的影響が聞こえると思う。私たちがよく紹介するような、The Organ、 Electrelane、それからStereolab。それだけなく、もっとたくさんね！
歌詞に関する限り、私は自分の経験からインスピレーションを得た曲を書いている。その個人的な経験を、これまで勉強してきた（英国/アメリカ文学と美術史）の隠喩や詩的なイメージを使って、隠して表現しているの。

それでは、最近のフランスのロックシーンについてどう思いますか？
A
私たちはパリ出身なので、大好きでフォローしているバンドがたくさんあるわ。ただ、独立したアイデアである各バンドとは異なる、「音楽シーン」という捉え方で紹介するのは本当に好きではないの。
でもとにかく紹介するとなると、EggSをはじめ、Belmont Witch、Sex Sux、Biche、Entracte Twist、MarieMathématique、Michelle Blades、Portron Portron Lopez、Jean Felzine、Requin Chagrin、Remi Parson、39th and the Nortons、Thomas Pradier、Bootchy Temples、Marble ArchまたはMustangなどなど、これらのバンドは全て私たちが愛しサポートするフランスのバンド達ね。
