Brion Starr is a solo artist and performer from New York. He Released his 1st LP ’Global Identity’ in May 2019. Furthermore he will release his 2nd album ‘Rope Memories’ on November 28th for the Japanese market. Also he became a hot topic at the after-show performance of the CELINE MEN ’S SS 2020 COLLECTION.

♪REVIEW♪
There are currently two trends in new musical movements. One is the flow of New Wave represented by La Femme and Crack Cloud, Bodega. The other is the flow of nostalgic rock / pop music represented by Dan Lyons and William de Courcy , Oracle Sisters. This time, Brion Starr, whom I introduce, belongs to the latter.
‘David Bowie meets The Velvet Underground’ is the best way to express his charm. Not to mention the sound, it reminds David’s worldview and looks, Velvets’s underground cool image. In addition, the music is refined by his sense. Glam sound became easier to listen to in the pop, the legacy of the past has evolved into a modern sound. The point that I think he is great is that while making the influence of past artists deeply, his music has been completed as an original.
Brion will release its sister album ‘Rope Memories’ (LP) as early as late November, following ‘Global Identity’ (LP) released in May this year. These were recorded at Konk Studios in London, where also bands such as the legndary The Kinks recorded. Among the support musicians is Robbie Wood, who is also a member of Swim Deep and famous as a model and muse of Hedi.
In contrast to the previous work, ‘Rope Memories’ (LP) is less intense musically and can be immersed in his poetic world that is more introspective. Produced on the theme of space travel with a lover, this work not only shows composers but also his skills as a lyricist. It may be difficult for someone who does not speak fluently in English just like me to understand to the lyrics from the songs. However, if you know a rough story (which he introduced in an interview), the title and sound alone are enough to make you image the world of this album.
This album includes like the song such as up-tempo ‘Mind Love’ reminiscent of Velvets and ‘Toward Heaven’ with a magnificent scale like David Bowie. It can only be said that it is happy to hear the mood of the rock of Glam in the 70s with the sound of the present era. This work will warm your heart in this winter.
He will tour in Japan again from November 26th until December 6th, 2019. Let’s go see him live.

現在、新しい音楽のムーヴメントの潮流が二つあります。一つは、La FemmeやCrack Cloud、Bodegaに代表されるNew Waveの流れ。もう一つは、Dan LyonsやWilliam de Courcy、Oracle Sistersらに代表される懐古的ロック／ポップミュージックの流れです。今回ご紹介するBrion Starrは後者の流れに属します。
彼の魅力を一言で表現するのなら、’David Bowie meets The Velvet Underground’。サウンドはもちろん、Davidの世界観とルックス、Velvetsのアンダーグラウンドなクールなイメージを彷彿とさせます。さらに、彼ならではのセンスのよさで、音楽が洗練されています。Glamサウンドがよりポップで聴きやすく、過去の遺産がモダンなサウンドに進化されてます。私が彼をすごいと思う点は、過去のアーティスト達からの影響を色濃く感じさせながらも、あくまでオリジナルとして音楽を完成させている点です。
Brionは、今年5月にリリースされた’Global Identity’(LP)に続き、11月下旬に姉妹アルバム’Rope Memories’(LP)を早くもリリースします。これらは伝説的バンドThe Kinksも利用したという、ロンドンのKonk Studiosでレコーディングされました。サポートミュージシャンの中には、あのSwim Deepのメンバーでもあり、Hediのモデルとしても有名なRobbie Woodも参加しています。
前作とは対照的に、’Rope Memories’(LP)は激しさはおさえられ、より内省的な彼の詩的世界に浸ることができます。恋人との宇宙旅行をテーマに制作された本作は、コンポーザーのみならず、作詞家としての彼のスキルがいかんなく発揮されています。私のような母国語としない者にとっては、歌から歌詞を聴き取るのが難しいかもしれません。しかしながら、大まかなストーリーさえわかっていれば（後述のインタビューで彼が紹介してくれた）、タイトルとサウンドだけでも映像が浮かぶほど上手く作られています。Velvetsを彷彿とさせるアップテンポな’Mind Love’やDavid Bowieのような壮大なスケール感をもつ’Toward Heaven’など名曲揃い。70年代のGlamのロックのムードを、今の時代のサウンドで聴けるのは幸福としか言いようがありません。これから寒い冬に何度も聴きたくなる、心に寄り添うアルバムになってくれるでしょう。

About ‘Rope Memories’
Q
What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
I tell stories, reflections of impressions of moments that give me a clandestine feeling of another world in which we could be living where value is intrinsic and people live in harmony. I suppose I’d like to communicate to others this: a new world awaits you.

For that,how did you try to make this work? Please let me know from the perspective of music , lyrics and artwork.

‘Rope Memories’ is a story that I wrote, a science fiction novel of sorts which I’ve condensed into a series of lyrical ideas. The story revolves around the protagonist whom has to choose if he stays on a fated earth with his family or takes all the money that he has made and buys himself and his partner a ticket to a new planet which is exclusively for the wealthy. He has enough money, but only for 2 people so he has to leave everyone else behind. This is reflected in both the music and the artwork. Side A of the record is the “earth” side and side B is the “space” side

What is the theme of music production?
A
For me making music is a phenomenological experience, which is about combining the everyday experience with writing, I consider myself a writer more than anything, an artist overall but writing is my strongest suit.

Who inspire you?
A
Mostly my friends, most recently; The Wilson siblings Athena and Nigel, Charlie Thomas Sands, Andrew Long, Mitchel Lyne, Piet Alder(Taxi Gauche Records owner), and of course Scott Walker.

Would you recommend American bands of same generation.
A
Automatic are my favorite current American band, they are from Los Angeles.

How did you meet Hedi? What did you talk about?
A
I have met Hedi a few times now, but most recently at the after party we played for Celine Mens SS2020, we mostly talk about music when we talk. We have very similar interests. He has very good taste, and when it comes to clothes he is an unparalleled genius.

‘Rope Memories’は、僕が書いた物語であり、一連の叙情的なアイデアに凝縮したSF小説だ。 物語は主人公を中心に展開する。主人公は家族と一緒に運命の大地に留まるか、自分が稼いだお金をすべて手に入れて、自分とパートナーに裕福な人専用の新しい惑星へのチケットを購入する。 彼には十分なお金があるが、チケットは2人分しかないので、他のみんなを置き去りにしていく。 これらは音楽とアートワークの両方に反映した。 レコードのサイドAは「地球」サイド、サイドBは「スペース」サイドとなっているんだ。

A
音楽を作ることは、日常の経験と執筆を組み合わせることによる、現象学的な経験なんだ。僕は自分自身を何よりも作家だと思っているし、全体としてアーティストであるとも考えているけれども、書くことは僕にとって最強の服（スーツ）なんだ。

A

A

A
Hediとは今までに数回会ったことがあるけれど、一番最近では、CELINE MEN’S SS2020のアフターパーティーで僕らが演奏した時かな。彼と話すのはほとんど音楽についてだね。僕らは非常に似た興味を持っているんだ。彼はとてもセンスがいいし、服に関しては他に比べようのない天才だよね。
