♪PROFILE♪

Voo Le Voo is a theatrical project between Lily Ashley and Hugo Hamlet. They met at Phillippe Gaulier’s Clown school in Paris in October 2017 and They started this unit in 2018. Hugo is a musician and clown, Lily is a poet. They have released three singles so far.(In 2018 ‘Take Me To Africa’ and ‘Old Napoli’, in 2019 ‘Madame’)

Lily Ashley and Hugo Hamlet were born at the same hospital in London. Twenty-five years later, they finally met at Phillippe Gaulier’s Clown school in Paris and formed Voo Le Voo.

These days, they’ve also been spotlighted for being invited as guests on Celine’s show and Hugo’s participation in the brand’s campaign. Like many musicians, they are also fashion muses. Although they are very different from other people. That is, the role of the musician as well as fashion muse is not their main business. Their origin is theater and they are actors.

Voo Le Voo may attracted Hedi Slimane not only to Hugo’s genderless looks, but also to the fact that they were from renowned clown schools in Paris. Perhaps they’ve also made a good impression to him that Lily had studied performance and design at Central Saint Martins in London before, and that Hugo’s parents were well-known dancers in London.

Of course, they are actually performing theater. As an extension of their activities, they are acting as muses asked to perform, as music units that can transmit themselves in a more compact form than theater. Therefore, their musicality is quite different from the artists of the same age.

Their song ‘Madame’ is just like a classic musical with Lily’s poetry reading and Hugo’s whispering. By contrast their sound is so modern with computer drumming. For this reason, listeners are attracted to a unique atmosphere that makes it difficult to tell whether it is a past work or a modern work.

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
Theatre, Joy and Passion.

Why did you choose Voo Le Voo your unit name?
A
We choose the name ‘Voo Le Voo’ after the ABBA song ‘Voulez-vous'(Note:which means do you want?). It is a salute to Hugo’s Swedish roots and the fact that Lily is a poet that can’t spell.

Who inspires you?
A
Nature,it is amazing, so vast, so simple, so bizarre, so strong and so delicate. So peaceful and destructive. a total contradiction and totally uncertain. The perfect representative of everything, everything is uncertain, everything changes everything change is everything.

About ‘Madam’ (single)

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
Introducing our new single, Madame – it is the fantasy of lust, it is our favourite song yet but we only make favourites!
It is very important that we take the job of entertainment seriously and its our job to take peoples clothes off. Madame makes you feel fuzzy and cute.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
Music is made by Hugo from a place of pure pleasure and play.
Lily writes the lyrics to the songs, usually it is a very fast and repetitive process. Hugo will produce a melody and a beat and Lily will listen to him groaning until she begins hearing words, from there we find the story.
Artwork was by William Waterworth, we love this shoot of us, we usually use any old photos that are knocking around and are so lucky that so many great WW shots are in our archives.
