Ugly is a band from Cambridge/London and formed in Sixth form college in a music technology class. Having had a few members come and go over the years – Ugly is now (Theo, Harrison, Jasmine, Tom, Harry, Sam). The long-awaited new single ‘I’m Happy You’re Here’ has just been released in June 2022.
Uglyはケンブリッジ/ロンドン出身のバンドで、Sixth form collegeの音楽技術のクラスで結成された。数年前からメンバーが入れ替わり、現在ではUgly（Theo, Harrison, Jasmine, Tom, Harry, Sam）が活動している。2022年6月には待望の新作‘I’m Happy You’re Here’がリリースされたばかり。

Q
Would you tell us how the band got its name?
A
There’s not much of a story, just a brainstorming session led to us thinking it would be funny to call ourselves Ugly, but it’s a name that’s stuck with us now and don’t think it’ll be going anywhere!
Q
Which artists or bands have influenced the band’s sound?
A
As we’ve been going for quite a while there have been many influences coming and going. At the moment I’d say it’s a real blend of modern folk such as Fleet Foxes and Caroline mixed with early 2000’s pop such as Keane and Elbow.

A
新曲に込めた苦労や、前作（2019年発売！）からパワーアップした姿を見てもらえたらと思う。僕個人としては、過渡期とそれを乗り越えたときのほろ苦い喜びを表現した曲になっているよ。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through the new song?
A
I hope that people can see the hard work we’ve put into the new music and that we’ve upped our game since our last release (in 2019!). For me personally it’s a song that represents a transitional period and the bittersweet joy of coming through that period.

How did you make the song?
A
It was the first song of the band that had been written as a truly collaborative work, which is what we are striving for from here on out. It works really well to have so many influences to create something truly unique. Although it can be demanding and take a long time it always pays off.

バンド名の由来をお聞かせください。
A
特にストーリーはないんだけど、（アイディアを出すための）ブレストで、自分たちをUgly（醜い）と呼んだら面白いんじゃないかと思っただけなんだ。でも、この名前は僕らのなかでずっと残っていて、この先もずっと変わらないだろうね。

バンドサウンドに影響を与えたアーティストやバンドを教えてください。
A
バンドを始めてからかなりの時間が経過しているので、多くの影響を受けている。今のところ、Fleet FoxesやCarolineのようなモダンフォークと、KeaneやElbowのような2000年代初期のポップが混ざったような感じかな。

どのように曲作りをされましたか？
A
この曲は、僕らが今後目指している、真の共同作業として作られたバンドの最初の曲になった。本当にユニークなものを作るためには、多くの影響を受けることがとても効果的だ。大変なことで、長い時間がかかるかもしれないけれど、必ず報われると思っているよ。
