PROFILE
The Vacant Lots is a post-punk electro band formed by Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen from Brooklyn, NY. They debuted with the single ‘Confusion’ in 2011 on Mexican Summer. Jared co-produced with Hedi Slimane an extended mix of ‘Girl’ by Suicide for CELINE MEN’S WINTER 2023 SOUNDTRACK. Furthermore, the band just released their latest album ‘Interiors’ on October 13, 2023.

INTERVIEW WITH JARED ARTAUD
– What is the theme of ‘Interiors’?
They’re all love songs. ‘Interiors’ is really about looking inwards. Diving deep and carving out the pain. I just hope that in doing so that I created something beautiful, that’ll last forever, and could make someone feel less alone. I get flooded with so many ideas and feelings and just try to channel it all into the work. Give it everything I have like it’s the last record I’ll ever make. Sometimes you have to go through hell to get to the other side.
– Could you explain your band’s black and white artwork aesthetic?
I designed our first album ‘Depature’ cover after seeing this ad for psychological testing on the subway in NYC. It had this scintillating grid and I was like this is it! and just ran with it. I wanted to create a strong visual identity for the band, something minimal yet maximal. The black and white op art has a simplicity, duality, and ordered chaos feel that works really well for the band’s aesthetic. We’ve been working with our longtime design collaborator Ivan Liechti from Switzerland who’s done almost all of our album sleeves including ‘Interiors’.
– What’s the process of writing and recording like for you?
I like to start by filling up notebooks with lyrics and ideas, and then suddenly it’s like an avalanche. Like this explosive level of intense productivity and that’s when I start making music. I just let everything pour through. I’ll get into this zone, it’s like a week or two of nonstop working and then I’ll have 6-8 songs mapped out. Spend another week going over it, revising it, arranging it. The magic comes when Brian and I get together to produce it.
– How did the band come into existence?
I dropped out of college and decided to form a band. I met Brian in Burlington, Vermont and we just started writing songs together, releasing records, and touring. We really bonded over the shared music we loved like Iggy Pop’s ‘The Idiot’, Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer World’, and Joy Division.
– What is the origin and meaning of the band’s name?
I lifted it from a William Burroughs novel ‘The Soft Machine’. I remember reading this line, “A rack of rusty iron and concrete set in vacant lots and rubble, dotted with chemical gardens.” I thought Vacant Lots would make a killer band name. The meaning is to fill a void.
– What are some artists who have influenced you?
Link Wray, The Gun Club, Gram Parsons, Albert Ayler, Akira Kurosawa, Jim Jarmusch, Emily Dickinson.

– ‘Interiors’のテーマは何ですか？
曲は全てラブソングなんだ。 ‘Interiors’ は本当に内側を見つめることについてのアルバム。深く潜り、痛みを刻み出すこと。そのようにして、永遠に残る美しいものを作り上げ、誰かを孤独でないと感じさせることができたらと願っているよ。たくさんのアイデアや感情があふれてきて、そのすべてを作品に注ぎ込もうとする。これが最後のレコードだと思って全力を尽くすんだ。向こう側に行くためには、時には地獄を経験しなければならない。
– バンドのアートワークについて教えてください。
最初のアルバム‘Depature’ のジャケットは、ニューヨークの地下鉄で心理テストの広告を見てデザインしたんだ。その広告にはきらめくようなグリッドが描かれていて、これだ！と思ってそのまま用いたんだ。バンドの強いビジュアル・アイデンティティを作りたかったし、ミニマルでありながら最大限のものを作りたかった。黒と白のオプ・アートは、シンプルさ、二重性、秩序ある混沌を感じさせ、バンドの美学にとてもよく合っている。‘Interiors’を含む私たちのアルバム・スリーブのほとんどを手がけてくれている、長年のデザイン協力者であるスイスのIvan Liechtiと一緒に仕事をしているよ。
– あなたにとって、作曲やレコーディングのプロセスはどのようなものですか？
ノートを歌詞やアイデアでいっぱいにするところから始めるのが好きなんだけど、突然、雪崩のようにアイデアが湧いてくるんだ。爆発的なレベルの強烈な生産性が生まれて、そこから音楽を作り始め、ただすべてを注ぎ込む。このゾーンに入ると、1週間か2週間、ひたすら作業して、6曲から8曲の曲ができあがる。さらに1週間かけて、それを見直し、修正し、アレンジする。Brianと私が一緒になってプロデュースするとき、マジックはやってくる。
– バンド結成の経緯を教えてください。
私は大学を中退し、バンドを結成することにしたんだ。バーモント州のバーリントンでBrianに出会って、一緒に曲を作り、レコードをリリースし、ツアーをするようになった。Iggy Popの ‘The Idiot’、Kraftwerkの‘Computer World’、Joy Divisionなど、好きな音楽を共有することで絆が深まったよ。
– バンド名の由来と意味を教えてください。
William Burroughsの小説 ‘The Soft Machine’ から取ったんだ。“錆びた鉄とコンクリートの棚が空き地 (vacant lots)と瓦礫の中に置かれ、ケミカル・ガーデンが点在している。” 私はVacant Lotsが素晴らしいバンド名になると思った。空白を埋めるという意味が込められている。
