‘TIME SLIP’

♪PROFILE♪

The Loom is the musical project of twins, George Barnett and Jack Barnett of These New Puritans. In February 2021, the launch of the project was announced to the public with the contribution of the soundtrack ‘Time Slip’ to Celine Homme 2020-2021 Autumn/Winter Collection ‘Teen Knight Poem’. The track was supervised and co-produced by Hedi Slimane.
These New Puritans was formed in 2006 in Southend-on-Sea, England, the UK, by Barnet’s twin brothers. They received a lot of attention before their CD debut when they contributed the song ‘Navigate, Navigate’ to the Dior Homme Autumn/Winter Collection 2007-2008 and George participated in the show as a model. Since 2008, they have released four albums. Their second album ‘Hidden’ in 2010 was named NME’s best album of the year, the album was reissued under the name ‘Hidden [MMXX]’ to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The LoomはThese New PuritansのGeorge BarnettとJack Barnettの双子による音楽プロジェクト。2021年2月、Celine Homme 2020-2021 Autumn/Winter Collection ‘Teen Knight Poem’へサウンドトラック’Time Slip’を提供したことで、このプロジェクトの始動が公開された。この楽曲は、Hedi Slimaneが監修・共同制作として携わっている。
These New Puritansは、2006年Barnetの双子の兄弟を中心にthe UKのイングランドのサウスエンド・オン・シーにて結成。彼らは、Dior Homme Autumn/Winter Collection 2007-2008に楽曲’Navigate, Navigate’を提供したことと、Georgeがモデルとしてそのショーに参加したことで、CDデビューの前に大きな注目を集めた。2008年以降、彼らはこれまでに4枚のアルバムをリリースしている。2010年の2ndアルバム’Hidden’は、NMEの年間ベストアルバムに選ばれ、2020年には発売10周年を記念し、’Hidden [MMXX]’の名称でリイシューされた。

Celine Homme 2020-2021 Autumn/Winter Collection ‘Teen Knight Poem’

Hedi Slimane’s new collection was a marvel, bringing together many different fashions from different times and places with a focus on young men, and opening up a new era of style. The way he did this could be described as dimensional compression.

The fashion of multiple eras is multilayered and intricately intertwined, and various references can be deciphered.

・Hedi Slimane’s redefinition of the bourgeoisie style at Celine, referring to the 70s and 80s, and its completion in Autumn/Winter 2020-2021.
・Elements of Renaissance knight. In the Dior Homme Autumn/Winter 2003-2004 Collection ‘Luster’, Hedi used knight’s armor as a motif.
・The UK punk rock fashion. It even includes Scottish folk costumes that have influenced punk fashion. The kilt is particularly noteworthy in that it is worn by a traditional marching band.
・In the absence of Hedi, the fashion scene in the mid to late decade was led by the street fashion revival of the 90’s with Balenciaga (Demna Gvasalia), Off White (Virgil Abloh) and Fear Of God (Jerry Lorenzo). And of course, Supreme, the king of street brands, was also a big factor.
・The E-Boy style represented by TikTok, which was featured in the previous collection.

The result was a collection that encompassed the men’s fashion of the latter half of the decade and determined the direction of the twenties. Also, Hedi was good at opening up a new era, but now he is not only good at that, he has a wide range of ability to put together the fashion of the current era, and I felt his maturity in that.

Adding even more depth to this collection was The Loom, a new project by Barnett’s twin brothers from These New Puritans (Tnps). Not only the soundtrack, but also their production methods and even their very existence are part of the underlying theme of this collection, ‘Time Slip’.

・ Tnps contributed music to the Dior Homme Autumn/Winter 2006-2007 Collection, which was based on the French cold wave.
・Tnps themselves have also used time travel techniques, with historical motifs often appearing in the titles and lyrics of their work, as seen in their first album ‘Beat Pyramid’. In addition, vocalist Jack once wore chainmail in a live performance.
・’Time Slip’ is a song that combines marching songs with French cold wave, while limiting the sounds to traditional marching drums, cold sub(bass synth) and vocals.
・The soundtrack of this collection, ‘Time Slip’, is reminiscent of the sound of their second album, ‘Hidden’, which was released 11 years ago. The sound of sharpening knives, for example.
・The ‘Time Slip’ credit is worth noting. While Jack is a control freak and has led Tnps in songwriting, George’s name is listed before Jack’s on the credit of this soundtrack. This order may be quite deliberate. Two reasons can be inferred. First, George used to work for Hedi, so communication with him is smooth. Also, from interviews I have conducted with artists who have provided soundtracks for Hedi, I know that he places special emphasis on rhythm when selecting music for his shows. This meant that George, an excellent drummer, had to become the center of the composition, even practically. ・The promotional hoodies that were posted on Instagram by celebrities around the world after the movie of this collection was distributed were symbolic. The year is 2021, and the notation is ‘MMXXI’, which is the same as the notation for Tnps reissue of ‘Hidden [MMXX]’ in 2020.
・Finally, there is the project name The Loom and the song ‘Time Slip’. It reads as if the collection aims to weave in multiple dimensions, as if the analysis so far had been anticipated.

As I was looking at the above mentioned scattered references from various periods, my eyes suddenly stopped at the words ‘Teen Knight Poem’. Of course, this meant rock music during the Renaissance.

Then, I realized.
The black-and-white photographs that Hedi has been taking up to now, even though they were taken in different times and different places, had a perfect sense of unity while encompassing the individuality of each subject. It is as if he, camera in hand, stands in a singular dimension that traverses different times and places, and photographs the subjects (young people) he sees there. The same could be said about the works of others that he has incubated so far. Of course, each individual photograph or work functions as an independent entity. However, the photographs he has taken so far, as well as the portraits and photographs he loves, must have melted together in his world, blended into one, and become something that cannot be separated.
Yes, this collection is an expression of the world of time compression that only he could see. The fashions of many eras overlap with youth at the core. From the compressed mass of all of them, he dug up a number of unique young male figures as if they were sculptures. They were somehow nostalgic, yet at the same time new. Youth, which should have been temporary, had become eternal.

このコレクションでは、Hedi Slimaneによって、時代も場所も異なる多くのファッションが若い男性を中心としてひとつにまとまり、かつ新しい時代のスタイルを切り開くという驚異的なものであった。その手法はまるで、次元圧縮とも言うべきであろうか。

幾重もの時代のファッションが重層的に、複雑に絡みあっており、多様なリファレンスが読み解けるが、ここではいくつか例を挙げよう。

・Hedi SlimaneがCelineにて70-80年代を参照にしながら再定義を行い、Autumn/Winter 2020-2021にて完成させた新しいブルジョワジーのスタイル。
・ルネサンス期の騎士の要素。ちなみにHediは、Dior Homme Autumn/Winter 2003-2004 Collection ‘Luster’において、騎士の甲冑などをモチーフとして取り入れていた。
・パンクファッションに影響を与えた、スコットランドの民族衣装までも含む。特にキルトは伝統的なマーチングバンドが着用している点でも注目だ。
・Hedi不在の10年代半ばから後半にかけてのファッションシーンは、Balenciaga（Demna Gvasalia）、Off White（Virgil Abloh）、Fear Of God（Jerry Lorenzo）など、90年代のストリートファッションのリバイバルが牽引。もちろん、ストリートブランドの王ともいえるSupremeの存在も大きかった。
・前コレクションにて取り上げたTikTokに代表されるE-Boyスタイル。

結果的には、10年代後半のメンズファッションを包括し、20年代の方向性を決定づけるコレクションとなった。また、Hediは新しい時代を切り開いていくことに長けていたが、今の彼はそれだけにとどまらず、今の時代のファッションをまとめ上げるほどの度量の広さがあり、そこに彼の成熟を感じた。

そして、このコレクションにさらなる深みを与えているのがThese New Puritans（以下Tnps）のBarnettの双子の兄弟による新プロジェクトThe Loomだ。サウンドトラックはもちろん、その制作方法、彼らの存在そのものさえ、このコレクションの裏テーマでもある’Time Slip’の一部である。

・Tnpsはフレンチコールドウェーヴを題材としたDior Homme Autumn/Winter 2006-2007 Collectionコレクションに楽曲を提供している。
・Tnps自身もまたタイムスリップの手法を用いてきた。1stアルバム’Beat Pyramid’に代表されるように、作品のタイトルや歌詞に、歴史上のモチーフがたびたび登場している。また、ヴォーカルのJackはライヴパフォーマンスで、鎖帷子を着ていたことがあるほどだ。
・’Time Slip’は使用するサウンドをマーチングドラム、コールドサブ（ベースシンセ）、ヴォーカルだけに絞りつつ、マーチングソングとフレンチコールドウェーヴを結びつけた楽曲である。
・今回のコレクションのサウンドトラックは’Time Slip’は、11年前にリリースされた2ndアルバム’Hidden’時代のサウンドを彷彿とさせる面がある。例えば、刃物を研ぐ音など。
・’Time Slip’のクレジットは注目に値する。JackはコントロールフリークでTnpsの楽曲制作を主導しているが、本作品ではGeorgeが先行している。この順序はかなり意図的なものであろう。それには二つの理由が推察される。まず、GeorgeはかつてHediの下で働いていた経験があり、彼とのコミュニケーションがスムースであること。また、私がこれまでにサウンドトラックをHediに提供したアーティストへのインタビューから、彼がショーの楽曲を選定する際、リズムを特に重視していることが分かっている。そのため、優秀なドラマーであるGeorgeが実質的にも、作曲の中心になる必要があったということだ。Georgeのドラムパフォーマンスに興味を持った方は、Tnpsの’Drum Courts – Where Corals Lie’をお聴きいただきたい。
・このコレクションのムービーが配信された後、世界のセレブリティがInstagramで投稿していた販促用のフーディが象徴的だった。2021年の表記が’MMXXI’なのである。これは、2020年にTnpsがリイシューをした’Hidden [MMXX]’の表記と一致している。
・そして最後にプロジェクト名The Loom（織機：布を織る機械の意味）と楽曲名’Time Slip’である 。まるで、これまでの分析を予期していたかのように、幾重もの次元を織り込むことを狙いとしたコレクションであるかのように読み取れる。

上記に記した、いろいろな時代のバラバラに散らばったリファレンスを眺めていると、ふと’Teen Knight Poem’の文字で私の視点が止まった。これはもちろんルネサンス期におけるロックを意味している。

そして私は気づいた。
Hediがこれまで撮り続けてきた白黒の写真は、異なる時代、異なる場所で撮影されたものであっても、被写体それぞれの個性を包含したうえで完璧な統一感があった。まるで、カメラを手にした彼は、異なる時代・場所を横断する特異な次元に立ち、そこで見た対象（若者）を撮影しているかのように。彼がこれまでインキュベートしてきた他者の作品についても同じことがいえた。もちろん個別の写真や作品は、一枚ずつ独立した存在として機能する。しかし、これまで撮影した写真や、彼が愛好する肖像画や写真は、彼の世界では融解し、ひとつに混ざり合い、腑分けできないものになっているのだろう。
そう、彼にしか見えていなかった時間圧縮の世界を表現したものがこのコレクションなのだ。若者を軸にいくつもの時代のファッションが重なる。そのすべてを圧縮した塊から、まるで彫刻のように、いくつもの個性的な若い男性像を掘り起こしていった。それらはどこか懐かしく、それでいて新しかった。一時的であるはずの若さが、永遠を志向していた。

FOR THIS PROJECT WE WERE IN PURSUIT OF SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW. SO WE STRIPPED EVERYTHING RIGHT BACK. LEAVING ALL PREVIOUS MUSIC BEHIND. WANTING NONE OF THE PREVIOUS CODES TO COME WITH US IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING SOMETHING ENTIRELY NEW.

THE NAME ‘THE LOOM’ COMES FROM A SONG BY A BAND CALLED BARK PSYCHOSIS.

ME AND HEDI HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR MANY YEARS.
MY FIRST JOB WAS ASSISTING HIM AT DIOR HOMME IN PARIS.

FOR THIS PROJECT BECAUSE OF COVID WE UNFORTUNATELY WEREN’T ABLE TO BE IN THE STUDIO TOGETHER. SO WE SPOKE ON THE PHONE A LOT, TRADED IMAGES & IDEAS.

ME AND MY TWIN BROTHER JACK BARNETT [THE OTHER HALF OF THESE NEW PURITANS] WORKED TOGETHER BUT INDIVIDUALLY IN OUR HOME STUDIOS, VIA ZOOM. WORKING ON BOTH MUSIC AND LYRICS.

INITIALLY WE MADE SOME SHORT SKETCHES. BASED ON HEDI’S IDEAS OF COMBINING THE TRADITIONAL BRETON MARCHING DRUMS WITH COLD WAVE. THE COLD WAVE BECAME LESS PROMINENT, ORGANICALLY REPLACED BY COLD SUBS.

HEDI HAD A BIG HAND IN THIS PIECE OF MUSIC. CO-PRODUCER IT’S NOT SOME NOMINAL TITLE.

FOR ME PERSONALLY I VERY MUCH LIKE WHERE ‘TIME SLIP’ ENDED UP LYRICALLY.

WHAT WAS YOUR IMPRESSION OF THE CELINE SHOW?
A
THE CLARITY AND CONVICTION OF ‘TEEN KNIGHT POEM’ WAS A TRIP.

THE SHOW FELT PHYSICAL, EVEN THROUGH A COMPUTER SCREEN.
THIS FORMAT ALLOWED US FOR THE FIRST TIME TO SEE WHAT THE ARTIST WANTED US TO SEE.

HEDI HAS SUCH A SINGULAR, CLEAR VISION: THAT FOR ME IN 2021 IS SO VALUABLE & NECESSARY.

AS THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE IS SO BY COMMITTEE, GLOBAL, BEIGE.. & RISK AVERSE.

HEDI’S CONSISTENCY AS A DESIGNER IS ONLY COMPARABLE TO YVES SAINT LAURENT, CHANEL OR AZZEDINE ALAIA.
IT’S TRUTHFUL, CODED, NON-NOVELTY, PURE STUFF. I HAVE BIG RESPECT FOR THAT.

新しいプロジェクトを立ち上げ、その名前をTHE LOOMにしたのはなぜでしょうか？
A
今回のプロジェクトでは、まったく新しいものを追求するために、すべてを削ぎ落とした。これまでの音楽をすべて捨てて、まったく新しいものを作る過程で、これまでのコードを一切持ち込まないことにしたんだ。

THE LOOMという名前は、BARK PSYCHOSISというバンドの曲に由来している。

HEDIはどのようにしてあなたに’TIME SLIP’の制作やアレンジを依頼したのですか？
A
HEDIとは、長年の友人なんだ。
僕の最初の仕事は、パリのDIOR HOMMEで彼のアシスタントをしたことだった。

今回のプロジェクトでは、新型コロナウイルス感染症のために、残念ながら僕らは一緒にスタジオに入ることができなかった。そのため、電話で何度も話し、イメージやアイデアを交換した。

僕と双子の兄弟であるJACK BARNET（THESE NEW PURITANSの相方でもある）とは、それぞれ自宅のスタジオでZOOMを使ってやりとりをしながら、音楽と歌詞の両方に取り組んでいった。

最初は、伝統的なブルトンのマーチング・ドラムとコールドウェーヴを組み合わせるというHEDIのアイデアに基づいて、いくつかの短いスケッチを作った。その後、コールドウェーヴはあまり目立たなくなり、コールドサブに変わっていった。

HEDIはこの音楽に大きな影響を与えた。共同プロデューサーというのは、名ばかりの肩書きではないよ。

僕個人としては、’TIME SLIP’が叙情的に終わったところが、とても気に入っている。

CELINEのショーの印象はどうでしたか？
A
‘TEEN KNIGHT POEM’の明快さと説得力は圧巻だった。

コンピューターの画面を通しても、身体的な感覚があった。
このフォーマットによって、アーティストが我々に見せたい思っているものを初めて見ることができた。

HEDIにはこのような特異で明確なビジョンがある。それは2021年の私にとって、とても貴重で必要なものだ。

僕らの住む世界は、委員会的で、グローバルで、ベージュ色で、リスクを嫌うようになっている。

HEDIのデザイナーとしての一貫性は、YVES SAINT LAURENT、CHANELまたはAZZEDINE ALAIAに匹敵するものだ。
真実味があり、コード化されていて、斬新さがなく、純粋なもの。僕はその点をとても尊敬しているんだ。
