Shitkid is a band of two women based in Stockholm, Sweden. The band was started as a solo project by vocal Åsa three years ago. Åsa was born in 1992 and is from northern Sweden. She debuted in 2016 with ‘Shitkid’ (EP). She tours around Europe, including The Great Escape in the UK. She is also passionate about music production and released ‘EP2 (EP)’, ‘FISH (LP)’ in 2017, and ‘This Is It’ (EP) in 2018. A year and a half ago, Stockholm bassist Lina joined. They released ‘DETENTION’ (LP) in 2019. Then, the song ‘Yooouuu’ included in ‘This is it ‘(EP) attracted attention because it was selected as CELINE WOMEN’S AW 2019-20 CAMPAIGN.

Shitkidは、SwedenのStockholmを拠点に活動する、女性２名からなるバンド。このバンドは、ボーカルのÅsaが3年前にソロプロジェクトとしてスタート。Åsaは1992年生まれ、スウェーデン北部の出身。2016年’Shitkid’（EP）でデビューし、UKのThe Great Escapeをはじめヨーロッパ各地でツアーを行いました。彼女は楽曲制作にも熱心で、2017年に’EP2（EP）’、’FISH（LP）’、2018年に’This Is It’（EP）をリリース。1年半前に、ストックホルムのベーシストのLinaが加入。2019年に’DETENTION’ （LP）を発表しました。また、’This is it（EP）’に含まれる曲’Yooouuu’が、CELINE WOMEN ’S AW 2019-20 CAMPAIGNに抜擢されたことでも注目を集めました。

This time, I will introduce the band Shitkid from Sweden. Throughout the history of the band’s founder Åsa Söderqvist, I approach the charm of the band.

In 1992, Åsa left her parents’ home to learn music. But it’s nominal and she really just wanted to leave home. In fact, she skipped the music class, played with the boys, and had a party. On the contrary, it was still better to go to a math class than to go to a music class. But she likes the music itself and tries to play in the band, but at that time she was badly shy and couldn’t play well in public. Later, by drinking beer before the performance, she overcame her embarrassment and managed to sing on stage.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Gothenburg, southern Sweden. She forms a punk band, but breaks up due to member circumstances. She didn’t like studying music, but she seemed aware of her talent and enthusiasm for music. At the same time she was fed up with the low motivation of other members in the band.

So she chose to work alone. She sought out what kind of sound it should be in the garage band around. First, she recorded on a broken computer the song ‘Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid’ with only vocals and drums. The early composing style was to record a drum machine, add a guitar or synth, and then improvise lyrics and songs. In 2017, she released her debut work ‘Shitkid’ (EP), which attracted attention from indie rock fans. And ‘This is it ‘(EP), which includes songs that Hedi took up in the campaign, was released in 2018. Again, Åsa recorded the performance and production by herself in her bedroom, car, and rehearsal space. Then bassist Lina joined. They released their latest work ‘DETENTION’ (LP) in 2019. In this work, the band invited guitar and drums support members to perform full studio recording for the first time. They took a new step.

Many people know their edgyness through the band’s Instagram. They feature metal-like visuals in the posts and do punk things in the stories. In short, it ’s a hard band.

But is that what makes them so attractive?

Åsa is as it used to be. She is shy and likes grunge and garage rock, as well as pop music (Britney Spears and Pink, Christina Aguilera). And she’s just searching for her own music like no other, just as she started the band alone. In that sense, she is the successor of Julian (The Strokes). Julian was also trying to make his own strange music. The title of ‘This Is It’ (EP) must be a tribute to Julian Casablancas’ ‘Is This It?’, Not Michael Jackson.

Metal-like visuals and hard performances are just sublimated battles against shy ones. The charm of this band is Åsa’s ‘pureness’. It also attracted Hedi, the world’s best rock journalist.

今回はSweden出身のバンドShitkidをご紹介します。同バンドの発起人Åsa Söderqvistの歴史を通して、同バンドの魅力に迫っていきます。

1992年、Åsaは音楽を学ぶために実家を出ました。しかしそれは名目で、本当は彼女はただ実家を出たかっただけだったのです。実際、彼女は音楽の授業をサボって、男の子と遊び、パーティばかりしていました。それどころか音楽の授業に出るくらいなら、数学の授業に出た方がまだマシというほどでした。ただ彼女は音楽自体は好きで、バンドでの演奏を試みもしました。しかし当時の彼女はひどくシャイで、人前でうまく演奏することができなかった。その後、彼女はパフォーマンスの前にビールを飲むことで、なんとか恥ずかしさを克服し、ステージで歌えるようになったとのことです。

高校卒業後、彼女はスウェーデン南部のヨーテボリに移動しました。彼女はパンクバンドを結成しますが、メンバーの事情で解散。彼女は音楽の勉強自体は好きでなかったけれど、自分の音楽に対する才能や熱意についての自覚はあったようです。それとと同時に彼女は、バンドでは他のメンバーのモチベーションの低さにうんざりすることもありました。

そのため彼女は一人で活動することを選びました。彼女は、周囲がガレージバンドをやっている中で、どのようなサウンドにすべきかを模索しました。まず、彼女が壊れたコンピューターに録音したのが、ボーカルとドラムスのみの曲’Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid’。初期の作曲スタイルは、まずドラムマシーンを録音し、ギターまたはシンセを加えてから、歌詞と歌を即興でいれるというものでした。彼女は2017年にはデビュー作 ‘Shitkid’（EP）をリリースし、インディロックファンからの注目を集めました。そして、Hediがキャンペーンに取り上げた楽曲を含む’This is it ‘（EP）は2018年にリリース。こちらもまたÅsaが演奏とプロデュースを彼女自身が寝室や車、リハーサルスペースで独力で録音したものでした。その後、ベーシストのLinaが加入。彼女達は2019年に最新作 ‘DETENTION’（LP）をリリースしました。同作でバンドは、ギターとドラムスのサポートメンバーを招き、初めてフルスタジオレコーディングを実施。彼女達は新しい一歩を踏み出しました。

バンドのInstagramなどを通して、彼女達のエッジィさを知っている方も多いと思います。彼女達は、投稿ではメタルっぽいビジュアルの写真を紹介し、ストーリーではパンクなことをやっています。端的に言って、ハードなバンドですね。

けれど、それこそが彼女達の魅力なのでしょうか？

Åsaは昔のままなのです。彼女はシャイで、グランジとガレージロックが好きで、同様にポップミュージック（ブリトニー・スピアーズとピンク、クリスティーナ・アギレラ）を愛している。そして彼女は、バンドを一人で始めた頃のまま、他のどこにもない自分だけの音楽を探求しているだけなのです。そういった意味では、彼女はThe StrokesのJulianの後継者とも言えます。Julianもまた、彼独自の奇妙な音楽を作ろうとしていました。’This Is It’（EP）のタイトルは、Michael Jacksonではなく、Julian Casablancasの ‘ Is This It?’へのオマージュでしょう。

メタルっぽいビジュアルもハードなパフォーマンスも、シャイな自分との戦いを昇華したものにすぎません。このバンドの魅力はÅsaの’純粋さ’です。それは世界一のロックジャーナリスト、Hediをも引き寄せました。
