♪PROFILE♪

Ryan Turner is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England. Inspired by the free-travelling nature of artists such as Ronnie Lane and Peter Doherty, alongside the works of Bill Ryder Jones and Nick Drake. He is currently working on solo material in lockdown whilst preparing releases for later this year with his new, as yet unnamed post-punk project.

Ryan Turner from the UK modelled for Celine Men’s Summer 2020 Portrait Of A Performer campaign with Tommy Adamson. Ryan’s photos were particularly striking, especially the ones in knee-crush damaged denim. The hole in the knee detail was a suggestion Hedi Slimane had taken from the Rock archives when he was at Saint Laurent Paris. Since then, it has been imitated by many brands and has become a worldwide trend. Then again, by the time this campaign was released, the technique was becoming obsolete. However, with this photo featuring Ryan Turner, Hedi has reinvented damaged denim as a trendy item once again.

The denim features a slightly roomy silhouette, reminiscent of 90’s street and grunge fashion. The lightly faded fabric has a wide tear at the knee (which reminded me of Fear Of God denim). Through the gap, Ryan’s beautiful white knees peek out. For the top, he wore a cardigan in brushed mohair and a feminine bowtie blouse. A sofa with leaf pattern in austere colors is placed in the room, giving the overall look a classic feel. Above all, his introspective look is distinctly different from the street denim style. The texture of the denim and the fraying of the threads looked like a work of art, yet it also symbolized the delicate sensibility of youth.

At Celine, Hedi has been redefining the modern bourgeoisie, focusing on the conservative styles of the 70s and 80s, and Autumn/Winter 2020 Collection was the culmination of his work. After that, he entered the phase of refining the recent luxury for young people: logo hoodies (as represented by Supreme), rare sneakers, and vintage denim. This is what The Dancing Kid is all about. At first glance, the collection seems to be disconnected from the previous ones, but the concept of defining the bourgeoisie is consistent. From this point of view, this campaign featuring Ryan is a bridge between conservative and street fashion. And this exquisite balance is the essence of the style proposed by Hedi.

If you watch Ryan’s song ‘Clean Slate Ry (Demo)’ on YouTube, you can hear the gentle acoustic sound, which is strongly influenced by the UK singer-songwriters he admires, such as Nick Drake. However, I could also sense his frustration behind the calmness. He had wanted to record some solo material in SS2, his local studio, alongside the songs he has been there working on for his other unnamed new project, but lockdown had prevented him from doing so. Still, he had a strong will that he needed to make music as much as he could. So he wrote an acoustic song he could play alone, recorded it at home, and posted it on the internet. Hence it only being a demo.

However, I thought that even in this unfinished state, it was complete. This is because it is a record of the battle between the sense of stagnation of our time and the will of individuals to resist it. It is true that the power of one person may be small and weak. Still, I felt that starting small with what we can do will lead to the future.

デニムは、90年代のストリートやグランジを彷彿とさせる、少しゆとりのあるシルエットが特長。淡く色落ちした生地は、膝の部分が広い範囲で破けている（それはFear Of Godのデニムを彷彿とさせた）。その隙間からはRyanの美しい白い膝が覗いている。トップスには、起毛したモヘアのカーディガンとフェミニンなボウタイブラウスを合わせている。渋い色合いのリーフ柄のソファが配置され、全体的にクラシックな雰囲気が漂う。そして何より彼の内省的な表情が、ストリートのデニムスタイルとは一線を画している。デニムの質感や糸のほつれはまるで工芸品のようでもあり、それでいて繊細な若者の感性をも象徴していた。

HediはCelineにて、現代のブルジョワジーを定義し直しており、これまで70-80年代のコンサバなスタイルを中心に取り上げ、Autumn/Winter 2020はその集大成ともいえるコレクションだった。その後、彼は近年の若者にとってのラグジュアリー、Supremeらに代表されるロゴの入ったフーディや、レアなスニーカー、ヴィンテージのデニムを洗練化させるフェーズへと突入した。それを本格的に扱ったのがThe Dancing Kidでもある。一見、これまでのコレクションと断絶されているように見えるが、ブルジョワジーの再定義というコンセプトでは一貫している。その観点から見れば、Ryanを起用したこのキャンペーンは、コンサバとストリートのファッションの橋渡し的な位置づけでもあろう。そしてこの絶妙なバランスは、Hediの提案するスタイルの真骨頂でもある。

Ryanの楽曲’Clean Slate Ry (Demo)’をYoutubeにて視聴していだたければ、穏やかなアコースティックサウンドと自然を描写した風景から、彼が憧れるNick CaveらThe UKのシンガーソングライターからの影響を色濃く感じられると思う。ただ、その穏やかさの裏にある、彼の焦燥感もまた、私には感じられた。彼は地元にあるスタジオSS2にて、他のまだ無名の新プロジェクトのためにそこで制作していた曲とともに、いくつかのソロの作品をレコーディングをしたいと思っていた。しかし、ロックダウンの影響でそれができなくなってしまった。そこで彼は一人で弾けるアコースティックな曲を作り、自宅で録音してネットにアップした。だから、それはあくまでもデモでしかない。

ただ、私はこの未完成な状態でも、完成していると思った。というのは、今の時代の閉塞感とそれに抗う個人の意思の戦いの記録でもあるからだ。たしかに一人の力は小さく、弱いものかもしれない。それでもまず、自分のできることから小さく始めることが、これからの未来につながっていくのだと感じられた。

この作品のカバーアートは、もともとはなく、Ryanがこのブログで紹介するために作ってくれた。まるでBaby Shambles初期のPeter Dohertyを彷彿とさせるコラージュが素敵だと思いませんか？

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
I remember hearing Carl Barat say once that if you don’t put the truth into a song, what are you going to put into it? And that really resonated with me. If songs were lines in a conversation, the situation would be fine, you know? So it’s just about being able to let your vulnerability out.

Who inspires you?
A
I’ve been stuck inside Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day’ for a while now, so that’s a big one for me at the moment. Nick Drake’s ‘Road’ is another one. Anton Newcombe’s output over the past year on YouTube sort of really gave me a kick, in terms of productivity and consistency. But I’m always looking for that something that ends up triggering a part of my brain, somewhere. Once that happens, and you start opening up, the words seem to flow.

A
He has incredible presence, a joy to work with.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this song?
A
I’m not sure about listeners, but more to myself if anything a sense of acceptance, coming to terms with things – setting the books straight in my head, you know. Trying to not give myself as much of a hard time really. I guess that’s universal. Everyone needs to learn to forgive themselves.

How did you try to make it for that?
A
Being honest with myself mostly. Opening up to my own flaws, and trying to address them on the page. Attempting to fight the storm within. I’m getting there.

A
彼は信じられないほどの存在感があって、一緒に仕事をするのが楽しいよ。

この曲を通してリスナーに一番伝えたいことは何ですか？
A
リスナーにとってはどうかわからないのだけれど、自分自身にとっては、物事と折り合いをつけ、受け入れていくという感じだね。自分の頭の中で本を整理していくような感じで。自分を苦しめないようにしていることでもあって、これは普遍的なことだとも思う。誰もが自分自身を許すことを学ぶ必要があると思うんだ。

そのためにどのようにしてこの曲を作ろうとしましたか？
A
自分に正直になること。自分の欠点に対して心を開き、ページ上でそれらに対処しようとしている。内なる嵐と闘おうとしているんだよ。僕はそこに到達しつつある。
