‘ALGORHYTHMS’
PROFILE
Russell hails from Chingford, London, and is the guitarist for the popular rock band Bloc Party.
He had worked as a unit called Pin Me Down and as a support guitarist for Ash.
In 2018, he started a new band Novacub.
And he released his first solo work ‘Algorhythms’ (EP) in January 2022.
Russellはロンドンにあるチンフォードの出身、人気ロックバンドBloc Partyのギタリストである。
過去にはPin Me Downのユニットとして活動や、Ashのサポートギタリストとしてバンドに参加した経験もある。

INTRODUCTION
Russell’s first solo work was released in the form of an EP. During the lockdown, he wrote the songs at home and emailed them to his close friends, working with them to develop the ideas. Although the album contains only five songs, it is a work rich in individuality, spanning his career and showing his new musicality. As a long time fan of his, I am happy to see the participation of Matt, who is also the former drummer of Bloc Party, and Miliena, who was a unit member of Pin Me Down.
Not only that, but you can also enjoy his chemistry with artists of different musical styles such as Jonas from Mew, the Japanese pop duo Heavenstamp, and the young band Latenight Honeymoon from the U.K.
I introducing exclusive interviews with Russell and the artists he has collaborated with over the three posts. I hope you will enjoy them along with his music.
Russell初のソロ作品がEPのフォーマットでリリースされた。ロックダウンの最中、彼は自宅で楽曲を作り、それをメールで親交のあるミュージシャンに送り、彼らとともにアイディアを膨らませながら完成させた。収録は５曲ながらも彼のキャリアを横断しつつ、新しい音楽性も感じさせる個性豊かな作品に仕上がっている。
Bloc Partyの元ドラマーでもあるMattやPin Me Downでユニットを組んでいたMilienaの参加は、長年の彼のファンとしては嬉しいものだ。
それだけでなく、MewのJonas、日本のポップデュオHeavenstamp、the U.K.の若手のバンドLatenight Honeymoonなど音楽性の異なるアーティスト達と彼のケミストリーが楽しめる。
３回にわたりRussellと彼とコラボレーションしたアーティスト達の独占インタビューを紹介していく。ぜひ音楽とともに楽しんでもらたい。
INTERVIEW WITH RUSSELL LISSACK
Q
Why did you decide to start a solo project?
A
It wasn’t a conscious decision to start this project. I’m always writing songs and usually have hundreds of ideas in progress waiting for an outlet. The song ‘Fallible Fire’ was one that Jonas, Jamie and myself started prior to the pandemic. It felt like a special song but we had struggled to find a suitable outlet for it. Once the lockdowns began I decided the song was too good not to be heard so I resolved to finish it and then the project spiraled from there as I reached out to people to see if they would be interested in collaborating online. I actually find it quite frustrating having so many songs, I wish I could release them all!

What do you want to convey to listeners through your solo works?
A
I hope that people enjoy the opportunity to hear me collaborating with people outside of where my music is traditionally heard. The focus is certainly on melody and energy at an instrumental level but it is interesting for people to reach their own interpretation both musically and lyrically.

How did you create your solo works?
A
Generally I would write an instrumental song with all the parts at home (guitars, drums, synths), then it became a case of bouncing ideas back and forth via email and modifying things as required, be that key, section lengths or melodies. It would have been nice to work with people together but obviously this was difficult in the circumstances. However the benefit of this is everybody had the freedom to work at their own pace, without the time constraints of a studio.

For your fans for a long time, the collaboration with Matt was very moving. How was it to collaborate with him?
A
Of course it was lovely to reunite with Matt after almost 10 years since we last made music together. We always had great chemistry together and despite the fact we couldn’t work on the music in the same room, the process still felt easy and satisfying. It’s great to work with people you completely trust and that is something that carried over to all the collaborations on the EP, I knew with everyone involved they were going to produce something really special. Matt is still one of the most exciting and energetic drummers I’ve ever worked with.
Milena Mépris brings sublime melodies to everything she does and it was wonderful to reunite after our work in the band Pin Me Down.
Jonas from Mew has a truly magical voice, so much so we used the original vocal demo he sent for ‘Fallible Fire’ as it was perfect.
Latenight Honeymoon are an exciting new band with fantastic lyricists and melody writers, I’m hoping to do more with them in the future.
Heavenstamp are both fantastic song writers, I’ve worked with them now on several amazing projects and hope to continue to do so!

なぜ、ソロプロジェクトを始めようと思ったのですか？
A
このプロジェクトを始めることは、意識的に決めたわけではないんだ。僕はいつも曲を書いていて、普段から何百ものアイデアが進行形で出口を待っている。‘Fallible Fire’は、パンデミックの前にJonasとJamieと僕の3人で始めた曲。特別な曲だと感じていたんだけれど、適切な発表の仕方がなかなか思いつかなかった。ロックダウンが始まってから、この曲が聴かれないままでいるのははあまりに惜しいと思い、完成させることを決意した。そして、そこからプロジェクトが広がっていき、オンラインでコラボレーションに興味がある人たちに声をかけていったんだ。曲数が多いのがもどかしくて、全部出したいくらいだね！

ソロ作品を通じて、リスナーに伝えたいことは何ですか？
A
僕の音楽がいつも聴かれる場所以外の人たちとのコラボレーションを聴く機会を楽しんでもらえたらと思う。楽器レベルでは、メロディーとエネルギーにフォーカスしているけれど、音楽的にも歌詞的にも、それぞれの解釈で楽しんでもらえたらと思っているよ。

ソロ作品はどのように制作されたのでしょうか？
A
大体は、自宅でギター、ドラム、シンセといったすべてのパートでインストゥルメンタル曲を作り、メールでアイデアを出し合い、キー、セクションの長さ、メロディなど、必要に応じて修正していった。本当はみんなで一緒にやりたいところなんだけれど、なかなかそういうわけにもいかなくって。けれど、この方法の利点は、スタジオという時間の制約を受けずに、誰もが自分のペースで自由に仕事ができたことだね。

昔からのあなたのファンにとって、Mattとのコラボレーションはとても感動的なものだったと思います。彼とのコラボレーションはいかがでしたか？
A
もちろん、約10年ぶりにMattと再会し、一緒に音楽を作ることができたのは素敵なことだった。僕らはいつだって素晴らしい相性を発揮してきた。そして、同じ部屋で音楽を制作することができないにもかかわらず、そのプロセスは容易で満足のいくものだったよ。
完全に信頼できる人たちと一緒に仕事をするのは素晴らしいことだし、それはEPのすべてのコラボレーションに受け継がれていることで、この人たちなら本当に特別なものを作ってくれると思ったんだ。
Mattは、僕がこれまで一緒に仕事をした中で最もエキサイティングでエネルギッシュなドラマーの一人だ。

INTERVIEW WITH MILENA MÉPRIS
Miliena is an artist and a multi-creator from New York City. In the past, she has worked with Russell as Pin Me Down.

How did you feel about your first collaboration with Russell in a long time?
A
Russell and I have stayed in touch generally over the years and I was excited when he asked me to collaborate on a track during the pandemic. ‘Just A Dream’ came together most fluidly for me in terms of melody and lyrics. I was surprised how easily I could jump back into our musical dynamic and find the hooks and harmonies that we both like. Russell suggested adding the spoken word parts which ended up being a fun addition to the song. Our Pin Me Down project was written and recorded from 2 continents so we are used to working remotely this way. The most challenging thing was actually recording the vocals due to the pandemic. Initially I attempted to track vocals myself at home but was feeling self conscious about disturbing neighbors with multiple takes and I was picking up sirens and urban sounds on mics, but eventually we booked a studio to track vocals in.

A

INTERVIEW WITH SARRY & TOMOYA FROM HEAVENSTAMP
Heavenstamp is a Japanese pop duo. The second track on Russell’s EP features Sally on vocals and lyrics, and Tomoya on composition and chorus.

How was your collaboration with Russell?
A
Since around 2010, Russell has participated in many of our Heavenstamp productions by remixing, co-producing and playing guitar, and we have also spent time together when we both visited the UK and Japan.
In the midst of the unprecedented corona disaster, remote cross-country music making is a wonderful idea, and we are truly happy to be able to participate in the work of my dear friend Russell.

A
2010年頃からリミックスや共同プロデュース、ギターの演奏という形で私たちHeavenstampの作品に何度もラッセルが参加してくれたり、お互いにイギリスや日本を訪れた際はともに過ごしたりと、友情を育んできました。未曾有のコロナ禍にあって、リモートでの国を超えた音楽制作は素晴らしいアイデアですし、大切な友人であるラッセルの作品に参加することができて心から嬉しく思います。
INTERVIEW WITH TED FROM LATENIGHT HONEYMOON
Latenight Honeymoon is a rock band from the U.K. They debuted in 2020 with the single ‘Sunlight’.

How was your collaboration with Russell?
A
Working with Russell has been a dream for me personally. To be honest I was surprised that Russell reached out as I have been such a massive fan of his from a young age. It was pretty surreal… these lyrics…There was a point where I struggled to write about much else… I think this song helped me push past that and allowed me to break free from an uninspired mindset caused by the state of affairs. I’ll always be grateful to Russell for what this song has given me. A reminder that there is a story in every situation no matter how monotonous it may seem… You just have to look hard enough.

A
Russellとの仕事は、僕個人にとって夢のようなものだった。正直、若い頃から彼の大ファンだったので、Russellが声をかけてくれたことに驚いたよ。かなりシュールだったね…。気がついたら、コロナウイルスの検査センターでこの歌詞を書いていたんだ…。他のことを書くのにも苦労していた時期でもあって…。この曲は、それを乗り越える手助けをしてくれたし、やる気のないマインドセットから脱却することができたと思う。この曲が僕に与えてくれたものに対して、いつもRussellに感謝している。どんなに単調に見える状況でも、そこにはストーリーがあるということを思い出させてくれる…。ただ、十分に目を凝らせばいいんだってね。
NTERVIEW WITH JONAS BJERRE FROM MEW
Jonas is the vocalist and guitarist for the popular Danish alternative rock band Mew.

How was your collaboration with Russell?
A
It was so cool to work with Russell again, I had worked with him before, as he joined Mew for a writing session when we were making the ‘+-’ album, and he recorded some guitar for us. I first met him in the US when Mew did a tour supporting Bloc Party many years ago. He is a singular and unique artist, with whom I share many interests, and an incredible guitar player who can make riffs and sculpture sound like no one else. I’m very proud of the song we made, and it’s such a cool idea to spend the lockdown creating something beautiful through collaborations!

A

Matt is the former drummer of Bloc Party. He is currently raising his children, working with the Alegiers and as a solo artist.

How did you feel about your first collaboration with Russell in a long time?
A
I enjoyed working with Russell again, even though it was remotely. I could still feel our chemistry crackling through the wires. We had spent so much time working together in the past that it didn’t really need much communication between us to get the job done. We both had similar expectations for the song and I think that’s because we understand our respective strengths so well.

A
Russellとの仕事は、リモートとはいえ、再び楽しむことができたよ。電線を通して、僕らのケミストリーがパチパチと音を立てているのを感じることができたからね。過去に多くの時間を共に過ごしてきたので、仕事を成し遂げるために、僕らの間で多くのコミュニケーションをとる必要はなかった。曲に対する期待もお互い似ていたし、それぞれの強みをよく理解しているからこそだと思うよ。
