この作品で一番伝えたいことはどんなことですか？
A
僕はリスナーのみんなに、このビデオを通して、僕の音楽が心地よいものだと感じて欲しかったんだと思う。僕の音楽は、楽しみになりえるんだ。だから、僕らはこの曲のために、“楽しい”ビデオを作ろうと思ったんだ。

そのために、どんな点にこだわっていますか？
音楽、歌詞、アートワークの観点から教えてください。
A
この曲の歌詞は、ビデオとは関係がない。ラブソングだよ。でも、僕らは典型的なラブソングのビデオを、本当に作りたくはなかったんだ。

音楽を通じて探求しているテーマは何ですか？
A
大方の曲のテーマは、愛について。でも、それはいつだって変わりえる。 今の僕は、そんなにたくさんのラブソングを書いているわけではないからね。

どんなアーティストに影響を受けましたか？
A
XTC, The Soft Machine, The Move それから The Surf Punks.まさに今、そのバンド達にインスパイアされているよ。彼らが僕を鼓舞してどうさせるのかはわからない。けれど、おそらくもうじき、わかってくるだろうね。
XTC はこの数ヶ月ですごくハマっている。特に、Go 2と Drums and Wiresのアルバムが気に入ってるよ。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this music &video?
A
I think I just wanted the listeners to get a good feel for my music through the video. I think my music can be fun. So we tried to make a “fun” video for the song.

For that, how did you form this song&video?
Please explain with regards to music, lyrics, and artwork.
A
The lyrics of the song are not related to the video. It’s a love song. But we didn’t really want to make a typical love song video.

What is the theme you are looking for through making music?
A
The theme of a lot of my songs is love. But it always changes. I’m not writing so many love songs at the moment.
Q
What artists inspire you?
A
XTC, The Soft Machine, The Move, and The Surf Punks. Right now, those are the bands that have been inspiring me. I don’t know what they’re inspiring me to do, though. I guess I’ll find out soon enough.
XTC has been my absolute favorite the past few months. Especially the album Go 2, Drums and Wires.

TRAPPEDの歌詞は、青年の恋の悩みがテーマ。おそらく付き合って間もないのだろう、彼女が本当に自分を愛してくれているのだろうかと、青年は自信が持てないでいる。そんなナイーブな内容とは裏腹に、ミュージックビデオはユーモアにあふれている。映像は、オレンジカウンティでもっとも古くからあるという、彼の祖母の庭から始まる。ちなみに、Hedi Slimaneはこの家でREXXを撮影した。Hediがインスパイアされたというだけあって、REXXは、イエローの開襟シャツに真っ黒なスキニージーンズに、グリーンのドクターマーチンと今、一番ホットな西海岸のパンクファッションに身を包む。そんな彼が、庭から街へ出て、アヒルのおもちゃを集めるという、奇妙な話だ。
内気さとユーモア、これらの相反する要素をロックというフィルターを通して表現している点が彼のオリジナリティである。彼は家族に愛されて育った、アメコミヒーローが大好きなシャイな青年である。だから、彼はステージに立つときは緊張をやわらげるために、アイメイクをする。スパイダーマンがマスクをするように。変身した彼が歌うのは、日常では言えない“本音”。そう内気で、ロックスターに憧れる僕やあなたが抱えている日常のモヤモヤを、REXXは代弁してくれるのだ。

REXX’s new single TRAPPED is about a boy’s fear of love. He doesn’t want to go steady with the girl he’s seeing, and he worries about that she’s in love with him. In contrast to that serious lyric, this song’s music video is so fun. The film opens in front of REXX’s grandmother’ s house. (Fun Fact Number One: in real life,this house is the oldest one in Orange County. Fun Fact Number Two: legendary fashion photographer Hedi Slimane shot photos of REXX in this house.)
REXX plays our lead character, clad in black skinny jeans, a yellow open-necked shirt and green Doc Martens. (Side Note: REXX has serious West Coast style – and his original look is inspired by expressing both fearful and fun emotions through a rock aesthetic.)
In the video,REXX walks from his garden into town in search of duck toys, plain and simple. There is no reference to his girlfriend or his relationship troubles. This is not a love story, but plain old fun.
REXX seems to have grown up loved by his family, reading superhero comics, and listening to a lot of music. He’s just an ordinary boy. He paints his face before getting onstage to hide any feelings of nervousness. It’s just like when Peter Parker puts on his Spider-Man mask. Through his transformation, we can see the intensity behind his music. He can express the feelings that he doesn’t reveal in his day-to-day life. While you and I are in the crowd reflecting on our own fears, REXX is screaming about his onstage.
