‘MEMORY FOREVER’
PROFILE
Rentboy is the solo project of Philadelphia-based artist Bobby Brown, a suburban native of Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, USA. His family raised chickens and was surrounded by forests and cornfields. After the chickens were captured by foxes and hawks, he took over the barn where they lived and began recording music. His first album ‘Memory Forever’ has just been released on November, 2022.
Rentboyはフィラデルフィア在住のアーティストBobby Brownによるソロプロジェクト。Bobbyはアメリカ合衆国のメリーランド州にある最大の都市ボルチモアの郊外出身。彼の家族はニワトリを育て、付近は森とトウモロコシ畑に囲まれていたという。ニワトリがキツネやタカに捕まっていなくなってしまった後、ニワトリが住んでいた納屋を譲り受け、音楽のレコーディングを始めた。2022年11月にはファーストアルバム’Memory Forever’をリリースしたばかり。

Q
Would you tell us how your solo project got the name ‘Rentboy’?
A
I was 19 years old and I wanted to start a gay punk band so figured it would fit as a name. Sometimes I get really nervous telling straight people about my project but I think it’s been a healthy feeling for me to fight against.
Q
Which artists and bands have influenced your sound?
A
I wrote Memory Forever during the first year of quarantine and was listening to a lot of the early Chicago House that came out on Trax Records. I also got really into the album ‘Kaputt’ by Destroyer to the point I could probably recite the lyrics front to back on command. Right now there’s this album I’m obsessed with called ‘Missa Luba’. It’s a setting of the Traditional Catholic Mass for a Congolese Children’s Choir that was recorded in 1958. Religious vocal music is punk rock.

ソロプロジェクト’Rentboy’の名前の由来を教えてください。
A
19歳の時にゲイパンクバンドを始めたかった時、名前としてぴったりだと思ったんだ。時々、自分のプロジェクトについてストレートの人に話すのがすごく緊張するんだけど、それは自分にとって健全な闘争心だったと思う。

A
Memory Foreverを書いたのは隔離された最初の年で、トラックス・レコードから発売された初期のシカゴ・ハウスをたくさん聴いていた。また、Destroyerの’Kaputt’というアルバムにはまっていて、頼まれたらおそらく歌詞を前から後ろまで暗唱できるくらい。今は’Missa Luba’というアルバムにハマっている。1958年にコンゴの子供合唱団のために録音された、伝統的なカソリックのミサ曲。宗教的な声楽はパンク・ロックだよ。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through the new album?
A
House music is American music.

How did you make the songs for that?
A
I worked on the arrangements on my computer every day for six months then enlisted Danny and Johanna to engineer and help produce the tracks. Overall it took a year and a half to arrange, record, mix and master. It was completely draining at times but now is the first time I’m totally happy with a record I’ve made and I think it will be able to live its own life.

A
半年間、毎日パソコンで編曲をし、DannyとJohannaにエンジニアとプロデュースを依頼した。アレンジ、録音、ミキシング、マスタリングに1年半かかったよ。疲れることもあったけど、初めて自分の作ったレコードに満足したし、これからの人生を生きていけると思う。
