THE GARDENの双子の一人、FletcherのソロプロジェクトPUZZLEを紹介する。その名前のとおり、PUZZLEを理解するのは難しい。曲のよさはすぐにわかる、でも彼がどんなスタイルを持っているのか、何を表現したいのかを理解するのは困難である。音楽やミュージックビデオは、エレクトロニックやビデオゲーム、幽遊白書などのアニメの影響は認められる。しかし、いずれとも明らかな距離がある。口紅を塗ったフェミニンなファッション、音楽というよりもビデオゲームのようなアルバムのアートワークにしても同じだ。90年代のカルチャーの影響を感じさせながらも、誰とも似ていない。彼を説明するためのピースは揃うのだが、パズルは完成しないのだ。
それこそが、彼の魅力である。LAのロックシーンのアーティストで、孤高の地位を築いた理由である。彼の曲やスタイルは、心の深い井戸の底から汲み上げられたものだ。彼は影響を受けたいろいろなピースを、ボコボコと心の井戸に放り投げる。やがて井戸の中で、ピースはドロドロに溶ける。彼はそれを汲み上げて、そのまま僕らに差し出す。分析も統合もない、方向づけもない、ありのままのカオスである。そう彼は、村上春樹のように、潜在意識の深い闇に勇気を持って飛び込み、僕らが見たことのない心象風景を見せてくれる。あるいはそのスタイルは、パンクと呼べるのかもしれない。
新曲は、これからリリースされるアルバムへの招待状である。今まで以上に、濃度が増した彼の心の闇を覗くことができる。
This time I’d like to introduce Puzzle, a solo project of Fletcher Shears, one of the twins behind The Garden. As you’d expect, given the name, understanding Puzzle isn’t easy.
Although one can immediately grasp the merits of his music, what style it is meant to be and what it is supposed to represent is something altogether more challenging. Puzzle’s music and videos both draw inspiration from animated series, such as YuYu Hakusho. There’s more to it than just that, however.
Indeed, Puzzle’s style and album art ranges from Fletcher in feminine fashion with lips painted pink, to art that might seem like it’s for a video game rather than for a music release.
And while you can feel the influence of 90’s culture, there’s no one in particular you can say Puzzle resembles. Even with all of those pieces assembled, we still cannot say that this Puzzle is complete. All of this is what makes him so fascinating.
Puzzle has grown apart from other artists in the LA rock scene. His music and style are drawn from the absolute bottom of his heart. It is into that pounding heart that he casts his various influences. Before long, in those depths, the pieces begin to coalesce. And it is that muddled mass in his heart that he is drawing out, simply as it is, to present to us as Puzzle. There is no analysis, no unification, no alignment – the fact is that there is just chaos. So, like Haruki Murakami, he has the courage to plunge into the deep darkness of the subconscious and show us imagined scenes the likes of which we have never seen. You might even call this style punk, in a way.
This new song has been released in anticipation of Puzzle’s next release, though it isn’t actually from the new album. More than ever before, we’re able to glimpse the darkness of his heart.

A
本当に正直にいうと、この曲を出そうとは思ってなかった。ただ新しいアルバムにあまりに時間がかかっているという理由で、リリースを決めたんだ。

そのために、どんな点にこだわっていますか？
A
うーん。僕はこの曲を数ヶ月前に作って、だから言うのは難しいんだ。もともとは誰かに歌ってもらいたかった。でも、全然合わなくて。だから、僕が前にもいったように、この曲はもともとガラクタの山の中にあって。さっと復元させたものなんだよ。

音楽を通じて探求しているテーマは何ですか？
A
んん。テーマというのを避けるように心がけている。僕の音楽は、僕自身からストレートに、間に何も挟むことなく、あることがいいんだ。それこそが僕のゴールだよ。

なぜソロプロジェクトのためにパズルという言葉を選びましたか？
A
うーん。高校時代、パズルという名前を選んだ。ただ音の響きが気に入っただけで。でも今では、僕にとってかなり筋が通っていると思うよ。

どんなアーティストや曲に影響を受けましたか？
A
ビデオゲームのための音楽を作るコンポーザーには本当にインスパイアされる。（ゲームの）首領蜂のための音楽は、特に影響を与えた。僕はいろんな種類の音楽が好きで。ただビデオゲームのコンポーザー達はとても特別でユニークなんだと思う。（もちろん）僕はたくさんビデオゲーム以外のエレクトロニックミュージックも聞くよ。

あなた自身のファッションのテーマを教えてください。
A
んーー。時々、僕が（特定のスタイルを）しているよう見えるかもしれない。でも、本当にテーマはなくて。ただ着たいと思ったものを着るだけ、というか正直いってそれすらそんなに考えてるわけでもない。僕が本当にスタイルを持っているのかすらわからないよ。あらゆる場所に、あらゆるスタイルがあるとすら感じているよ。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this new song?
A
To be perfectly honest, I had no intentions on putting this song out. I decided to release it because I have been taking so long new album.

For that, how did you form this song ?
Please explain with regards to music, lyrics, art and movie.
A
Mmm, I made this song a few months ago, so it’s hard to say. I originally wanted someone else to sing on it, but it didn’t quite fit. So, as I said before, this song was basically in the junk pile. It was soon resurrected though.
Q
What is the theme you are looking for through making music?
A
Mm, something I think I try to avoid is a theme. I like my music to just be straight from me, with nothing in between. That’s always my goal.

Why did you choice the words of puzzle for your own solo project?
A
Mmm, I chose the name Puzzle when I was in High School. I just liked how it sounded to me, but now It kind of makes sense for me.

What artists inspire you?
A
The composers who create music for video games really inspire me.The music for DonPachi really inspires me.I like all kinds of music, I just think video game composers can be very special and unique. I also listen to a lot of other electronic that doesn’t involve video games.

What is the theme of your fashion style which inspire Hedi Slimane?
For that, how did you form your style ?
A
Mmmm.. It may seem like I do at times, but I don’t really have a theme, I just wear what I feel like wearing, I honestly don’t think too hard about it. Not sure I really have a style.. it feels kind of all over the place…
