♪PROFILE♪

Pappoz is a duo of Ulysse and Armand from Paris, France. They debuted in 2015 with a self-titled ep. And 2nd album ‘Night Sketches’ was released in January 2019, single ‘Figs & Gorgonzola’ was released in February 2020.
Their fashion is also attractive. They are friends with Hedi Slimane. They also attracted attention because their style influenced Celine Men’s Spring/Summer 2020 Collection.

When I first heard ‘Figs & Gorgonzola’ , I thought it was not a song of Papooz, but another band. In this song, the floating feeling of their feature ‘Dream Pop’ lurks in shadows. Instead of that , we can feel momentum and tenderness like 70s sound.

Armand says this change is what they consciously created. Papooz is the driving force behind the current Paris rock scene, both in name and in reality. But, they were hitting the wall of writing. Oneday, Armand realized that when he pretended to be another person, he could create unexpected songs. Then he made a song of Ullysse’s mother. That is this song. Not only that, the band members played different parts in the recording, freeing each player from the habit and regaining a fresh sound.

The lyrics are also attractive. Two former lovers now live together. Conflicts and joys in their lives are spoken in concrete words. From this lyrics, you can feel the desire for the other person, the passing of feelings, and the loving the other person. Yes, the history of a couple is condensed in this short song. It’s too mediocre, it might not be news. It is a scene of everyday life. However, one of the most important concepts in life, ‘kindness to others’, shines brightly there. And that may be what we need now.

As you know, Corona Virus infections are killing people. But that’s not all. People’s hearts are raging from the stress created by the symptoms of disease, financial distress, and concerns about supplies. In the world, there are attacks on others, monopolies of daily necessities, selfish outings, and violence at home is frequent now.

That’s when we should remember ‘Figs & Gorgonzola’. In extraordinary everyday life, we should value the time spent with important people as consciously as possible. First of all, if you calm down and think, sooner or later everyone is destined to die. As Drucker once said that we can’t save time and what we can do is to use our time effectively.

It is up to you to decide whether to use your limited time effectively. First off, turn off your computer and put your smartphone in your desk drawer. Then get the paper, hold the pen and write what you really want to value. In this list, you will find ‘Figs & Gorgonzola’ just for you. ‘Figs & Gorgonzola’（イチジクとゴルゴンゾーラ)を私が初めて聴いた時、Papoozの曲ではなく、他のバンドなのかとうほど驚いた。それほどまでに、この新曲はこれまでのPapoozと異なるサウンドである。彼らの特徴でもあったドリープポップの浮遊感は影を潜め、代わりに、70年代風の勢いと優しさを感じさせる。

Armand（アルマン）は、この変化は彼らが意識的に作りだしたものだと言う。Papoozは、名実ともに現在のパリのロックシーンを牽引する存在だ。しかしその裏で、彼ら自身は作曲の壁に当たっていた。そんな時、Armandは他の人のふりをして作曲すると、思いがけない曲ができることに気づいた。そこで早速、相方のUlysse（ユリス）の母親になりきって作られたのがこの曲なのだ。それだけでなく、レコーディングにおいて、バンドのメンバーがこれまでと異なるパートを演奏することで、プレイヤー一人一人がクセから解放され、新鮮なサウンドを取り戻した。

歌詞もまた魅力的である。かつて恋人だった二人が、今ではともに一緒に暮らす様子が描かれています。彼らの生活における葛藤や喜びが具体的な言葉で語られている。それらのフレーズから、相手を求める気持ち、気持ちのすれ違い、それでも相手を愛する気持ちが感じられる。そう、この短い曲の中に一組のパートナーの歴史が凝縮されているのだ。それはあまりにも凡庸なものであり、ニュースにはならないもの、つまり日常の風景かもしれない。しかし、そこには人生における最も大切な概念のひとつ、’他者への優しさ’がキラリと輝いている。そしてそれは今こそ、我々にとって必要なものかもしれない。

そんな時こそ、私達は’Figs & Gorgonzola’（イチジクとゴルゴンゾーラ)を思い出すべきなのかもしれない。非日常となった日常において、できるだけ意識的に、日々の喜びに、大切な人との過ごす時間を大切にするのだ。そもそも、落ち着いて考えてみると、遅かれ早かれ全ての人が死ぬゆく運命なのだ。かつてDruckerが言ったように、時間を節約することは我々にはできない。できるのは、どれだけ時間を有効に使えるかどうかということなのだ。

際限のあるあなたの時間を、有効に使うかどうかを決めるのはあなた自身だ。まずは、パソコンの電源を切り、スマートフォンを机の引き出しに入れよう。そして、紙を用意し、ペンを持って、あなたが本当に大切にしたいと思うことを書くのだ。そう、あなたただけの’Figs & Gorgonzola’を発見するのだ。そして日々、そのリストとあなたの実際の生活を照らし合わせることで、自分の時間や人生を無駄にしていないかを確認することができるのである。

♪INTERVIEW WITH ARMAND PENICAUT♪

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this ?
A
Feeling of tenderness.
I wrote this song a year ago. I was experiencing writer’s block and I was thinking about new songwriting techniques to overcome that issue. I found out that I could put myself easily in my friends shoes. So I pretended to be our cellist Gabriel Mimouni and wrote a song about him in 10 minutes (I’d rather be the moon/Unreleased yet). It was one of those moments badly portrayed in Hollywood films, like Joachim Phoenix when he sings “ I hear the train coming” in ‘Walk the Line’.
I used the same technique thinking about Ulysse’s mother. She always cooks figs & gorgonzola in the summer. I thought it was a nice metaphor for love. It’s a song about how time can often be a killer when it comes to relationships.

How did you try to make this song for that?
A
We went down south to our drummer’s studio (La Ferme Records) to rehearse a couple of new tracks before going to America. We cut this one in two or three takes. That was a cool moment because everyone swapped roles during the recording of this song. Our bassist plays the drums, our cellist plays bass, Ulysse plays the piano and our drummer bangs on the bongos. Everything was recorded live and kinda dry. We then sent the rough mix to Ash Workman (Christine & The Queens, Metronomy etc..) who mixed our first LP. For the cover, I wanted a pretty literal thing. Like the Van Gogh’s painting of his shoes. I asked my girlfriend Victoria Lafaurie to draw a still life of Figs & Gorgonzola.

What inspire you in these days?
A
Lotta stuff. The news mostly. They are so many things going’ wrong with the world, it’s a marvel for a writer!
Last album who really blew my mind was the last Angel Olsen record.

この曲は1年前に書いたものなんだ。当時、僕は作曲家としての壁を感じていて、その問題を克服するために新しい作曲方法について考えていた。そんな時、友達の立場になってみることで、それが簡単に解決できるって気づいたんだ。それで早速、僕らのチェリスト’Gabriel Mimouni(ガブリエル・ミモウニ）’であるふりをして、10分で彼についての歌を書いてみた（彼というよりむしろ月になたぐらいかな。曲はまだ発表していないんだけれどね）。その曲はまるで、Joaquin Phoenix（ホアキン・フェニックス）が’ウォークザライン／君に続く道’で”電車が来るのを聞いて・・・”と歌う時のような、ハリウッド映画のひどい描写のようだったよ。
それから、メンバーのUlysse（ユリス）の母親についても、同じテクニックを使ってみた。彼女になりきってみたんだよ。 彼女はいつも夏にイチジクとゴルゴンゾーラ（figs & gorgonzola）を料理しているんだけど。それって愛のいい比喩だと思ったんだよね。この曲は、人間関係に関して’時間’が驚くほどに素晴らしいことができるかについての歌なんだ。

どのようにこの曲を作ろうとしたんですか？
A
アメリカツアーに行く前に、南に下って僕らのドラマーのスタジオLa Ferme Recordsに行き、いくつかの新しいトラックのリハーサルをしたんだ。これを2つまたは3つのテイクにカットした。それでね、この曲のレコーディング中に全員がパートを入れ替えてみたんだよ、それはクールな瞬間だったね。ベーシストはドラムを、チェリストはベースを、Ulysseはピアノを演奏し、そしてドラマーはボンゴを叩いたんだ。すべてがライヴで録音され、ちょっとドライな感じもする。その後、ラフミックスをAsh Workman（僕らの最初の最初のLPやChristine ＆ QueensやMetronomyなどを手がける）に共有して、ミックスしてもらったんだ。シングルのカバーには、タイトル通りのものが欲しかった。まるでゴッホの靴の絵のような感じでね。それで、ガールフレンドである、Victoria Lafaurie（ビクトリア・ラフォーリー）にイチジクとゴルゴンゾーラの静物画を描くように頼んだんだ。

A
たくさんあるけど。ほとんどがニュースだね。世界中のいろんなことがひどい方向に進んでいるし、それは作曲家にとっても脅威でもある！
あと心の底から良いと思った最新のアルバムは、一番新しいAngel Olsenレコードかな。
