♪PROFILE♪
Murder by Television is a rock band based in London, formed in 2021. Members Dermot (vocal/bass), Harry (guitar), and Ryan (guitar) met while working for Celine, and started working together as a band with Jacob (drums). Dermot is an artist who also works as a jewelry designer and illustrator. He designs the flyers for their gigs.
Murder by Televisionは2021年に結成された、ロンドンを拠点に活動するロックバンド。メンバーのDermot(vocal/bass)、Harry(guitar)、Ryan(guitar)は、Celineの仕事で出会い、Jacob(drums)を迎えて、バンドとしての活動をスタートした。Dermotはジュエリーデザイナーやイラストレーターとしても活動するアーティスト。ライヴのフライヤーのデザインも彼が手掛けている。

Izzy is a photographer and painter and model living in London. The cover art for Harry’s solo project Baby Snakes features paintings by Izzy. Recently, she participated in Celine Women’s Spring 2022 Collection, which attracted a lot of attention.

INTERVIEW WITH IZZY HAWKEN
Q
How was this gig filmed?
A
My most trusty camera is colloquially just a point and shoot, Canon Prima BF-80. I purchased it second-hand because I liked the animal sticker that the previous owner had stuck on the front, uncaring of its specs. Interestingly enough for this past gig, Harry and I had purchased expired E6 35mm film from a thrift store that necessitated daylight shooting, but I took a risk.
When developing it, we were warned the shots would turn out a strange green colour because of having ignored all of these presets. Irrespective, they turned out perfectly. Other cameras I own and trial I bought from an antiques auction include a Kodak 600 and Olympus OM1, but I’m yet to break my habit of using the Canon. I perhaps would like to try a digital SLR soon, but I’m a creature of habit and that seems a bit too professional for what I deem recreational.

What are some of the things you focus on when shooting a gig?
A
In honesty, shooting dynamics are different to general still life. Every movement is amplified, adrenal and transient so you really only have a small window to go for it. I love big movement, as it creates interesting, abstract frames as an outcome if caught at the pinnacle moment.
I think the most important thing is denoting the essence of the audience’s energy and how that impacts the band, as in music shots there are commonly shots of the band and not the audience. I think it’s important to somehow fuse the two, as there is a symbiotic relationship between act and audience – the whole premise of live entertainment. I wouldn’t however say, I plan what to focus on, it’s definitely more arbitrary and thus experimental.

Who is your favourite photographer?
A
There are a multiplicity, yet those who I’ve always piqued my interest most are (but not limited to) Slim Aarons, Jenny Lens, Linda McCartney, Mick Rock, Hedi Slimane of course, and Bill Cunningham.

今回のライヴはどのように撮影されたのですか？
A
私が最も信頼しているカメラは、Canon Prima BF-80という、俗に言うポイント＆シュート（全自動カメラ）。スペックは気にせず、前の持ち主が前面に貼っていた動物のシールが気に入って中古で購入したの。このライヴのためにHarryと私は、古着屋で期限切れのE6 35mmフィルムを購入していて。本当は自然光での撮影が必要なフィルムだったけれど、リスクを冒して撮影に臨んだの。
現像の際には、フィルムの特性を無視して撮影したから、変な緑色になるって警告されたわ。けれど、結果は完璧だった。他に持っているカメラやアンティークオークションで買った試供品には、コダック600やオリンパスOM1があるけれど、まだキヤノンを使うクセが抜けない。近々、デジタル一眼レフを試してみたいと思っているけれど、私は習慣の生き物で、自分が娯楽と考えるものにとって、それは少しプロフェッショナルすぎるように思えるのよね。

ライヴの撮影で重視していることは何ですか？
A
正直なところ、動的なシーンの撮影は一般の静物画とは異なるもの。すべての動きが増幅され、アドレナリンが出て、一過性のものになる。そして、その瞬間を捉えることができるのは、カメラの小さな窓しかない。私は大きな動きが好きで、最高の瞬間を撮ることができれば、結果として抽象的で面白いフレームができるのよ。
音楽の撮影では、バンドが写っていて観客が写っていないことが多いので、観客のエネルギーの本質を描き、それがバンドにどう影響を与えるかが最も重要なことだと考えている。ライヴ・エンターテイメントの前提である、演奏と観客の共生という観点から、両者をうまく融合させることが重要だと思う。とはいえ、何を撮るかということは考えていなくて、あくまで実験的にということね。

好きな写真家は誰ですか？
A
いろいろな人がいるわ。私が最も興味を持ったのは、次の人たちね。（ただし、この人達に限るものではないけれど）
Slim Aarons、Jenny Lens、Linda McCartney、 Mick Rock、Hedi Slimaneはもちろんのこと、Bill Cunninghamも好きね。
