FIRST GIG
♪INTRODUCTION♪
Murder by Television is a new rock band based in London, formed in 2021. Members Dermot (vocal/bass), Harry (guitar), and Ryan (guitar) met while working for Celine, and started working together as a band with Jacob (drums). Dermot is an artistic person who also works as a jewelry designer and illustrator. He also designed the flyer for their first gig. Harry is also a member of The Goddams and has already proven himself as an excellent composer. While Ryan has been releasing demos as a singer-songwriter. In other words they are one of the most expected band to be active in the future. On August 13, the band played their first gig in London. They are currently preparing for the release of their next works.
Murder by Televisionは2021年に結成された、ロンドンを拠点に活動する新しいロックバンド。メンバーのDermot(vocal/bass)、Harry（guitar）、Ryan(guitar)は、Celineの仕事で出会い、Jacob(drums)を迎えて、バンドとしての活動をスタートした。Dermotはジュエリーデザイナーやイラストレーターとしても活動する芸術肌。初ライヴのフライヤーのデザインも彼が手掛けた。Harryは、The Goddamsのメンバーでもあり、すでに優秀なコンポーザーとして実績を残している。Ryanはこれまで、シンガーソングライターとしてデモ作品を発表し、今後の活動が期待されていた。つまり、今もっとも期待されるバンドのひとつということだ。8月13日にはバンドとして初めてのライヴがロンドンにて敢行。現在は今後の作品のリリースに向けて準備を行っている。

Would you tell us how the band was formed?
A
We met in Paris in 2020 whilst we were casting for Celine, and Dermot and I then shared a room together for the lead up to the show where we reconvened with Ryan. We chatted a bunch about music, but we all had our own musical endeavours at the time so never thought to create something.
After the 3rd lockdown here we got chatting and thought we’d have a jam together with our drummer Jacob who we got put onto by our friend Jamie from Gingerella, and thus the band was formed!

Would you tell us the origin of the band’s name?
A
The name Murder by Television is pulled from a 30s movie with the same title, however we abbreviate it to ‘MTV’ as a nod to our favourite cable channel, for its services to the music industry.

What kind of band and sound do you aim to create?
A
We have a really great fusion of musical interests in the band which gives us a blend of genres which we produce. Dermot and I are massive fans of Frank Zappa and he heavily inspired us for our opening song on our setlist, Dermot sung to a very Zappa-esque melodic line. Essentially we want to be free of genre -So we’re not limited to one sound, it’s very easy to be confined to a genre once it’s been given to you. At the moment our sound is a mix of Funk, Post Punk, and Jazz. At the moment we’re listening to a bit of everything, from Grant Green to The Libertines, Khruangbin to Leona Lewis.

Would you tell us about the band’s future plan?
A
For the past couple of months we’ve been mainly focused on our gig at the Sebright Arms, accompanied by October and The Eyes, alongside Francis Wolfe. Now that’s done and dusted we want to try and get in the studio and record some demos, hopefully having some music out later in the year.

バンド結成の経緯を教えてください。
A
僕らは2020年に、パリでCelineのキャスティングをしているときに出会ったんだ。その後、Dermotと僕は、Ryanと再会したショーまでの間、同じ部屋で過ごした。音楽の話をたくさんしたけれど、当時はみんなそれぞれに音楽活動をしていたので、何かを作ろうとは思わなかった。ただ、3回目のロックダウンの後、話をしている内に、Gingerellaの友達Jamieが紹介してくれた、ドラマーのJacobと一緒にジャムをしようということになって、バンドが結成されたんだ。

バンド名の由来を教えてください。
A
Murder by Televisionというバンド名は、30年代の同名の映画から取ったもの。けれど、音楽業界に貢献しているお気に入りのケーブルチャンネルにちなんで’MTV’と略しているよ。

どのようなバンド、サウンドを目指していますか？
A
僕らのバンドでは、音楽的な興味がとてもよく融合しているので、様々なジャンルが融合した作品を作ることができる。Dermotと僕はFrank Zappaの大ファンで、セットリストのオープニング曲は、Zappaにインスパイアされて作ったんだけど、DermotはかなりZappa的なメロディラインに合わせて歌ってくれたよ。それから基本的に、ジャンルにとらわれないでいたいと思っている。つまり、ひとつのサウンドにとらわれないということだね。今のところサウンドは、ファンク、ポストパンク、ジャズのミックス。今だと、Grant GreenからThe Libertines、KhruangbinからLeona Lewisまで、あらゆるものを少しずつ聴いているよ。

バンドの今後の計画について教えてください。
A
この2ヶ月間は、Sebright Armsで行われたOctober and The EyesとFrancis Wolfeとのライブに集中していた。それが終わった今は、スタジオに入ってデモを録音し、今年の後半には音楽をリリースしたいと思っている。それまでの間は、リハーサルスタジオに戻るんだ。というのも、僕らの曲作りの大部分は、たいていDermotが主導するフリージャムから生まれているからね。また、デモと一緒にリリースするビジュアルも計画していて、過去に一緒に仕事をしたことがある才能豊かなWilliam Alan Harrisと話をしているところだよ。
