Margo Guryan is a singer-songwriter born on September 30, 1937 in New York City, United States. She released the critically acclaimed album ‘Take A Picture’ in 1968. After the release of this album she became a composer and producer.

I would like to introduce Margo Guryan, a legendary singer-songwriter from New York.

She was born and raised in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York on September 20, 1937. Both of her parents were pianists, and Margo wrote poetry at an early age and began composing soon after she began playing the piano. She may be the most talented one in her family.

Then she studied classical and jazz at Boston University. Her idols at the time were drummer, Max Roach and pianist. Bill Evans. She steered away from public performances and shifted to composing. She was also a label favorite as a lyricist since high school, and already in college she was writing lyrics for jazz singers and others. She expanded her career to include the jazz scene, and her first marriage was to valve trombonist, Bob Brookmeyer.

She was later influenced by The Beach Boys’ s ‘God Only Knows’ and composed ‘Think Of Rain’ which was included on ‘Take A Picture’. Her interests, then, shifted from jazz to pop music. At the time, she had this to say about ‘God Only Knows’: “I thought it was just gorgeous. I bought the record and played it a million times, then sat down and wrote ‘Think of Rain’. That’s really how I started writing I just decided it was better than what was happening in jazz.” While working as a label secretary, she began to develop her songwriting career in earnest. It was during this time that she met her future producer and next husband, David Rosner.

As a culmination of her pop compositions, she signed to Bell Records to record ‘Take A Picture’. The result was a jazz-influenced, melodic pop album produced by John Hill and John Simon ‘Don’t Go Away’. But then, after its release, she decided she didn’t want to tour to promote the album. . The reason was she didn’t like performing and didn’t want to take instruction from agents and managers as to what she should look like and what she should wear. In response, the label stopped promoting the album, failed to make much of an impact sales-wise at the time. She began to produce and give piano lessons and continued to write songs. In 2007,she released a single, ’16 Words’. Then in 2009 a piano piece, ‘The Chopsticks Variations’ was published.
Her only studio album, ‘Take A Picture’, continues to influence many people because of the quality of her work. It was particularly well-loved in Japan where it was reissued.

As I got to know Margo, what I found most interesting was not only what she did, but what she didn’t do. : She avoided performing and turned to songwriting as a college student, made a record of ‘Take A Picture’ but didn’t play a concert, and since then she’s never performed as a singer-songwriter.

I think the reason is this: Record companies had already been interested in her since high school, and when she had a trial recording session, her debut fizzled out because of a bottleneck in her voice. Since this had happened, she may have had low self-esteem because of her voice.

We can speculate that her consistent avoidance of performance was due to a ‘lack of confidence in her ability to sing’. She was so well versed in the music that she may have felt she couldn’t live up to the high standard of vocal performance she was seeking.
The reason for there was never any tour may be anxiety: “Wouldn’t I be disappointing my audience by singing in concert?” more than frustration with the people around her.

But regardless of her struggles, the brilliance of this work, especially her whispering voice, still strikes us as a wonder. The unique psychedelic feel of combining the essence of jazz with the pop music of the time and the production of the vocals layered on top of each other could have been effective. The arrangement of the song ‘Love’, for example, has an appealing feel to it, like pop version of The Velvet Underground. However, it’s not enough to make it a memorable album; it’s clearly her voice that is the heart of the album. Her voice, especially in ‘Someone I know’, has a warmth and gentleness that cannot be replaced by any other vocalist. It’s a different voice, a voice that is different from the average good singer, and when the timing is right, it opens up a whole new world of music. So when I heard her voice for the first time, it didn’t feel strange at all, and it’s a symbol that her voice, which was atypical for her time, has become a standard.Strangely enough, this was something that fellow New York native Julian Casablancas would later achieve.

Almost forty years after ‘Take A Picture’ came out later, ’16 Words’ was released since 1st album released. Of course in this song, her voice has had changed. I’m thinking of a time gone by when her voice should have been recorded more. Still, ‘Take A Picture’ is an album that captures the atmosphere of the late 1960s but has an inherent worldview, and sounds fresh now, like a time capsule that has remained the same throughout the flowing years. In this sense, they are truly snapshots of an era, and while they are moments, they are also complete in terms of time, in other words, eternity. We will continue to access this dimension and spend a moment of bliss in the future. And some of us will make use of the experience to make our own art. Yes, just like Margo learned from The Beach Boys.

彼女は1937年9月20日、ニューヨークのクイーンズ地区ファーロッカーウェーで生まれ、育った。彼女の両親はともにピアノを演奏していた。Margoは幼少から詩を書き、ピアノを始めてからはすぐに作曲をスタートした。音楽一家の中でも彼女の才能は特に優れていたのだろう。

私がMargoを知るにつれ、一番興味深く思ったことは、彼女のやったことだけでなく、やらなかったこと。つまり、大学生の頃にパフォーマンスを避け作曲に転向したこと、’Take A Picture’のレコードを制作したのにコンサートをやらなかったこと、それからそれ以降ほとんどシンガーソングライターとして表舞台に立つことが全くなかったこと、である。

その理由について推測する。高校時代から早くも複数のレコード会社から目をかけられ、お試しのレコーディングセッションをしたところ彼女の声がネックとなりデビューがたち消えになったこと。それがきっかけで、彼女の歌声に対しての自己評価の低くなってしまってはないのかということだ。

つまり、彼女が一貫してパフォーマンスを避けていた理由は’歌うことへの自信のなさだった’のだろうと推測できるのだ。彼女は音楽に精通しているため、彼女が求める高い水準のヴォーカルに、自分が応えることができないと感じたのではないだろうか。ツアーを止めたことも周囲への不満よりも、”私がコンサートで歌うことで聴衆をがっかりさせてしまうのではないか？”という不安の方が大きかったのではないかと私は思う。

しかしそのような彼女の葛藤とは関係なく、この作品の素晴らしさ、特に彼女のささやくような歌声は今なお私たちの心を打つ。ジャズのエッセンスと当時のポップミュージックが融合した独特のサイケ感や、ボーカルを重ねたプロダクションは効果的だったかもしれない。例えば’Love’という曲のアレンジはポップなThe Velvet Undergroundといった感じで魅力的だ。けれど、それだけでは後世に残るような作品にはやはりならなかったのだと、この作品の中核を占めるのは、明らかに彼女の歌声だと思う。中でも’Someone I know’における、他のヴォーカリストには代え難いやさしいぬくもりに満ち満ちた歌声は秀逸である。他の人とは違う声、一般的な上手いとは違う声、それはタイミングによっては新しい音楽の世界を切り開く。だから今我々が彼女の声を初めて聴いた時には違和感は全くなく、それは彼女の時代にとっては異形だった歌声が、今ではひとつのスタンダードになっていることの象徴なのだろう。このことは奇しくも同じNew York出身のJulian Casablancasがのちに成し得たことでもある。

本作から約40年後にリリースされた’16 Words’では当然のことながら彼女の声は変わっている。もっと録音されるべきだった声に、過ぎ去った時間に想いを馳せる。それでも’Take A Picture’というアルバムは、1960年代後半の空気感を捉えつつも固有の世界観を持ち、流れゆく時の中でも変わらないタイムカプセルのように今においても新鮮な響きを放っている。そのような意味においては、まさに時代を切り取ったスナップ写真なのだと、そしてそれは瞬間であると同時に、時間としては完結、つまり永遠なのだと感じる。その次元に我々はこれからもアクセスし続け、至福のひと時を過ごし続けるのだろう。そして、ある者はそこでの体験を生かし、彼／彼女自身の新たなアートの糧とするかもしれない。そう、まるでMargoがThe Beach Boysから学んだように。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through ‘Take A Picture’ (album)?
A
I’m not trying to communicate with listeners…only hope they like the music.

For that , how did you try to make these songs?
A
The songs came one-at-a-time. My husband showed them to record companies. One of those companies said “why not let her do it”…and Bell Records wanted to release the album. He also talked to Joel Brodsky about artwork…and Joel wound up taking the photos.

Who inspired your vocal or sound ?
A
I wasn’t much of a singer, and my husband, David Rosner, suggested doubling my vocal. It worked!

What is the theme you are looking for through making music?
A
I wasn’t looking for a ‘theme’…the songs came ‘whole’…and were presented that way.
