♪PROFILE♪

Marble Arch started in 2013 as a solo project by Yann Le Razavet, who was also a guitarist for the French shoegather band Maria Faise. In 2014, they released their first album ‘The Bloom Of Division’. In the campaign ‘PARIS SESSION’ of SAINT LAURENT PARIS MEN ’S AW 2015-16 COLLECTION, which Hedi worked on, Yann was appointed as a model with young musicians representing France such as La Femme. In March 2019, they released a 2nd album ‘Children Of The Slump’ in a band of 5 people. In July, the music video for ‘Moonstruck’ was just released.

♪REVIEW♪

I will introduce Marble Arch’s 2nd album “Children Of The Slump”. Marble Arch is a band based in Paris, but has a history of starting with the solo project of Yann Le Razavet from Vocal / Guitar. So this time, in addition to interviewing him, I will delve deeper into Yann, referring to reviews and interviews from several French music sites.

He is from a local city called Lannion in France. The medieval cityscape still remains here. The city has also won 4 stars in the international horticultural competition ‘Entente Florare’. This calm and beautiful original landscape seems to have a potential influence on Yann’s aesthetics and the resulting artwork (he often uses flowers as motifs for his work). Yann joined several bands in his home town. He joined Maria Faise, a pop and Shoegaze band, as a guitarist since 2012 (current activity seems to have stopped). Apparently he was doing other work and music. However, he lost his job in 2013 and seems to have returned to his family. He made music in his childhood room and released it online, which caught the eye of the Paris label. And in 2014, as Marble Arch, he released the 1st album ‘The Bloom Of Division’ which was mainly composed of demos. In interviews at the time, he listed My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Deerhunter, The Wake, Radio Dept, Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, The New New Puritans 1st album, The Strokes and The Beatles as favorites.

He moved to Paris after making his first album. So he develops a solo project into a band. In parallel with the live activities, they started to produce their second album ‘Children Of The Slump’. Probably, Yann has begun making songs around 2015-7, as early as 2015. Since the release is in 2019, it takes a considerable amount of time. He is a cool character, but he seemed to have a strong musical ambition to make a masterpiece, and he continued to make it patiently for a long time. Numerous demos composed by Yann were carefully selected, bloodened by band organization, supported by girlfriend Racha Belmehdi for song lyrics, and finished by Barthélemy Bouveret who worked on French bands such as BraceBrace! And Good Morning Tv Polished with Mix. In the meantime, he also launched a label called Géographie (in French, meaning geography). 1st was mainly a summary of Yann’s demos. On the other hand, 2nd realized what he really wanted to do by taking the help of people and preparing the management system. This approach to music is similar to Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox from the US. They have similar hairstyles.

When I first listened to Marble Arch, I felt it was similar to Diiv (so I asked the interview). However, as I continued to listen to their albums, I was able to feel a wide musical background. Specifically, the second song ‘Instant Love’ is The Strokes, the third song ‘I’m on My Way’ is My Bloody Valentine’s shoe gaze, the fifth song ‘Moonstruck’ is Deerhunter-like psychedelic, the ninth song ‘Children Of The Slump’ is the theme of Twin Peaks. Still, this album is not a single work by Yann, but a Marble Arch band. In other words, it meets the requirements of an excellent work that combines a variety of references and originality, and has high quality as music. And at the heart of the band is what Yann wanted to express: ‘they capture the melancholic imagery and sublimate it into a fantasy paradise where listeners can visit’. This is a very delicate and beautiful form.
You can’t miss the beauty of the album cover photo. The picture of the flower placed on the car was taken in the 13th district of Paris where he lives. It seems that he, who loves pastel colors, has added flowers to the Benz, which is surrounded by sunset light. (Note also the color of his bed in the ‘Gold’ music video)

I especially like the most catchy song “Gold” in the album. This song has a new order-like guitar sound, but it feels more refreshing. If you haven’t listened to LP, please listen to this song first.

Marble Archの2ndアルバム‘Children Of The Slump’をご紹介します。Marble ArchはParisを拠点に活動するバンドでありますが、Vocal/GuitarのYann Le Razavetのソロプロジェクトからスタートした経緯があります。よって今回は、彼への取材に加えて、いくつかのフランスの音楽サイトのレビューやインタビューを参照にしながら、Yannについてじっくりと掘り下げていきます。

彼はFranceのLannionと呼ばれる地方都市の出身。ここは中世の街並みが今なお残っています。またこの都市は、国際的な園芸の大会’花のまちコンクール(Entente Florare)’のコンクールにて、４つ星を獲得したこともあるそうです。この穏やかで美しい原風景はYannの美学、そこから生じるアートワークにも潜在的に影響を与えていそう、というのは彼はよく花を作品のモチーフに使っていますからね。Yannはその故郷の街でいくつかのバンドに参加しました。彼曰く’PopでShoegaze’なバンド、Maria Faiseに2012年よりギタリストとして参加（現在での活動は停止している模様）。どうやら彼は他の仕事と音楽を掛け持ちでやっていたようです。しかしながら2013年に失業し、一旦実家に戻ったよう。そのタイミングで子供時代を過ごした部屋で楽曲を制作し、それをオンラインで公開したところ、Parisのレーベルの目にとまりました。そして彼は2014年にMarble Archとして、デモを主体にとりまとめた1stアルバム‘The Bloom Of Division’ をリリースしました。当時のインタビューにおいては彼は、My Bloody Valentine、Slowdive、Deerhunter、The Wake、Radio Dept、Brian Eno、Sonic Youthをはじめ、These New Puritansの1stアルバムやThe Strokes、The Beatlesまでをフェイバリットとして挙げています。

彼は最初のアルバムを作った後、パリに上京。そこで彼は、ソロプロジェクトをバンドに発展させます。そしてライブ活動と並行し、彼らは2ndアルバム‘Children Of The Slump’ の制作に着手しました。Yannはおそらく2016〜7年あたり、早くて2015年あたりから曲作りを始めているのではないでしょうか。リリースは2019年ですから、相当時間をかけています。彼はクールなキャラクターではありますが、最高傑作を作りたいという音楽的な強い野心があったようで、辛抱強く長期にわたって制作し続けました。Yannが作曲した多数のデモは精選され、バンド編成で血肉化し、楽曲の歌詞についてはガールフレンドRacha Belmehdiのサポートがあり、仕上げとしてBraceBrace!やGood Morning Tvなどのフランスのバンドを手掛けたBarthélemy BouveretのMixにて磨き上げられました。その間に彼はGéographie（フランス語で地理学の意味）というレーベルも立ち上げています。1stは主にYannのデモをまとめたものでした。一方2ndは、人の手を借り、運営体制までもしっかり整えることで、彼自身が本当にやりたかったことを実現しました。こういった音楽への取り組み方はUS出身のDeerhunterのBradford Coxに似ています。二人の髪型もなんか似てますね。

私はMarble Archを最初に聴いた時、Diivに似ていると感じました（なのでインタヴューでも質問しました）。しかしながら、私が彼らのアルバムを聴き続けていると、幅広い音楽のバックグラウンドを感じ取ることができました。具体的には、2曲目の’Instant Love’はThe Strokes、3曲目の’I’m on My Way’はMy Bloody Valentineのシューゲイズ、5曲目の’Moonstruck’はDeerhunterっぽいサイケ感、9曲目の‘Children Of The Slump’ はTwin Peaksのテーマですね。それでいてこのアルバムは、Yann一人の作品としてでもなく、Marble Archのバンドとしてまとまっている。つまり多様なリファレンスとオリジナリティを合わせもち、かつ音楽としてのクオリティが高いという優れた作品の要件を満たしているのです。そしてバンドの中核にあるのがYannが表現したかったこと、すなわち’彼らがメランコリーな心象風景を捉え、そしてそれをリスナーが訪れることのできる空想の楽園にまで昇華すること’でしょう。それがあまりに繊細で美しい形で実現している、それが本作です。
アルバムのカバー写真の美しさも見逃せなません。車の上に置かれた花の写真は、彼が住むParis の13区にて撮影されたもの。日没の光に包まれるベンツの上に、パステルカラーを愛する彼が花を添えたようです。（’Gold’のミュージックビデオの彼のベッドの色にも注目です）

私はアルバムの中でも最もキャッチーな曲’Gold’が特に気に入っています。この曲は、New Orderっぽいギターサウンドもありつつ、よりさわやかな感じが最高です。LP未聴の方はまずこの曲からぜひ聴いてみてください。

♪ABOUT BAND NAME♪

Here are the two origins of the band name Marbel Arch. Since it will be a little longer, I will introduce it separately from the review.

The first is the influence from the song with the same name. This is something you should be careful about, especially to the core fans. He replied in several past interviews that he took it from the name of a band called Barmorhea. But this is wrong. I looked for a song called Marble Arch for that band, but I couldn’t find it and I confirmed it to Yann. He says that he later found out that the songs he was influenced by were not actually in the same band. Furthermore, now it was impossible to find the song.

The second is about Marble Arch, located in the northeast corner of London, Hyde Park. This gate was built in 1828 as the entrance to Buckingham Palace and was moved to its current location in 1855 when the palace was expanded. Yann told his interview about Marble Arch at the bottom interview, ‘I learned about the place and the very heavy history’, which probably means: In the area where this gate was moved, there was a small gate called Tyburn. A gallows was installed in the vicinity, and the execution was actually performed. Furthermore, there is a fact that a seat was set up as a show for the general public, and it was operated by collecting seat fees. The nameplate (commemorative plaque) written as Tyburn tree remains at the place where the execution table was located. It seems that people who happen to visit are not aware of past facts. By the way, Yann is also an architect. From his work, you can see the influence of his occupation from time to time, like the building in the ‘Gold’ music video. That’s why he might have thought of the beauty of Marble Arch’s architecture as a contrast between the local history of the architecture. And it may also be a metaphor for the theme he explores, ‘Melancory’.

Marbel Archというバンド名の２つの由来について記します。少し長くなるので、レビューとは分けて紹介します。

1つ目は同名の曲からの影響。これはみなさんに、特にコアなファンの方に、注意してお伝えしなければならないところです。彼はいくつかの過去のインタヴューにて、Barmorheaというバンドの曲名から取ったと答えています。しかしこれは誤りです。私はそのバンドのMarble Archという曲を探したのですがどうしても見つからず、Yann本人に確認しました。彼が言うには、彼が影響を受けた曲は、実は同バンドの曲ではなかったことが後にわかったそうです。さらに今となってはその曲を探しあてることができないということでした。

2つ目は、London、ハイドパークの北東角に位置す大理石の門（Marble Arch）についてです。この門は1828年にバッキンガム宮殿への入り口として建てられ、1855年に宮殿の増築の際、現在の場所へ移動されました。Yannは下部のインタヴューにてMarble Archについての質問に対し’その場所と非常に重いその歴史について学んだ’と語っていますが、これはおそらく以下のことを指しています。この門が移動された地域には、タイバーン（Tyburn）と呼ばれた（今はなき）小さな門が設置されていました。その付近には絞首台が設置され、実際に処刑が執り行われていました。さらにその場所には、一般庶民の見世物として観覧席が設置され、席料を徴収して運営されていたという事実です。現在、処刑台があった場所には、Tyburn treeと記載された銘板（記念プラーク）が残る程度だそうです。たまたま訪れた人々にはまず過去の事実に気づかないようになっているようです。ところでYannは建築家でもあります。彼の作品からは、’Gold’のミュージックビデオにでてくるビルのように、時折その職業の影響が見てとれます。だからこそ彼は、Marble Archの建築としての美しさと、その建築物が置かれた同地の歴史のコントラストに想うところがあったのでしょう。そしてそれは彼の探求するテーマ、’メランコリー’のメタファー（暗喩）でもあるのかもしれません。

A
I think I want to transmit emotions, melancholy or joy in passing through a personal prism, sincere ….

For that , how did you try to make these songs?
A
I try to create by instinct, moments and find a theme, a frame, a feeling, a global color….The lyrics come last after finding the rhythm, the　intensity.However this is not the easiest moment because I try to stay in the experience.I think that’s important.My girlfriend helped me a lot for that, for creating some lyrics

I created it in 2013 in my teenage room, back to my parents because of　unemployment.I released my first album ‘The Bloom Of Division’ and then created the band when I arrived in Paris in 2014.After a few gigs, I started to write and compose the second album ‘Children Of The Slump’ in 2015-2016.It took me more time because I wanted to create an album with a best quality sound.Now I have got a new band with friends, it’s perfect.

A
Once, I heard this name in a beautiful song, quite sad ….Then I learned about the place and its very strong history.Maybe the fact that I am also an architect explains this.

Musicians, architects , artists , politics, my girlfriend… a lot of people, I can’t give you names 🙁

A
I really like the band but it’s not my favorite.
I think the tracks are pretty repetitive….If we had to compare I would say that Beach Fossil took a bolder and more successful turn.

Would you recommend French bands of same generation？ Then how do you think about French rock scene in these days?
A
I think that today there is a lot of good band in France and it’s super cool.TH da Freak, Bryan ‘s Magic Tears,Brace!Brace!,Territory, Good Morning Tv,Rendez Vous, etc… They are all friends！

A
I never knew how Hedi discovered Marble Arch, but he mailed me in 2015 for his french band campaign with La Femme etc.So I went to LA for being shot by him. It was so cool!!　
Then we kept in touch and he invite me for SAINT LAURENT shows and CELINE too.These shows were very impressive, delicate, refined.Lights, music, ambiences, models and fashion, everything is perfectly executed.

Fashion, musique, movies, architecture ….He is very curious about people. Hedi is a very very good person, very kind….

A

この曲はもともと実験的なビデオによってリリースしたいと思っていたんだ。夢と不眠症の間にある Moonstruck（気のふれたの意。狂気は月の光の影響とかつて考えられていたことから）は夜の旅。興奮状態が現実と夢の間をナビゲートしてゆく。それを、サイケデリックなビジュアルの妄想によって描いていったんだ。

A

僕は本当にバンドが大好きなんだけれど、そのバンドは好きではないんだよね。曲があまりに繰り返しすぎる気がしてね。もし比べられるとするなら、むしろより大胆で曲作りに成功しているBeach Fossilの方がいいかな。

A

彼がMarble Archをどのように見つけたのはよく知らないんだ。だけど2015年に、フランスのバンドを起用したブランドのキャンペーン、La Femmeらとともに誘ってくれたんだ。それで撮影のためにLAまでいったんだけど、素晴らしくクールだったね。その後も連絡は取り続けていて、SAINT LAURENTはもちろんCELINEのショーにも招待してくれたんだ。ショーは繊細で、洗練されていて、とても印象的だった。光、音楽、雰囲気、モデルそしてファッション、その何もかもが完璧な域に達していたよ。

A
