♪PROFILE♪
Luke Thomas is a graphic designer from Vermont, USA. After graduating from art school in Minneapolis, he began his career as an artist. He is currently based in Los Angeles. His younger brother Kyle Thomas is known for his work in the garage band King Tuff. Luke has provided artwork for the band and many other bands and events.

Luke Thomasはアメリカ、バーモント州出身のグラフィックデザイナー。ミネアポリスの美術学校を卒業後、アーティストとしての活動をスタート。現在はロサンゼルスを拠点に活動している。弟のKyle Thomasは、ガレージバンドKing Tuffとしても有名。Lukeは同バンドをはじめ、多くのバンドやイベントにアートワークを提供している。
♪INTRODUCTION♪
Luke has a reputation for a style influenced by punk rock culture. His appeal has attracted also Hedi Slimane. Originally a part of a flier designed by Luke, ‘Blood Luster’ suddenly became a fashion icon in the mid 2000’s. Hedi introduced Luke’s work, including ‘Blood Luster’, in a major way at Saint Laurent Paris Spring / Summer 2014 Collection.
My blog, Sei Library, has featured exclusive interviews with artists (Swmrs, Pypy) who have provided soundtracks for Hedi Slimane since his time at previous brand. With this background, Luke Thomas and I have been in contact since 2016. And now, Luke has kindly agreed to create an original artwork for this blog. I have also prepared a collaborative tee for you to check out.

Lukeはパンクロックのカルチャーに影響を受けた作風に定評がある。その魅力はHedi Slimaneをも惹きつけた。もともとはLukeが描いたフライヤーの一部として存在していた、Blood Luster。それが2000年代中盤突如、ファッションシーンのアイコンとなる。Hediは‘Blood Luster’をはじめとしたLukeの作品をSaint Laurent Paris Spring / Summer 2014 Collectionで大々的に紹介したのだ。
当ブログSei Libraryは、Hediが前ブランドに在籍していた頃から、彼にサウンドトラックを提供したアーティスト（Swmrs、Pypy）の独占インタビューを紹介してきた。そういった背景もあり、私とLuke Thomasは2016年よりコンタクトを取っていた。そして今回、Lukeの厚意により、このブログのためにオリジナルのアートワークを制作してくれた。コラボレーションTシャツも用意したので、ぜひご覧いただきたい。

♪INTERVIEW WITH LUKE THOMAS♪
Q
What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to viewers through your artworks?
A
I hope that my art communicates a sense of joy and inspiration. I’m always trying to achieve a personal sense of perfection and satisfaction and I like that others will find the same satisfaction in looking at my work. Maybe when wearing my work, this sense of perfection will give someone a feeling of power.

How do you try to make your artworks?
A
It is not always easy! Sometimes I draw something over and over before I get it right. I am a very slow worker sometimes. I spend lots of time day dreaming and thinking about possibilities. Maybe too much time is spent this way haha.

How did you make Blood Luster drawing?
A
Blood Luster started as an ink drawing. It was a small detail on a flier for a rock show on Halloween which I had drawn in 2012.

How did Hedi Slimane become interested in Blood Luster?
A
My friend Beth was working with Hedi at the time and she encouraged me to submit my portfolio. I had included a sample of the flier in my portfolio and Hedi asked if we could pull this detail out and turn it into it’s own design. Hedi was very smart to notice this detail and see it’s potential!

How did you try to make illustrations of Sei Library?
A
It was a joy to make the illustrations for Sei Library because Sei gave me some good ideas for inspiration. I am a lover of books, so it was easy to get excited about this graphic.

作品を通して、見る人に伝えたい最も大切なことは何ですか？
A
喜びやインスピレーションが伝わることを願っている。僕は常に個人的な完成度と満足度を追求している、そして作品を見た他の人達が同じような満足感を得られることも願っているよ。僕の作品を身につけることで、ある人にはこの完璧な感覚によって、パワーを感じられるのだろう。

作品を作る際に心がけていることは何ですか？
A
いつも簡単に描けるとは限らない。何度も何度も描いているうちに、うまくいくこともある。ともすれば、僕はとても仕事が遅いこともある。夢を見たり、可能性を考えたりすることに多くの時間を費やしているんだよ。あまりにも多くの時間を使っているのかもしれないね。

Blood Lusterの絵はどのように描かれましたか？
A
Blood Lusterはインクで描いた絵から始まった。2012年に描いたハロウィンのロックショーのフライヤーに描かれていた小さなディテールだったんだ。

Hedi SlimaneがBlood Lusterに興味を持ったきっかけとは？
A
当時、友人のBethがHediと一緒に仕事をしていて、彼女に勧められてポートフォリオを提出したんだ。私はポートフォリオの中にフライヤーのサンプルを入れていて、Hediはこのディテールを抜き出して独自のデザインにできないかと言ってくれたんだ。このディテールに気づき、その可能性を見出したHediは、とてもスマートな人だよ。

Sei Libraryのイラストはどのようにして作ったのですか？
A
Sei Libraryのイラストは、Seiが良いアイデアを出してくれたので、楽しく作ることができた。僕は本が大好きなので、このグラフィックにはとてもワクワクしたよ。
