Lady Bird formed in 2016 and are a three-piece band from Royal Tunbridge Wells, a city in Kent, southeast of London. They released their debut ep ‘Social Potions’ on Girl Fight Records in 2018, founded by the punk rock duo Slaves, also from their hometown. In March 2020 the band have released a brand new single called ‘Got Lucky’, which is being released on their own label ‘Purple Stains’ in conjunction with JägerMusik. ‘Brainwashing Machine Setting’ (ep) including ‘Got Lucky’ will be released on June 2020.

Lady Bird released ‘Got Lucky’ in March. This was a new frontier that broke their image. So far, they have released songs based on punk rock. They are influenced by American and British punk rock as well as Oasis and The Libertines. The former was a hero of the UK alternative rock scene in the 90s and the latter in the 00s and it is one of the characteristics of their band’s generation.

‘Got Lucky’ is a song featuring Don Rennols (vocal / organ) rap that goes beyond the boundaries of punk rock. They also value American old and modern hip hop, so it may be inspired by it. Of course the punk rock’s sharpness remains outstanding because the song itself was born from Alex’s guitar riffs. The combination of the two is powerful and impressive.

Of course, in the past, there are songs by British musicians that mix rock and hip hop. For example, in the 00s The Streets ‘Fit But You Know It’ and JamieT ‘Sticks’ n’ Stones’. Lady Bird’s ‘Got Lucky’ may also be described in this way.

‘Brainwashing Machine Setting’ (ep) including ‘Got Lucky’ will be released in June. The second song released was a song called ‘WWW’. In contrast to ‘Got Lucky’, this song pursues their punk more sharply. The sound is similar to that of Melocore, which was popular in Japan in the 90s. We can expect they will release the remaining two songs to make up the ep.

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
We like to explore different themes which usually share similarities from a wider narrative. Usually these stories are based on the struggles of a young man which follow a journey. For example ‘Social Potions’ has a loose narrative of a character fighting a battle with drugs and ends up returning in tunes like Reprisal. This character isn’t based on any one person, but embodies us all and everything that is right or wrong, or more complex.

Why did you choose Lady Bird your band name?
A
Lady Bird came up as a suggestion following weeks of contemplation and a large list of other potentials. It’s hard to gather your essence into a single word or two, but I guess that’s the aim of the game with finding a name of representation. We all like the feminine connotations of Lady Bird, which I suppose comes from the great privilege of each having an ideal mother in our lives. It came directly from my mother’s mother whose name was Jenny, and she used to wear ladybird jewelry. A full tribute to the love of a mother… Lady Bird is the essence of a loving mother!

Who inspires you?
A
Lady Bird draw inspiration from lots of different music types…. From jazz to soul and from rock to rap. I’ll pick a few older legends and some modern heroes: Oasis, The Stone Roses, The Eagles, The Libertines, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Eminem, The Streets & Stevie Wonder,Chronixx, Willie J Healy, Slaves, Stormzy, Skepta, Yizzy, Bay Trilla & Idles

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this?
A
That satisfying sexual urges isn’t as satisfying as securing sincere friendships <3

How did you try to make this song for that?
A
We wrote the song in what was for us a new process of composition at the time. Alex had the riff kicking around for while and he wrote the arrangement with Joe in a short rehearsal together one afternoon. I was in the corner writing the lyrics which were inspired by something my wife said to me once… “write something from the girls perspective” she said. I didn’t quite manage that but this song took its shape from that angle. It’s common to overlook the intrinsic value of our female comrades when we are attracted to them, so this tune tells a story about meeting someone on a night out who is attractive, but the quest for sincere friendship overrides any other underlying influences.
The track also features my lovely wife Tilly in the video as well as the tune itself. She is the embodiment of pure female loving energy, much like the motherly nature of our name.

Lady Birdは、数週間よく考えて、他の候補の名前のリストを経て出てきた案なんだ。本質を1つか2つの単語にまとめるのは難しいけれど、表現したいことを名前にすることこそがこのゲームの目的だと思うんだ。僕らはみんな、Lady Birdの女性的な意味合いが好きなんだ。これは、それぞれのメンバーが生活の中で理想的な母親がいるという大きな特権から由来していると思う。Lady Birdは私のおばあちゃんのジェニーに由来するんだ。彼女は昔てんとう虫の宝石を身に着けてたんだ。うん、母の愛への最高の賛辞でもある。てんとう虫こそ愛する母の本質だよ！

A
この曲は、当時の僕らにとって新しい作曲のプロセスだった。Alexはしばらくリフを引きまくり、彼はJoeと一緒に午後の短いリハーサルでアレンジをしたんだ。それから妻が以前私に言ってくれた”女の子の視点から何かを書いて”といったことにインスパイアされた部分があった。これまでなかなかうまくできていなかったのだけれど、この曲では女性からの視点というのが形になった。僕らが女性達に惹きつけられる時、魅力的な女性達の本質的な価値を見落とすことはよくあること。この曲では魅力的な夜の外出で誰かに会うことを物語なのだけれど、性的な魅力や恋人の関係といった女性的な面にとらわれず、女性達との誠実な友情を探求することは素晴らしいってことなんだ。
ミュージックビデオの中では僕の素敵な妻 Tillyと曲自体をフィーチャーしている。彼女は僕らの名前（Lady Bird）の母性的な性質によく似た、純粋で女性的な愛するエネルギーの具現化でもある。
