♪PROFILE♪

Laena “Geronimo” Myers-Ionita is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. In recent years she has been featured on multiple album releases with her band Feels (vocals, guitar), Numb.er (bass, vocals), Shannon Lay (violin), and others. In the last decade she has appeared on many recordings with other artists including Fuzz, Allah Las, Ariel Pink, John Frusciante and The Like.
L.M.I is Laena’s solo project and started recording in 2019. Jeff Fribourg from Numb.er participates in the synthesizer part. Her song “LUV” was selected Celine Women’s Spring/Summer 2020 Campaign song, and it attracted much attention. The release of a album containing this song is expected.

Laena “Geronimo” Myers-Ionitaは、カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスで生まれ育ったソングライターであり多彩な楽器演奏者でもある。近年では、Feels（ヴォーカル、ギター）、Numb.er（ヴォーカル、ボーカル）、Shannon Lay（バイオリン）など、複数のプロジェクトに参加している。過去10年間では、Fuzz、Allah Las、Ariel Pink、John FruscianteやThe Likeなどの数多くアーティストのレコーディングにも参加している。
L.M.IはLaenaのソロプロジェクトで、2019年にレコーディングをスタート。Numb.erのJeff Fribourgがシンセサイザーのパートで参加している。Celine Women’s Spring/Summer 2020 Campaignに、L.M.Iへの”LUV”が選ばれたことで話題を集めた。同作品を収録したアルバムのリリースが期待される。

In November 2019, the movie of Celine Women’s Spring/Summer 2020 Campaign was released. At that time, the artist called L.M.I, who provided the soundtrack, became a hot topic along with the beautiful pictures taken by Hedi Slimane. Of course, the artists who participated in his project get more or less attention. But she was a little different from the other artists.The reasons are not only was the music great, but we didn’t find who L.M.I was. Many people consider providing music to collections and campaigns an opportunity to promote themselves. But she remained silent. Not only that. People researched about her. But they couldn’t get to her. That was unnatural. What I could guess was that she intentionally hid herself.

Time passes, when people are giving up, this person revealed the fact on Instagram in March 2020. Amazingly, L.M.I was a solo project by Laena Geronimo. Some people may not know her name. She has participated in the recording and live of quite a few bands and musicians because she can play most of the instruments from violins to vocals and bass, guitar at high levels. it’s the kind of artists you know. For example, she has participated in Numb.er, Escape-ism, Tomorrow Tulips, No Parents, Ariel Pink, John Frusciante in recordings, and has supported Ty Segall and The Growlers in live shows. In Numb.er’s masterpiece album ‘Goodbye’, the splendor of the baseline was outstanding. This performance was by Laena! As her own band, she used to work for The Like and now for Feels.

And for those who knew her for a long time, the fact that Laena = L.M.I was probably surprising. Because she is good at playing aggressive and masculine rock sounds with a wealth of musical knowledge and outstanding skill. However, L.M.I’s projects stand out for being more feminine than masculine and more instinctive than rational.

She basically continued her musical career using the name Geronimo. It was also a hidden manifestation that she used to pursue her masculine side. On the other hand An overly talented professional, she quietly built a lonely sacred place in her heart that no one could enter during her growth. It is a world where time remained as a girl. On the other side She isn’t at all strong and is delicate, vulnerable and extremely shy girl. It is a dull and fragile world. But there was something that only her could feel in this world. When she was young, she could feel this wonderfulness, but it was difficult to convey it to people .

But she can do that now. She can still feel the inner world that she has been accustomed to since she was a girl. With her overwhelming musical skills,she perfectly expressed what she felt there in L.M.I’s project. The reverberation was replaced by the guitar sound, and the scenery she saw was replaced by her voice.

Through her music, listeners may be able to notice their own world. To the forgotten inner world.

PS:
This campaign also highlights the excellence of the model. Curiously, in the movie of this campaign, L.M.I’s music and model are not only feminine but also masculine. The two genders is completely synchronized. L.M.I also praised this work. The model is Laura Beuger. She know this blog and planned to comment for this post, but for some reason it couldn’t happen. Still, it is true that she tried to cooperate. In other words, it must have been an important campaign for her.

2019年11月に、Celine Women’s Spring/Summer 2020 Campaignのムービーが公開された。当時、Hedi Slimaneによって撮影された美しい写真とともに、サウンドトラックを提供したL.M.Iと呼ばれるアーティストが話題になった。もちろん、彼のプロジェクトに参加したアーティストは多かれ少なかれ注目を集めた。ただ彼女は他のアーティスト達とは少し状況が異なった。音楽が素晴らしかったことに加え、L.M.Iが誰なのかがわからなかったことだ。多くの人々は、コレクションやキャンペーンに音楽を提供したことを、自らをプロモーションするチャンスとする機会だと考える。しかし、彼女は沈黙を守ったままであった。それだけではない。人々が調べても、彼女に辿りつくことができなかったのである。それはあまりに不自然なことだった。推測できたことは、意図的に彼女が正体を隠しているということであった。

時は流れ、人々が諦めかけていた頃、2020年3月、当の本人がInstagramにて事実を明かした。驚くべきことに、L.M.IはLaena Geronimoによるソロプロジェクトだったのだ。彼女の名前を知らない方もいるかもしれない。実は彼女は、ヴァイオリンからヴォーカル、バンドの楽器のほとんどを高いレベルで演奏できるため、かなり多くのバンドやミュージシャンのレコーディングやライヴに参加している。このブログにアクセスしている方なら、まず耳にしている種類のアーティスト達だ。例えば、彼女は、レコーディングではNumb.er、Escape-ism、Tomorrow Tulips、No Parents、Ariel Pink、John Fruscianteに参加したことがあり、ライヴではTy SegallやThe Growlersのサポートしたことがある。Numb.erの傑作アルバム’Goodbye’では、ベースラインの素晴らしさが際立っていた。その演奏は、Laenaによるものであったのだ！　彼女自身のバンドとしては、以前はThe Likeにて、現在はFeelsで活動している。

彼女は基本的に、Geronimoの名前を使用して音楽活動を続けていた。それは、彼女が自身の男性的な側面を追求するために用いた、隠れた意思表示でもあった。その一方、あまりに有能なプロフェッショナルである彼女は、成長の過程において、誰も入ることのない孤高の聖地を心の中にひっそりと築きあげていた。それはおぼろげで儚い世界である。そこは、少女のまま時が止まっている世界。彼女は別の面ではちっとも強くはなかったのだ。繊細で傷つきやすく、極めてシャイな一人の少女のままだったのだ。けれども彼女にしか感じることのできない何かがそこにはあった。もちろん幼い頃の彼女では、その世界の素晴らしさを感じることはできても、形にして、人に伝えることは難しいことであった。

今の彼女にはそれができる。彼女は今でも、いつでも少女の頃から慣れ親しんだ内側の世界を感じることができる。その場所で感じたことを、今の彼女の圧倒的な音楽的なスキルによって、完璧な形に現実化したのがL.M.Iの作品である。残響はギターサウンドに、目にした風景は彼女の声へと置き換えられていった。彼女の音楽を通して、リスナーは自身の世界に気づくことができるかもしれない。忘れ去れていた自分の内側の世界へと。

追記：
このキャンペーンはモデルの素晴らしさも際立っている。不思議なことに、このキャンペーンの動画では、L.M.Iの音楽とモデルともに、女性らしさはもちろん、男性的な側面も感じられる。二つの性が完全にシンクロしている。L.M.Iもこの作品を絶賛していた。モデルは、Laura Beugerという方。彼女はこのブログをご存知で、この投稿のためにコメントをいただく予定だったが、諸事情により実現できなかった。それでも彼女は協力しようとしてくれたことは事実でもある。つまり、彼女にとってもこのキャンペーンは特別なものであったのだろう。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A 
The whole human experience! Often I write songs by just listening in to whatever is playing in my head. I make different kinds of songs to explore different kinds of feelings, and I have my band Feels which plays songs that come from more energetic, aggressive feelings. The L.M.I. recordings are a collection of songs that came from more intimate, soft feelings.

Why did you choose L.M.I your solo project name?
A 
These are my true initials; my legal name is Laena Myers-Ionita. My last name is hyphenated because my parents were never married. I have been known as Laena Geronimo for over a decade, playing in many bands. I took the name Geronimo because my Mother always told me that if I was a boy, she would have given me this name. I am naturally a very shy person but I felt stronger as Laena Geronimo. But with these more intimate recordings I wanted to present myself in my most honest, vulnerable form.

Who inspires you?
A 
L.M.I. takes a lot of inspiration from John Lennon, Patti Smith, Mazzy Star, Syd Barrett, Angelo Badalamenti, Rowland S. Howard, PJ Harvey, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Patsy Cline, Cat Power… American blues legends like Leadbelly, Eastern folk music (my Mother is Romanian), experimental noise (my Father was in DEVO), classical orchestral music (I am a classically-trained violinist).

Why did you make this song for Hedi by a solo project?
Did you introduced to Hedi by Jeff Fribourg(Numb.er)?
A 
Yes, I was introduced to Hedi by Jeff Fribourg. Jeff and I have been close for many years. I had already made this song, along with an entire album that has not been released yet (Jeff actually played synthesizer on some other songs). He sent the album to Hedi, and LUV. was chosen for the campaign without any changes being made.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this song?
A 
I would like to communicate to listeners the beauty that exists in the dream state of mind. In dreams things are a little blurry and anything is possible. This song feels more like a daydream than a dream that you have at night. A delicate and distant feeling.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A 
When I was making the record I decided that this dreamy feeling would sound nice to begin the album with, to bring people close. It is an introduction. I wrote the chord progression many years ago when I was a little girl, and always thought that it was pretty enough to keep playing it. There are some lyrics later on in the song that you do not hear in the campaign videos; ‘When I say I’m in love, you best believe I mean love ‘LUV’. At first we love so intense and believe it will be forever like that, but Who knows what true love is? Better to say LUV. These lyrics are quotes from ‘Give Him A Great Big Kiss’ by Shangri-Las and ‘Looking For A Kiss’ by The New York Dolls. Nothing is how we expect.I use this quote like a tribute to these artists.  And after the lyrics the song transitions with violins into noise that leads into the next song.

How did you feel after watching Celine Campaign Movie?
A
Honored and inspired! It was truly amazing to be able to provide the soundtrack to such exquisite photography, fashion design and art direction. I love how the model looks fragile but edgy at the same time- feminine but very androgynous too. It all balances together beautifully and I am very proud to be a part of it.

A
人間が体験すること全て！　自分の頭の中で演奏している曲なら何でも、それに耳を傾けるだけで曲を書くことができる。さまざまな種類の曲を作ることで、いろいな種類の感情を探究しているの。私のバンドFeelsでは、よりエネルギッシュで攻撃的な感情から生まれた曲を演奏しているわ。（一方、ソロプロジェクトである） L.M.I.のレコーディングでは、より親密でやさしい感情から生まれた曲達が揃っている。

A
L.M.Iは私の本当のイニシャルなの。私の本名はLaena Myers-Ionita。両親が結婚したことがないので、姓にハイフンを付けている。私は10年以上の間、Laena Geronimoとして知られて、多くのバンドで演奏しているわ。私がGeronimo（ジェロニモ）という名前をつけたのは、母がいつも私が男の子だったらこの名前を授けただろうと、いつも言っていたから。私はもともと恥ずかしがり屋だけれど、Laena Geronimoのように強くなっていった。けれど、L.M.Iのより親密なレコーディングでは、自分を最も正直で、ありのままの形で表現したかったの。

A
はい。Jeff FribourgからHediに紹介されたわ。Jeffと私は長年親しい仲で。キャンペーンの前に、すでにソロとしてこの曲を作っていて。まだリリースされていないのだけれど、アルバムももう作っていたの（Jeffは実際に他のいくつかの曲でシンセサイザーを演奏くれた）。彼がそのアルバムをHediに送ってくれて、”LUV”という曲がそのままの状態でキャンペーンの曲として選ばれたの。

A
心の中、夢に存在する美しさをリスナーに伝えたい。夢の中で物事は少しぼやけていて、何でもできる。この曲は、夜に見る夢というよりは、空想のような感じね。繊細でいて、距離があるといった風に。

そのためにどのように曲を作ろうとしたのですか？
A
レコードを制作していた時に、この夢のような感じの曲が、アルバムの幕開けにいいと思ったの。人々を惹きつけるような感じがして。序章としての役割ね。何年も前、私が小さな女の子の時にこのコード進行を書いていて、この曲を演奏するのはそれで十分だと思っていた。歌の後半には、キャンペーンのビデオでは聞こえない歌詞があって。”私が恋していると言うとき、あなたは私が恋している(LUV)と信じるのが一番良い”。私たちが期待するものは何もないでしょ。最初はとても愛していて、永遠に続くと信じているけれど、本当の愛が何であるか誰が知っているのかなって。だからLUVの方がいいと思う。この歌詞は、Shangri-Las の’Give Him A Great Big Kiss’とNew York Dollsの’Looking For A Kiss’からの引用でもあり、彼女／彼らへのトリビュートでもある。歌詞の後に曲はバイオリンがノイズに変わり、次の曲へとつながっていく。

A
名誉とインスピレーション！ このような絶妙な写真、ファッションデザイン、アートディレクションにサウンドトラックを提供できることは本当に素晴らしいことだったわ。モデルがとても繊細でいて、それでいて強さも感じさせる写真がすごく好きになった。フェミニンでありつつ、同時にとてもアンドロジナスでもあって。そのすべてが美しくバランスが取れていて、その一部になれたことをとても誇りに思っているわ。
