こんにちは。IDOLの新しいEPを紹介します。Vocal and guitarのDeclanは僕にとっての最高のミュージシャンの一人です。彼の作品がとても好きです。
音楽（メロディー、ハーモニー、彼の声、ギターのリフ）、写真（アートワークや彼自身）、ロゴ（アートワークやバンドのロゴ）。彼はとても頭が良く、才能があります。そしてまた理想のために熱心に働く人でもあります。だからこそ彼は新しいサウンドを作るためには、新しいバンドメンバーが必要だとわかっていたんだと思います。前作のEPは完全にDeclanのソロプロジェクトといった感じですが今作はバンドとして作られています。だから、’First Act’というタイトルなんですね。結果は素晴らしいです。すべての曲がよいので是非チェックしてみてください。
I introduce IDOL’s new EP.Declan（Vocal and guitar） is one of the best musicians for me.I really like his work:music（melody and harmony, his voice and guitar riff）,photo(artwork and himself),logo（artwork band logo）.He is very smart and talented.And also he is hard worker for ideal. So He knew he need new band member for making new sound.Previous EP was Declan’s solo project.But this time He made this EP as a band.So it called “First Act”.Result is splendid.All songs are really good. Q
この作品で一番伝えたいことはどんなことですか？
A
新しいEPにおける一番の狙いは、力強いコーラスと興味深いメロディーで素晴らしいポップソングを作ることだった。音楽でみんなの気持ちを高めたいと思ったし、聴く人を一日中夢中にさせるような何かを作りたいと思った。多くのロックミュージックは、明瞭さを欠いていると時々感じることがある。けれども僕らは、ある程度個人としてのバックグラウンド、広いスパンの音楽的な嗜好に由来しつつ、このバンドにとって、僕らはソングライティングのまわりのすべての脂肪を排除して、ただフックを作ろうとしている。

どんなところにこだわって作りましたか？
A
僕とJames、ギタリストの二人はアイディアを思いつくのに時間を費やしたよ。そのアイディアをギターのリフに、シンプルなリズムにしていった。僕らはそれをラップトップのデモにしてレイヤーを加えて、曲の違う部分を作っていった。それから、それをリハーサルに持っていてバンドの残りのメンバーに聴かせた、彼らからのインプットを得るために。曲を書き終えると、歌詞を加えた、主にコーラスに注力して。それからライブの準備や、スタジオできちんとスタジオで録音するために練習し続けた。僕らの作曲のプロセスにとりわけ特別なところはない。でもあえて言うとしたら、こだわった明確なフォーミュラがあった。それが最終的にどんな曲であるべきか、どのような音で終わるべきかを指揮していったんだ。
アートワークについて言えば、僕らはとても視覚的なバンドだと思う、イメージやビデオの上に置かれた時、僕らの音楽は一番響くんだ。バンドの背後にあるインスピレーションはたくさんある。テーマはたいてい、アメリカーナ、ウェスタンカルチャーだ。それを歌詞や音楽、もしくはアルバムのアートワークのインスピレーションにしたりする。例えば、”Burn Me Up”のシングルのイメージは国際宇宙ステーションへの再補給のために発射しているSpace-X rocket。これは1960年代の宇宙競争への関連で。それから、おそらくもっと明らかなのは、歌詞の中のイメージにある、社会生活の中での破壊的に燃え上がること、あるいは素晴らしい冒険に向けて準備すること。
“First Act” EPのカバーはキャデラックの後ろで。これはモーターカーのイノベーションと、西部が車を永遠に動力化して我々の生き方や働き方を変えていったかについてのリファレンスなんだ。あるいは、それは深くはないのかもしれない。一日の終わり、単純にその見た目が好きなんだ。でも僕らがすることにはいくつかの階層がいつだってあるんだよ。

新しいバンドメンバーで何かありましたか？
（訳注：前作はDeclanのソロプロジェクトだったが、今作はバンドとして取り組んでいる）
A
もちろん、最近六ヶ月で完全に一人前のバンドになったよ。Aaron MolyneauxとJames Tickleがドラム、ベースを演奏してくれている。彼らはともに素晴らしいミュージシャンだよ。

最近では何にインスパイアされますか？
A
個人的には、最近はたくさんAngels and AirwavesそしてBlink 182を聴いている。ギターのハーモニーとプロダクションが好きなんだ。それから古いDoo-wopのグループも聴いているよ。ボーカルのハーモニーすごく好きで、それは僕らの音楽と結びつけられるようなものでもあるんだ。

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this EP?
A
Our biggest goal with our EP was to write great pop songs with big chorus and interesting melodies. We wanted to lift people with our music and write something that sticks with them throughout their day. I feel that sometimes, a lot of rock music is trying very hard to be obscure and although we partly come from that background as individuals, with our wide-spanning musical tastes; for this band, we wanted to eliminate all the fat around our songwriting, and just create hooks.

For that , how did you try to make these songs? Please teach me from the perspective of music , lyrics and artwork.
A
Myself and James, the guitarist would spend hours coming up with ideas, be it a guitar riff or perhaps a simple rhythm. We would demo it on my laptop and try to add layers and different sections to create a song. We would then take it to rehearsal and show it to the rest of the band, to get their input. After the music is written, we add some lyrics to it, focusing mainly on the chorus and keep practicing it until it’s ready to play live or record properly in studio. There’s nothing particularly special about our writing process, but as I mentioned before, we have a certain formula that we stick to, that dictates the end result of what a song should be or sound like when finished.
For the artworks, I feel that we’re a very visual band, and that our music sounds best when put to image or video. The inspiration behind a lot of our bands themes are of Americana, or Western culture in general, be it in the lyrics, music, or the inspiration for album artwork… For instance, the “Burn Me Up” single has an image of a Space-X rocket, launching to resupply the International Space Station. This was a imagery to the space race of the 1960’s and perhaps more obviously, to the imagery within the lyrics, of destructively “burning up” in your social life, or embarking on a great adventure.
The “First Act” EP cover, has the rear end of a cadillac, this is a reference to the invention of the motor car and how the west harnessed it to forever change the way we live and work. Perhaps, it’s not that deep, at the end of the day, we just liked the way it looked, but there’s always a few layers to everything that we do.

Did anything happen in new band member?
A
Yeah, within the last 6 months we have become a fledged fledged band, with Aaron Molyneaux and James Tickle playing the Drums and the Bass Guitar. They are both great musicians.
Q
Who inspire you in these days?
A
Personally, I have been most recently listening to a lot of Angels and Airwaves and Blink 182. I like the Guitar harmonies and the production. I have also been listening to some old Doo-wop groups, I really like the vocal harmonies, which is something we try and incorporate into our own music.
