Hugo Hamlet is a multi-faceted performer based in London. He studied theatre at the renowned Phillippe Gaulier’s Clown school in Paris and has recently performed in shows in London. On the musical side, he performs as part of the Lily Ashley unit Voo lee Voo and as a solo artist.

‘No One Can Stop Me’ was a phrase that encouraged me. The social changes brought about by the coronavirus infection had left me pretty tired. Of course, I know there are many people in the world who are facing more difficult situations than me. Anyway this song, like ‘One More Chance’ by Bloc Party, has encouraged me and made me get up and go.

Hugo Hamlet is a talented artist. He can play several instruments – guitar, bass guitar, piano and oboe. He also composes music and writes lyrics. He is also an actor on stage.

His parents are prominent dancers. He may have inherited their great talent. However, it wasn’t just it. He watched his parents take to the stage as performers from an early age. Not only that, he also knew the hard work they put in behind the scenes. The world of acting was a fiercely competitive society where you have to be different and be able to give a stunning performance to survive. This is why his parents also worked tirelessly to hone their skills in order to perform. This was the most important thing he learned from his parents.

No matter how talented he was, if he wanted to play an instrument, compose, vocalize, write lyrics, or make his plays better, he had to work for it. He willingly took it on from an early age. Perseverance is his strength.

He once formed a band like any other London youth. He formed a number of bands with different people, but none of them worked out. With his overwhelming aesthetic and incredible stoicism, he couldn’t easily compromise with his members in his musical career.

‘No One Can Stop Me’. This phrase doesn’t come from someone who has everything going well. Nor does it come from someone who is depressed because things are not going well. It comes from someone who has hit a wall in his life many, many times and overcame it, and it’s something he can say to others. In fact, he created this song and music video during the lockdown to prevent coronavirus infections.

I don’t know if Hugo agrees with my view or not. But I see him as the heir to London punk. Not punk as a formality of conventional fashion and music, but punk as an attitude, questioning existing values and proposing a new vision. In order to achieve this, he creates all of his own music and music videos. The lyrical phrase “Fxxx Police” may sound confusing when you hear it for the first time, but if you put him in the context of punk, you’ll understand its true meaning. I think this is a metaphor for the message that “the only person who can judge whether something is really right or not, even if it is generally recognized as right, is you”.

‘No One Can Stop me’というフレーズに、私自身が励まされた。コロナウイルス感染症がもたらした社会的な変化によって、私はずいぶん疲れていたのだ。もちろん世界には、私より困難な状況に直面している方々が多いと思う。いずれにせよ、この曲はBloc Party‘One More Chance’のように、私を勇気づけ、立ち上がらせてくれた。

Hugo Hamletは才能にあふれたアーティストだ。彼はいくもの楽器－ギター、ベースギター、ピアノ、オーボエ―を演奏することができる。それに加えて、作曲と作詞もできる。舞台では役者としても活躍している。

彼の両親は著名なダンサーだ。彼は彼らの素晴らしい才能を引き継いだと思う。しかしながら、それだけではなかった。彼は、幼少の頃からパフォーマーとして表舞台に立つ両親を見ていた。それだけでなく、彼らの舞台裏での努力も知っていたのだ。役者の世界は激しい競争の社会だった。そこでは、他者とは違う個性を持ち、圧倒的な演技をすることができなければ、生き残ることができなかったのだ。そのため彼の両親もまた、パフォーマンスのために徹底的に技術を磨き続けていた。これこそが、彼が両親からから学んだ大切なことだった。

いかに才能があろうとも、楽器の演奏や作曲、発声や作詞、演劇をより良いものにしようと思うなら、そのための労力が必要だ。それを彼は幼少の頃から進んで引き受けた。忍耐力こそが彼の強みでもある。

彼はかつて、他のロンドンのユースとおなじようにバンドを組んでいた。いろいろな人と、いくつもバンドを組んだ。しかしながらどれもうまくいかなかった。圧倒的な美学と驚くべきストイックさをもつ彼にとっては、音楽活動においてメンバーとの安易な妥協はできなかったのだろう。

‘No One Can Stop me（誰にも僕を止められはしない）’。このフレーズは万事がうまくいっている人からは出てこない。物事がうまくいかなくて落ち込んでいる人からも出てこない。この言葉は何度も何度も人生で壁にぶつかり、それを乗り越えてきた人だからこそ、他の人々に発することのできる言葉だ。実際彼は、コロナウイルス感染症を防ぐためのロックダウンの最中、この曲とミュージックビデオを作りあげている。

私の見解にHugoが同意するか、私にはわからない。けれど、私は彼こそがロンドンのパンクの後継者だと捉えている。型にハマったファッションや音楽の形式的なパンクではなく、既存の価値観に疑問を持ち、新しいビジョンを提案するというアティテュードとしてのパンク。それを実現するために、彼は楽曲やミュージックビデオの制作をすべて彼自身で行っている。初めて聞くと戸惑うような歌詞のフレーズ”Fxxx Police”も、パンクという文脈で彼を捉え直せば、その真意を理解できるはずだ。これは”世間一般的には正しいと認識されていることであっても、それが本当に正しいかどうかを判断するのはあなた自身しかいない”というメッセージのメタファー（隠喩）だと思うのだ。

How did you try to make this song for that?
A
It’s about fun. It’s about doing whatever you want. We made the music video during lockdown by asking friends and fans to send videos of themselves dancing to the song. The artwork is pink because I love pink, pink is such a fun colour, don’t you think? Actually now looking at it it’s almost purple. Interesting!
