Jordan Gatesmith is a musician from Minneapolis Minnesota,the USA. He is the leader of punk project Howler as well as the lofi experimental pop project Wellness. He released records as Howler with Rough Trade between 2012-2014 until moving on to release several eps under the name Wellness as well as becoming a touring member of the band Peach Kelli Pop. ‘Say It Again’ is the first release under the Howler’s name in six years.

Howler is a band that was a hot topic about 10 years ago. In August 2011, they were selected as ’25 New Bands You’ll Love’ by British music media, NME. At the time, they performed at the Astro Hall in Harajuku and also participated in Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. Of course I went there, and bought their T-shirt and had them sign it.

Frontman Jordan Gatesmith started his musical career as a guitarist when he was 14 years old, and after several bands, formed his own band ‘Howler’ as a vocalist and guitarist. Geoff Travis, owner of Rough Trade Records, a long-established record label in the UK, liked them and signed a contract with them, which led to the success story mentioned above.

After that, the band went through several member changes and ended in 2017. Jordan started a project to explore pop sound called Wellness. He also worked as a support member for Peach Kelli Pop. He also participated in the Saint Laurent Paris Spring/Summer 2014 Show.

It was too abrupt. In April 2020, Howler’s new song ‘Say It Again’ was suddenly released. Moreover, there is only one song that lasts 1 minute and 38 seconds. In the past, the band’s sound was the coexistence of intensity and pop. However, this song is hard. My impression is that it’s closer to Numb.er’s ‘Price’ and early The Garden than Howler. In addition, this song features a surprisingly pleasing sound. So after listening to this, I feel like “I want to hear more of the current Howler sound”.

All of this was considered and intended by Jordan. First of all, in Apple Music, I found that the genre of this song is in the metal category. Metal is a genre that Jordan played in bands before Howler when he was a teenager. Of course, the vibrant performance was inherited from the Howler era. The comfort of the sound, as opposed to the playing, is benefited from the experience at Wellness, which is clearly exploring pop music.

And the lyrics had his strong message. In this situation where people can not go out because of the influence of the coronavirus, he uses his voice ‘for connection with people’ as the subject of the lyrics. This theme was a sublimation of the Escapism he had been searching for. He suddenly appeared and showed another world (escape route) to listeners. What’s more, Jordan dared to release this song in the name of Howler. If Howler releases a new work, it’s great for rock fans, isn’t it? In this less than two minute song, Jordan took into account the current social situation and condensed his career for his fans so far.

Howlerは約10年前に大きな話題を集めたバンドだ。2011年8月、彼らはthe UKの音楽メディアであるNMEの’25 New Bands You’ll Love’に選ばれ話題を呼び、2012年には’America Give Up (album)’をリリースした。彼らは当時、原宿アストロホールで単独公演を行い、Fuji Rock Festivalにも参加した。もちろん私は行って、物販のTシャツを買って、彼らにサインをしてもらった。

これらはすべてJordanが考え、意図したものであった。まずApple Musicにおいてこの曲のジャンルがメタルのカテゴリーに入っていることに気づいた。メタルは、JordangがHowler以前、10代の頃にバンドでやっていたジャンルでもある。もちろんパンク調の勢いのある演奏は、Howler時代から受け継がれたもの。楽曲と対照的なサウンドの心地良さは、明らかにポップミュージックを探求しているWellnessでの経験が役立っている。

そして歌詞には、彼の強いメッセージがあった。彼は、コロナウイルスの影響により人々が外出できない状況の中で、’人とのつながりを求める声’を歌詞の題材にした。このテーマは彼がこれまで探求し続けてきたEscapism（逃げること）を昇華したものであった。彼は、逃避した生活をせざるをえないリスナーの前に、パッとあらわれて、別の世界（逃げ道）を見せてくれたのである。しかも、Jordanはあえてこの曲を、Howlerの名義をリリースした。Howlerが新作をリリースしたら、ロックファンなら嬉しいもの。そうだと思いませんか？　この2分にも満たない1曲に、Jordanは今の社会情勢を考慮し、これまでの彼のファンのために、これまでの彼のキャリアを凝縮したのだ。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
Escapism is a big theme, and the act of writing, listening and responding to music is the greatest form of escapism for me. When I’m writing, I like to create personas and fabricate stories because it offers a huge amount of freedom.

Why did you choose Howler your band name ?
A
I chose that alias so long ago, I hardly even remember! All I know is that I wanted the project to be loud and charged, so I felt that a name like Howler suited that energy.

Why have you released a new song a after a long time?
A
Escapism. Like most everyone, I’ve been under quarantine for the last few months because of covid-19. Releasing new music feels like a good way to communicate with the world under these circumstances.

Who inspire you?
A
On a personal level I’m inspired by my friends Caleb and Jared who run Jungle Gym records, my friend Allie of Peach Kelli Pop, and my friend Yayo of Las Cruxes/Pastilla. All insanely talented individuals with amazing vision.
On a wider plane I’m inspired by Walter Van Beirendonck, Prince, Ryuichi Sakamoto, or anyone who has the ability to shapeshift or disregard genre.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this song?
A
‘Say It Again’ is a short and propulsive punk song. It has a sexual energy to it, explosively dealing with feelings of longing, jealousy, and desire. It’s about missing the touch and voice of someone.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
Musically, I set the song up on a lush droning synthesizer. It’s an almost gentle sound that contrasts with the urgency of the music. As the song moves forward, the vocal melody continually pushes upwards until it reaches a breaking point at which the song begins to disintegrate. I wanted the music to be an exercise in tension, never quite giving a full release, only hinting at it.

A

A
これもEscapism。多くの人と同様に、covid-19が原因で、僕は過去数か月間隔離されていた。新しい音楽をリリースすることは、このような状況下で世界とコミュニケーションをとるための良い方法のように感じたんだ。

A
個人的なレベルでは、 Jungle Gym recordsを運営している友人のCalebとJared、友人のPeach Kelli PopのAllie 、そしてLas Cruxes/Pastillaの友人のYayoに触発された。彼らは驚くべきビジョン持っている、素晴らしい才能のある人達だね。

A
音楽的には、ドローンシンセサイザーで曲を整えていった。音楽の急かすような勢いとは対照的に、穏やかなサウンドが特徴ででもある。曲が前に進むにつれて、ヴォーカルのメロディーは曲が崩壊し始めるブレークポイントに到達するまで上がっていく。音楽が緊張した状態にあって、完全なリリースではない、それをほのめかすにしようと思ったんだ。
