♪PROFILE♪
Hotel Lux is a 5 piece band from Portsmouth, England. They played in bands together at school and then they moved to East London for University and formed Hotel Lux. They made their debut by ‘Envoi'(single) in 2017, and released their latest work ‘Barstool Preaching'(ep) in April 2020.

Hotel Lux has released a long-awaited ep. They have performed as a support act for Fontaines D.C. and Shame, and had released singles and played live performances so far. For that, they are attracting attention as an expected band in the UK.
My first impression of this EP is ‘The Libertine meets The Rakes’. In other words, it is not the sound of the 90’s which is past the trend peak but the sound of the rock’n ‘roll / new wave & post-punk revival period of the 00’s. This trend is a new trend for the British rock band.
In fact, the music influenced by them is widespread, including punk (The Clash), pub rock (Dr. Feelgood), post punk (Gang Of Four), ska (Madness, The Specials), etc. These are British rock. Movements of the 00s led by The Libertines was revivals of these 70s and 80s Rock. Of course Hotel Lux also list The Libertines as a favourite. Furthermore, in this ep, with the inclusion of Dave McCraken as a producer, this work has a more British rock sound. He produced also ‘Emerald Classics’ by Swim Deep.
You can interpret them as a so-called cool British band from the band name borrowed from historical words, the difficult title of the ep, and artistic photos. But they go beyond that. They are part of the Pub Rock, a lineage of English alternative rock. The essence of this rock is to interact with others and to enjoy the present.
Pub Rock of pub means a public house. Pub Rock started in the 70’s with musicians playing in a small venue like a British pub. They were in contrast to hard rock and progressive rock, which were becoming commercial rock at the time. They were characterized by simple composition of songs and candid words that bring empathy. Representatives are Dr. Feelgood and Elvis Costello. Their styles led to the subsequent rise of punk.
I hear that British pubs are currently in a very difficult situation due to the effects of the Coronavirus. However, it is a culture of pubs that has overcome many hardships up to now. I just pray for their new development in a new world coexisting with Coronavirus.
In anyway, in Los Angels and New York excellent rock is stably produced , and in Paris and Vancouver, new rock scene is born, and also in London indie/alternative rock movements are happning again like 00s. Hotel Lux is a one of the leaders of this movements in London. Among this ep, the previously released single ‘Tabloid Newspaper’ is such a great song that it wouldn’t be strange to be selected for a Hedi show.

この作品に対する私の第一印象は、’The Libertine meets The Rakes’だ。つまり、トレンドがピークを超えた90年代のサウンドではなく、00年代におけるロックンロール／ニューウェーブ＆ポストパンクリバイバル期のサウンドである。この流れは、英国ロックバンドの新しい流れとして目が離せない。
実際、彼らに影響を受けた音楽が、パンク（The Clash）、パブロック（Dr.Feelgood）、それからポストパンク（Gang Of Four）、スカ（Madness、The Specials）など多岐に渡りつつも、非常にthe UK的な潮流にあることだ。70,80年代のリバイバルこそが、The Libertinesが主導した00年代のムーブメントでもある。もちろん彼らもThe Libertinesをファイバリットに挙げている。さらに本作では、Swim Deepの’Emerald Classics’を手がけたをDave McCrakenをプロデューサーとして迎えたことで、よりthe UK的なロックサウンドが際立っている。
歴史的な言葉から拝借したバンド名や小難しいepのタイトル、アートな写真から、彼らをいわゆるクールなブリティッシュバンドとして解釈することもできる。しかし、彼らはその枠にはおさまらない。彼らはパブロック、すなわちthe UK流のオルタナティヴロックの系譜に連なっている。その真髄は他者との交流であり、今を楽しむことでもある。
そもそもパブロックのパブはパブリックハウスを意味する。パブロックは、70年代に英国のパブのような小さい会場で、ミュージシャン達が演奏したことでスタート。それらは当時、産業ロックと化していた、ハードロックやプログレシッヴロックと対照的でもあった。彼らはシンプルな楽曲、共感をもたらす率直な言葉が特徴的である。代表的な存在は、Dr.FeelgoodやElvis Costello。それらは、その後のパンクの勃興へとつながっていく。
現在、コロナウイルスの影響によりthe UKのパブは非常に厳しい状況だと聞く。しかしながら、これまでの幾度の苦難を乗り越えてきた文化だ。コロナウイルスと共存する新しい世界において、彼らの新たな発展を祈るばかりである。
いずれにせよ、安定的に優れたロックを輩出するロサンゼルスやニューヨーク、そして新しいロックの発信源となっているパリやバンクーバーとともに、ロンドンで00年代のように再び起こっているロックムーブメントに目が離せなくなっている。中でも、このHotel Luxはその筆頭だ。先行リリースされていた’Tabloid Newspaper’はいつHediのショーに抜擢されてもおかしくないほどの楽曲だと思う。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
We tell stories in our old songs. Talking about people and characters. In our new songs we explore themes of loneliness, identity and personal experience. Living in London studying /working and partying.

Why did you choose Hotel Lux your band name?
A
Hotel Lux was a safe house for exiled communists during The Soviet Union. We are all interested in history, especially The Soviet Union / World War 2 and Cold War history. Also it’s a cool name, right?

Who inspire you?
A
We all like different music. We never agree on favourite bands! Lewis(Vocal) grew up listening to Ska (Madness and The Specials) because his dad was a skinhead. With ‘Barstool Preaching’ we made playlists with songs that inspired us. Pub-Rock bands such as Dr Feelgood inspire us musically – Wilko Johnson’s iconic guitar riffs. Lyrically Lewis is influenced by Philip Larkin and more.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this ep?
A
We wanted to be more fun and happy than we have in the past. ‘The Last Hangman’ was very moody and we wanted to show a different side to us. These songs are mainly about having fun. Many bands are being very serious and angry at the moment but we’re not serious anymore.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
We focused on chorus and melody. We wanted people to be able to sing along and have fun at our shows. We also wanted to have more fun at our shows. We didn’t control ourselves musically and we experimented. We went beyond our comfort zone. Dave McCraken produced the ep and helped us find the fun side of our music. We tried different tempos and sounds.

A
Hotel Luxとは、ソビエト連邦の時代、追放された共産主義者のための安全な家なんだ。僕らはみんな、歴史、特にソビエト連邦の第二次世界大戦と冷戦の歴史に興味があります。それからさ、かっこいい名前だと思わない？

誰があなたに影響を与えましたか？
A
僕らはみんな違う音楽が好きなんだ。メンバーの好きなバンドが一緒ということはなくってさ！ ヴォーカルのLewisは父親がスキンヘッドだったのでスカ（MadnessとTh Specials）を聴いて育ってきた。 僕らはSpotifyで、レコードを作る際に影響を受けた好きな曲を集めたプレイリストを作ってもいるよ。Dr Feelgoodなどのパブロックバンドは、音楽的に僕らに影響を与えている。特に、 Wilko Johnsonの象徴的なギターリフだね。歌詞の面では、LewisはPhilip Larkin（フィリップ・ラーキン／イギリスの詩人）も大きいね。

このEPを通じてリスナーに伝えたい最も重要なことは何ですか？
A
これまで以上に楽しく幸せになれるような作品にしたかった。’The Last Hangman’は悲しい雰囲気だったので、別の面を見せたかった。新作の曲は主に楽しむことについて描かれている。現在、多くのバンドは非常にシリアスであったり、怒っているが、僕らはもう深刻ではないんだ。

そのためにどのように曲を作ろうとしたのですか？
A
コーラスとメロディーに焦点を当てている。人々が一緒に歌ったり、ショーで楽しんだりできるようにしたかったんだ。それから、ショーをもっと楽しみたいと思ってもいた。音楽的に自分自身をコントロールするのではなく、実験をしたんだ。そうすることで、自分達のこれまでの快適ゾーンを超えることができた。 （Swim Deepの’Emerald Classics’らを手がけた）Dave McCrakenがepをプロデュースしてくれて、僕らの音楽の面白さを見つけてくれたよ。さまざまなテンポとサウンドを試しているんだ。
