Girl Skin is a 6-member band formed mainly by singer-songwriter Sid Simons. They are based in Brooklyn, New York, and are attracting attention for their folk sound and delicate artistic expression. In April 2020, They just released the 1st album ‘Shade Is On The Other Side’, including the songs of the preceding single songs such as ‘Forever & Always’. And Sid is also involved in another band called Beechwood.

Girl Skin’s debut album ‘Shade Is On The Other Side’ has finally been released. This work contains 11 songs, including George Harrison, which are reminiscent of the good old 70s folk songs. Their organic and tenderness sounds are very fresh to the digital age. At the same time, it should be mentioned that it is the latest sound. Dan Lyons in Margate the UK, Oracle Sisters based in Paris, Brion Starr in New York, and more recently, artists who were inspired by Glam Rock and Folk Rock in the 1970s have been prominent. And they are also linked to the fashion Hedi Slimane proposes in Celine.

When listening through the album, not only folk rock but a wide range of musical influences are felt. For example, ‘Bite Real Hard’ sounds like Beck and Girls, and ‘You’re a Freak’ sounds like The Velvet Underground. And, the interlude in ‘She Said’ recorded in the final stage is wonderfully dramatic like the climax scene of the movie.

Sid Simons, who is also a core member of the band, is also active as a model with his cool looks. And It is this work that he realized his vision for a long time. Of particular note is his obsession with perfection.In contrast to the organic-sounding sound, Sid ponders every detail of the band. In terms of visuals, they chose retro yellow as the symbol color, produced a music video that looks like a 70’s world view, and created album cover art as if it were a movie poster.In terms of music, it’s easy to imagine that they spend a lot of time arranging as well as composing. The reason is that in addition to the complexity of adding stringed instruments to the band formation, they are aiming for high quality with the original songs. The work of exploring the light (goal) in the dark must have been a very pressure-consuming job. Still, Sid is able to release a cool and perfect work without making the listener feel the pain of such a shadow.

視覚的な面においては、レトロなイエローをシンボルカラーに選び、70年代の世界観を演出したミュージックビデオを制作し、まるで映画のポスターのようなアルバムのカバーアートを作り上げた。楽曲面においては、彼らが作曲はもちろんアレンジにも相当に時間をかけていることは容易に想像できる。その理由はバンド編成に弦楽器が加わることでの複雑さに加え、オリジナルの楽曲で高い質を目指しているからだ。暗闇の中で、光（ゴール）を模索するような制作は、非常にプレッシャーがかかる仕事だったに違いない。それでいてリスナーにはそんな影の苦労を微塵も感じさせずに、あくまでクールに完璧な作品をリリースできるのがSidなのだ。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
I’m not sure this record has a specific theme. But it does explore areas of love and romance and loss and outsiders.

Why did you choose Girl Skin your band name & yellow your symbol color?
A
Well it’s the most beautiful thing on the planet, so I thought I want my band to be named after the most beautiful thing on the planet.
I’ve always thought it’s just as important to see music as much as hear it. And the color yellow just looks like our sound and it also constantly follows us around, so we adopted it as the color scheme us.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this album?
A
Well I just want the record to be able to bring joy and life into peoples homes. Especially in these crazy times. As long as we’re putting smiles on peoples faces that’s all that matters right now.

RECOMMEND
I found out about Girl Skin two years ago online when they released their first single ‘Darling’. The track stayed with me for a long time with a timeless melody and anthemic chorus that could’ve featured on a 70’s George Harrison record. While also feeling new and non paradigmatic enough to be deemed distinguishable from other artists.
They also have an appealing aesthetic that matches their unostentatious persona and sound – with the release of their new album ‘Shade Is On The Other Side’ – these claims are only backed up by more gentle, pretty tracks with lyrics to match. Though the lyrics on the album don’t often alter from the topic of love, they are written in a way that isn’t too cliched and relatable to a young audience. Their signature stereo panned acoustic guitar sound gifts to their songs a luscious, expansive grandeur in which the violin weaves in and out of leaving space for the embellishment of their vocal melodies to take over. While there is no shortage of softly penned ballads there is also a more ethereal rock side to the album however, often prevalent towards the end of songs as they build to a forte. Tracks such as ‘Soft Gun’ and ‘Holy Fool’ serve as indications to lead singer Sid Simons’ more rock and roll influenced roots compared to simpler folk rock songs like ‘The Path’. The band seem to possess a real compositional quality and together they have made a really beautiful album in ‘Shade Is On The Other Side’.
