♪PROFILE♪

Dan is Born in Margate, Kent, the UK. Margate is east of London. This city is a seaside resort for old Londoners. He is also famous as a drummer for bands like Fat White Family and Phobophobes, but he is also a songwriter. He has been active in London, but moved to his hometown of Kent and started a solo project in 2017.

Well, this time, I will introduce Dan Lyons from the UK. He is also a friend of La Femme, who leads the Paris scene, because he is based in seaside town Margate near France.

‘Special People’ (EP), which contains 5 songs, includes the cover song ‘Waiting For The Man’ from the legendary band The Velvet Underground from New York, but it is 100% pure UK wherever you listen. The Libertines’s Peter Doherty is another artist in the UK’s traditional rock lineage. If you listen to Dan’s song, you should understand why Pete has chosen Dan as a tour support act. I imagined “Pete simply fell in love with Dan’s music”. Also, we understand that the theme of this work is “visiting in September” when looking at the explanation on Bandcamp. So this work feels sad and very nice.

These songs are a compilation of old and new works. He told me that he played and recorded guitar, bass, drums, and of course vocal. One of the most outstanding works is the aforementioned “Waiting For The Man”. I thought, “This song is nice with a gram-like, sparkling sound”. So when I asked Dan about this cover, he answered “it was a cover of the 1977 version of David Bowie and Lou Reed”. With that behind that, I asked a rock friend to listen to this song. He said, ‘It sounds like David Bowie’s Heros’.
I think the essential of this song is the guitar. And this cover was a good copy of the original guitar. Later I was surprised to find that the guitarist John Cale of The Velvet Underground was actually from UK. In other words, for Dan, the cover of this song is sounded in the context of the UK rock heritage, although it is a song from the NY band.
Then, the jacket photo of this work was taken by Cindy Sasha, who is working on Vivienne Westwood related film at the hotel in Margate. From that, it seems that he is quite conscious about re-presenting UK rock. That’s why I guess it covered the song of The Velvet Underground. Also, this cover has a great music video so please check it out.

Finally, I will introduce Hedi and his episode. First meeting was that Hedi visited his live. The next day, Hedi invited Dan to CELINE to take his pictures. At that time, they talked about Peter Doherty.
This Pete is a subject that Hedi has repeatedly photographed around the DIOR HOMME era. When an interviewer asked, “Who is the best person for DIOR HOMME?”, Hedi replied Pete. In 2005, Hedi had released a photo book called ‘LONDON BIRTH OF CULT’ with Pete as the theme. Pete in the mid-00s was tall with a baby face and was also associated with Kate Moss. Both public and private were very good. Listen to his band Baby Shambles ‘ Fuck Forever ‘. It is a destructive masterpiece that remains in the history of rock released in 2005.
However, Pete was gradually swallowed by drugs and barely revived, but rehabilitation was not easy. At the same time, he no longer became the subject of Hedi. Considering compliance, no one can blame Hedi even if he didn’t shoot. So after more than a decade, Pete’s topic in Hedi’s conversation has made me realize that he still cares about Pete. He may also appreciate Dan as Pete’s musical successor because he is also a great aesthetic.

さて今回はUKから、Dan Lyonsを紹介します。フランスに近いMargateというUKの海辺の町を彼は本拠地としていることもあってか、パリのシーンを牽引するLa Femmeの友人でもあります。

5曲を収録した’Special People’（EP）は、New Yorkの伝説的なバンドThe Velvet Undergroundのカバー曲’Waiting For The Man’を含みながらも、どこを聴いても純度100%のUK感。The LibertinesのPete DohertyもまたUKのトラディショナルなロックの系譜に連なるアーティストです。もしDanの曲を聴けば、PeteがDanをツアーのサポートアクトに抜擢した理由も理解できるはずです。”PeteはシンプルにDanの音楽に惚れたのだろうな”と思わず想像しちゃいますね。また本作のテーマはBandcampのアルバムの解説を見ると’9月に訪れること’をモチーフにしているようです。作品全体が憂いを帯びた感じがして、とても素敵です。

これらの曲達は新旧の作品をコンパイルしたものだそう。しかもギター、ベース、ドラムス、そしてもちろんボーカルという全てのパートを彼自身が演奏して録音しています。作品の中でもやはり秀逸なのは前述の’Waiting For The Man’のカバーですね。私は”この曲はグラムっぽい、キラキラしたサウンドで素敵だなぁ”と思っていました。そこでDanにこのカバーについて伺ったら、なんと’1977年のDavid BowieとLou Reedのバージョン’のカバーだったそうです。その背景を内緒にして、私はロック好きの知人にこの曲を聴かせたました。すると彼は’まるでDavid BowieのHerosみたいなサウンドだね’と言い得て妙のコメントをいただきました。
また、この曲の要はギターだと思いますが、このカバーはオリジナルをうまくコピーできているなと。後に私はThe Velvet UndergroundのギタリストJohn Caleも実はイギリス出身だったと知り、驚きましたね。つまり彼にとってはこの曲のカバーは、NYのバンドの曲ではあるものの、あくまでUKのロックの遺産という文脈で鳴らしていたのですから。
それから、この作品のジャケット写真はMargateのホテルでVivienne Westwood関連の撮影を手がけるCindy Sashaに撮よって撮影されたそうです。そのことからも彼がUKロックをリプレゼント（代表する／象徴する）するということに対してかなり意識的、だからこそ、The Velvet Undergroundの曲をカバーしたのだと推測されます。また、このカバーはミュージックビデオも素晴らしいので、ぜひご覧ください。

最後はHediと彼のエピソードを紹介します。出会いのきっかけはHediが彼のライブに訪れたこと。その翌日にはHediはCELINEにDanを招待して彼の撮影をしたそうです。その際、二人はPeter Dohertyについて語ったのだそう。
このPeteといえば、HediがDIOR HOMME時代を中心に繰り返し撮影していた被写体です。あるインタビュアが “Dior hommeが一番似合う人は誰ですか？”との質問をした際、HediはPeteと答えていたほどでした。2005年にHediはPeteを主題とした’LONDON BIRTH OF CULT’という写真集までリリースしているほどです。00年代中盤のPeteは童顔ですらりと背が高く、当時はKate Mossとも付き合っていました。公私ともに絶好調だったのです。ぜひ彼のバンドBaby Shamblesの’Fuck Forever’をお聴きください。2005年にリリースされたロック史上に残る破壊的な名曲です。
しかしながらPeteは次第にドラッグに飲みこまれ、かろうじて生還したたものの、更生は容易でなかったようです。それと並行してか、いつからか彼がHediの被写体となることもなくなりました。コンプライアンスのことを考えると、撮影をしなかったとしてもHediを責めることは誰にもできませんよね。だから10年以上の時を経て、Hediの会話にPeteの話題が出たことは、彼が今なおPeteのことを気にかけていることが察せられて、やはり嬉しいですね。そしてまた素晴らしい審美眼（審美聴というべきか）を持つHediのことだから、DanをPeteの音楽的な後継者としても評価しているのかもしれません。

Sometimes I write the words on paper in my Moleskine, and hope that they fit with the music, and sometimes I write the music first. It depends on the day. The artwork for the EP was taken at The Walpole Bay Hotel in Margate by Cindy Sasha, who is a photographer who usually works with Vivienne Westwood…

The cover of ’Waiting For The Man’ is great.I like John Kale (who is guitarist of The Velvet Underground）. So I judge strictly the cover of them.But your cover is really good.How did you record?
A
I did everything – guitar,bass,drums and vocals.

He came to our gig at Le Pop Up Du Label, and invited us to the Celine headquarters to take some photos the next day!

We talked about music, about Margate and Peter Doherty (who he shot many moons ago, and who I’ve just come off tour with…) and our friends in Paris. He’s a lovely man.
