‘PHILOSOPHER’S CALLING’
♪PROFILE♪
Crack Cloud members are from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. A band of seven members (as of November 2018) formed mainly by Zach Choy of Vocal and Drums. In 2018, they released ‘Crack Cloud’, a compilation of two EPs. The song ‘Philosopher ’s Calling’ was selected as the soundtrack for the CELINE MEN ’S AW 2019-20 COLLECTION show and campaign, and has gained worldwide attention. In addition, they call themselves MIXED MEDIA COLLECTIVE and actively work on video production as well as music. In 2019, ‘The Next fix’ will be released in May as ‘Pain Olympics’ series, and ‘Crackin Up’ in June. The release of album containing them is expected. Some members are also active in a band called NOV3L. They are praised for their guitar sound reminiscent of the 80s British postpunk band Josef K.

Crack Cloudのメンバー達は、カナダの都市バンクーバー（Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada）出身。Vocal兼DrumsのZach Choyを中心に結成された、7人編成（2018年11月時点）の大所帯バンド。2018年には2枚のEPをコンパイルした作品’ Crack Cloud’をリリース。同作収録曲’Philosopher’s Calling’がCELINE MEN’S AW 2019-20 COLLECTIONのショーとキャンペーンののサウンドトラックとして起用され世界的な注目を集める。またMIXED MEDIA COLLECTIVEと自称する彼らは、音楽のみならず映像制作にも積極的に取り組む。2019年には映像作品’Pain Olympics’シリーズとして、5月に’The Next fix’、6月には’Crackin Up’を次いで公開。それらを含むアルバムのリリースが期待される。また、メンバーの一部は、NOV3Lというバンドでも活動中。彼らは80年代イギリスのポストパンクバンドJosef Kを彷彿とさせるギターサウンドで評価されている。

Thank you very much for waiting! This time, I will introduce Crack Cloud, which attracted much attention by providing music to CELINE MEN ’S AW 2019-20 COLLECTION.
Before starting the band introduction, let’s talk about the show first. This collection is an update on the UK youth fashion called Teddy (also known as Teds) of the 1950s, which Hedi modernized at SAINT LAURET PARIS MEN’S AW 2015-16 COLLECTION was.
The AW 19-20 collection incorporates the fashion of the 1980s UK youth movement Post punk / New wave. Specific examples include Joy Division, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Cure, and Bauhaus. The influences of these bands were symbolically expressed in the color of black-based clothes and hairstyles. Ian Cutis-like short hair, short bangs / medium with a long neck, Mash Bob, The Jesus And Mary Chain-like volume hair.
The feature was not only the short length Not Skinny silhouette bottoms, but also the variety of coats and their wearing. This collection, which looks like a coat catalog, has changed the recent trend of sporty and casual wear. Hedi himself seems to have been continuously researching the shape of the coat and how to wear it. This time, the layering of the coat, jacket and shirt was as beautiful as a Japanese kimono. It also featured a well-spaced silhouette such as coats, riders and jackets. This silhouette seems to function not only as a Hedi fan, but also as a saucer for the Demna Gvasalia fan who handles BALECIAGA / VETEMENTS, which has led the fashion scene in recent years. As an aside, the reappearance of the Bauhaus-like geometric knit was also good. This has repeatedly appeared since SAINT LAURENT rive gauche, SAINT LAURENT PARIS era.
Despite the fact that it was titled ‘A LONDON DIARY POLAROIDS OF THE BRITISH YOUTH’, I was very interested in the creation of Crack Cloud from Canada for music production, James Chance from US for special guests, and collaborating artists David Hominal from France, Anneli Henriksson and Cody Defranco from the US and he chose Berlin, Deutsch as the shooting location for the campaign. Although some of the models were from the UK, the main elements of the collection were solidified by artists from other countries. Of course, Hedi has always loved UK bands and continues to document them. So, perhaps the reason for the selection is that this theme is focused on the Post punk / New wave of the 80s UK, and to embody that mood, there was a better artist in the other country than the UK artist.
In addition to being selected by Hedi, Crack Cloud is currently highly regarded by both UK media influencers such as Gurdian and So Young Magazine. They are also actively involved in video production and are now producing a series titled ‘Pain Olympics’.
Back in their career, Zach from Vocal and Drums made the early band in 2015,16. It seems that they copied punk bands and bands that were popular at that time. However, from the very beginning Zach has produced a great deal of music at home and improved his skills as a composer. His political thoughts and philosophy have been around since then, leading to a work that integrates current music and video.
It seems that the Canadian community has an influence on the formation of the band. It seems that not fixing the band members too much has a positive effect on the work. In addition, the relationship between members is deep, and members who are related or who have lived together are also in the band, which leads to mutual trust. Because of such soil, it seems that manpower / skills to realize video works are available. You can see it when you watch the video, but if you want to do that quality with the band’s DIY, it’s hard.

大変お待たせしました！ 今回はCELINE MEN’S AW 2019-20 COLLECTIONへの楽曲提供で話題を集めたCrack Cloudをご紹介します。
バンド紹介に入る前にまずはショーについて触れておきましょう。本コレクションは、HediがSAINT LAURET PARIS MEN’S AW 2015-16 COLLECTIONにてモダナイズドした、1950年代のTeddy（別名Tedsとしても有名）と呼ばれたUKユースのファッションをアップデートしたものでした。
AW 19-20のコレクションでは、1980年代のUKユースのムーブメントPost punk/New waveのファッションを取り入れました。具体的にはJoy Division、The Jesus And Mary Chain、The Cure、Bauhausなどなど。それらのバンドの影響が、ブラック主体の服の色や、ヘアスタイルに象徴的に表現されていました。Ian Cutis風のショートヘアや、短め前髪・襟足長めのミディアム、マッシュ・ボブ、The Jesus And Mary Chain風のボリュームヘアなどですね。
特徴は、短い丈のNot Skinnyなシルエットのボトムスだけではなく、コートのバリエーションの多さとその着こなしでした。まるでコートのカタログのような本コレクションは、ダウンはじめとしたスポーティやカジュアルに傾倒としていた近年のトレンドを大きく変えるものでした。Hedi自身はコートの形や着こなし方を継続的に研究し続けていたようです。それが今回、コートとジャケットそしてシャツの重ね着が、まるで日本の着物のように美しかったです。また、コートをはじめライダースやジャケットなど、ほどよくゆとりのあるシルエットも特徴でした。このシルエットは、Hediファンのみならず、近年のファッションシーンを牽引していたBALECIAGA/VETEMENTSを手がけるDemna Gvasaliaファンの受け皿としても機能しそうです。余談ですが、Bauhaus着用風の幾何柄ニット（Gerometrivc Pattern Knit）の再登場もよかったです。これはSAINT LAURENT rive gauche、SAINT LAURENT PARIS時代から繰り返し登場しています。
非常に興味深かったのが、’A LONDON DIARY POLAROIDS OF THE BRITISH YOUTH’と題されていたにもかかわらず、楽曲制作にはCanadaのCrack Cloud、スペシャルゲストにはUSのJames Chance、コラボレーションしたアーティストはFranceのDavid Hominal、USのAnneli HenrikssonとCody Defranco、そして極めつけはキャンペーンの撮影地にはBerlin,Deutschを選んでいたことです。Walt DiscoのメンバーなどモデルにUK出身を入れてはいたものの、Londonをテーマに掲げながらも、コレクションを構成する主要な要素は他国のアーティストで固めていたのです。しかもHediはこれまではもちろん現在進行形でUKのバンドを愛好し、そのドキュメントを続けているのだから明らかに意図があってのことでしょう。この理由について私自身は、彼の掲げる今回のテーマは80年代UKのPost punk/New waveにフォーカスしており、そのムードを体現するには、UK出身のアーティストよりも適材なアーティストが他国にいたというシンプルな理由ではないかと推察しています。

キャリアを遡ると、2015,16年Vocal兼DrumsのZachが初期のバンドを作りました。彼らはその頃、パンクバンドや当時流行っていたバンドをコピーしていたようです。しかしながらZachは当初から相当な楽曲を自宅で制作し、コンポーザーとしてのスキルを高めていきました。また、彼の政治的な思想や哲学は当時からあり、現在の音楽と映像が一体化した作品につながっています。
大所帯のバンド編成についてはカナダならではのコミュニティが影響がしているようです。バンドのメンバー固定化しすぎないことが、作品に良い影響を与えているようです。また、メンバー間の関係は深く、血縁関係にあるメンバーや、一緒に暮らしたことのあるメンバーもバンド内におり、互いの信頼感につながっています。そのような土壌があるからこそ、映像作品を実現してしまうというマンパワー／スキルが揃っているのでしょう。映像を見てもらえたらわかりますが、あの質をバンドのDIYでやろうと思ったら、きついですもんね。

What is the theme you are looking for through making music?
A
Fluidity of the human mind and spirit.

Why did you choose Crack Cloud as your band name?
A
Because it invokes the visceral, sometimes erratic nature of our aesthetic and ideas.

Who inspire you?
A
People that overcome stigma. Artists that challenge normative constructs.
We get our inspiration from anime,dark fantasy,the exploitation genre of the 80s,and transgressive fiction.
We take influence from a lot of different anime,from cosmetics to philosophy,to the way we edit our videos. We are releasing the next video in our ‘Pain Olympics’ series and you will be able to see more of the influence that anime has on us.

We met Hedi and his team in London, he came to a performance of ours.

Celineのクリエイティブチームと何度も話し合いをしながら制作していった。

Hediとはどのように出会いましたか？
A
彼とチームにロンドンで会って、それから我々のパフォーマンスにも来てくれた。
注：おそらくHediはCrack Cloudにコレクションを依頼すると決めた後で、（クリエイティブチームからの打診を経て）、バンドにチームとともにロンドンで落ち合い、それから演奏とポートレート撮影などを行ったと思われます。つまりライブ撮影→コレクション楽曲依頼とは逆の流れですね。

CELINEのショウが終わった後にはどのように感じましたか？
A
非常に満足のいく経験だったし、ファッション界に対して素晴らしい（我々の）紹介ができたと思っているよ。
