Robbie Wood is from the Thames Valley countryside, outside of London. He started playing guitar at age 8, and has been obsessed ever since, doing whatever he can musically.  He had a band called Hypnotized when he lived in Brighton, around the same time in 2013 he started Cardinal Fang. In 2018 He joined Swim Deep, and they immediately made a album ‘Emerald Classics’.Right now Cardinal Fang consists of Robbie Wood, Jasper (who produces Cardinal Fang) on keyboards and drum machine and Chris Salliss on bass.

British musician Robbie Wood is also well known as a model that has been appointed to shows by Hedi Slimane for many years. Robbie has participated in shows of two brands (Saint Laurent Paris and Celine), few models have been so long term. Another example is Brandon from Sands. So, for Hedi, Robbie must be one of the core of his worldview. 

In addition, he surprisingly joined the UK alternative rock band Swim Deep in 2018. Robbie being friends with bassist Cavan McCarthy, fitted into the band nicely. At that time, Swim Deep was in a difficult situation as a band, due to two members leaving the group. However, in ‘Emerald Classics’ (album), which was created when Robbie joined, they succeeded in creating a work of a different dimension from their world. Robbie who participated as a guitarist would have a big influence on this. 

So if you like fashion or alternative rock, you must pay attention Robbie Wood. His solo project is Cardinal Fang. However his work is quite different from the songs of the artists used in Hedi’s show and the songs of Swim Deep. Cardinal Fang is completely Robbie’s world. The music is first demoed by him at home and then finished by the power of his friends help. So the work is largely the product of his senses and thoughts. For listeners, there are only two options:  Do you love his world or not?  That’s all. Hedi and Swim Deep have nothing to do with it.　　

Cardinal Fang has released his fourth album ‘One More Strange Island’ in 2019. The title is borrowed from the 12th chapter of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ (ancient Greek epic). He is clearly attracted to the idea of’ ‘Reconnect. This work is also a work that combines several viewpoints. The motif of the work is the aforementioned Greek myth. The artwork is a landscape on the Gower Peninsula in South Wales where he spent his holidays as a child. And the fact that he has changed his house and kept moving has also influenced his work. Originally from the UK, he has lived in the United States, several parts of the United Kingdom, and has stayed in Japan. It seems that those experiences are meta-recognized by using psychogeography. In this work, It mixes myth and nature, history and personal experience, the real world movement and the academic perspective that captures it, and love. They are connected together and cannot be separated.

His sound has a similar tendency. He might be able to describe his song in different words, such as New Wave, pop, dance music, and ’60-’70s Revival. However, no word, no category, can describe his music well. For me, it sounds a lot different from his sound, but somehow I remembered the legendary British New Wave band The Fall. There may be something in common with the sound space, the easy-to-hear bassline, and the impressive voice. 

True, Robbie’s voice is unique and attractive. First of all, I recommend the song ‘Cycles’ in the middle of the album where you can enjoy his beautiful and pleasant voice.

このように、ファッションまたはオルタナティブロックが好きな方であれば、注目せざるをえないのがRobbie Woodという男である。その彼のソロプロジェクトが、Cardinal Fangだ。しかしながら、彼の作品は、Hediのショーで使われるようなアーティスト達の曲とも、Swim Deepの曲ともかなり異なる。Cardinal Fangは完全にRobbieの世界だ。音楽は、まず彼によって家でデモが作られ、続いて彼の友人の力によって仕上げられる。つまり作品は主に、彼の感覚と思考の産物なのだ。リスナーにとってCardinal Fangにある選択肢は、彼の世界を好きになるのか、または、ならないのか？　 それだけだ。そこにはHediもSwim Deepも関係がない。

Cardinal Fangは、2019年に4枚目のアルバム’One More Strange Island’をリリースしている。タイトルはホメーロスの’オデュッセイア’（古代ギリシャの長編叙事詩）の第12歌からを拝借されている。彼は明らかに’Reconnect（再接続）’というアイディアに惹かれている。この作品もまた、いくつかの視点が結合されてできた作品である。作品のモチーフは前述のギリシャ神話。アートワークは彼が幼少期に休日によく訪れていたという南ウェールズのガワー半島の風景である。そして彼が住まいを変え、移動し続けていることも作品に影響を与えている。the UK出身の彼は、アメリカやthe UKのいくつかの地域で生活し、日本に滞在したこともある。それらの経験を、どうやら心理地理学を用いて、メタ認識しているようでもある。それからガールフレンドの存在も大きいようだ。つまり、神話と自然、歴史と個人的体験、リアルな世界の移動とそれを捉える学問的視点、そして愛が、この作品には混ざっている。それらは一つにつながっていて、腑分けすることができない。

彼のサウンドにも同じような傾向がある。彼の楽曲を、ニューウェーヴやポップス、ダンスミュージック、’60-’70sリヴァイバルといった、いろいろな言葉で形容することができるかもしれない。しかしながら、どのような言葉、どのカテゴリーでも彼の音楽をうまく形容することができない。私自身は、彼のサウンドとはかなり異なるが、どういうわけかthe UKの伝説的なニューウェーヴバンドThe Fallを思い出した。音の空間や聞き取りやすいベースライン、印象的な声にいくつか共通するものがあるのかもしれない。

声。たしかに、Robbieの声は個性的で、魅力的である。私はまず、彼の美しく、心地良い声を楽しむことができるアルバム中盤の曲’Cycles’をおすすめする。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
I am constantly trying to get inspired, by books, architecture, nature, music etc etc. ‘One More Strange Island’ and the follow up.’The screen game’ are very influenced by Psychogeography (an exploration of urban environments that emphasizes playfulness and ‘drifting’), and my own re-connection with the U.K. after a long time spent living in the US, and a bit in Japan! So moving to London for the first time and waking around all day was very inspiring. And also ‘The men in suits’, people in power, darkness of the mind, cults, I always seem to write about! I’m no conspiracist but I love to rebel.

Why did you choose Cardinal Fang your solo project name ?
A  
My name (Robert Wood)  is quite boring, so I wanted an alter ego, something exciting, and also to remain anonymous (at first). Cardinal Fang is taken from the Monty Python episode ‘The Spanish Inquisition”‘, where Terry Gilliam plays Cardinal Fang, his name is mentioned once and it stuck with me. At first it was a character but I now write as me.

Who inspires you?
A 
Right now artists like Broadcast, Haruomi Hosono, Martin Newell, XTC, Brian Wilson. I love baroque pop at the moment, that is my plan for the next album! My band mates in swim deep inspire me. I’m also always very inspired by Federico Fellini films, and my girlfriend.

About ‘One More Strange Island ‘ (album)

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this album?
A
Trying to make sense of this mad world, but getting confused in the process ha ha. It depends on the song I guess! The title ‘One More Strange Island’ is the title of chapter 12 from The Odyssey by Homer. I was very inspired by this epic when writing the album, and I got to see some lovely Ancient Greek sites in the summer. I will give the music a few more years and then become an archeologist, that’s how it works.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
Firstly, the artwork was made by my brother, Dave, who is a great illustrator! It depicts a scene in Gower, Wales where we both grew up. This theme of childhood is important as a lot of the album is about re-connection, to nature and love, and also the opposite…some of the songs are about madness and disconnection. Lyrics are important to me, although I tend to improvise so it sometimes obscures the song. I made the album mostly at home, then got my friend Jack Trotman to drum on it, then took it to my bandmate Jasper to produce it, then we added synths and vocals at his house, he is a wizz, check out his project Bubble People! We had a lot of fun making it.

Cardinal Fangをソロプロジェクト名に選んだのはなぜですか？
A
僕の本名（Robert Wood）はつまらないので、分身であり、エキサイティングなもの、そして（当初は）匿名のままにしておきたかったんだ。Cardinal Fangは、テリー・ギリアムがファング枢機卿を演じる英国のコメディ番組’空飛ぶモンティパイソン’のエピソード’スペイン宗教裁判’に由来する。最初はキャラクターとして用いていたけれど、今では自分のことのように使っているよ。

誰があなたに影響を与えていますか？
A
今だと、Broadcast、 Haruomi Hosono、Martin Newell、 XTC、 Brian Wilsonなどのアーティストだね。今はバロックポップが大好きなんだ。それが次のアルバムの計画でもある！ バンド仲間であるSwim Deepからもいつもインスパイアを受けている。あと、いつもフェデリコ・フェリーニの映画やガールフレンドからもね。

A
この狂った世界を理解しようとしているけれど、その過程では混乱がつきもの。それから曲によって違うとも思う！　タイトル’One More Strange Island’は、ホメーロスの’オデュッセイア’（古代ギリシャの長編叙事詩）の第12歌がモチーフなんだ。アルバムを制作している時、僕はこの叙事詩にとても刺激を受け、夏には素敵な古代ギリシャのサイトをいくつか見たりもした。僕は音楽をもう数年やってから、考古学者になるのさ。それがこの作品の仕掛けってわけ。

そのためにどのように曲を作ろうとしたのですか？
A
まず、アートワークは素晴らしいイラストレーターである僕の弟、Daveに描いてもらった。僕ら2人が育った南ウェールズにあるガワー半島の景色なんだ。アルバムの多くは、自然と愛への再接続に関するものなので、子供時代のテーマが重要でもある。それと、それらと反対の曲は狂気と断絶について描かれている。歌詞は僕にとって重要はあるけれど、即興の傾向もあって、時には曲を覆い隠すことがある。僕は主に家でアルバムを作って、それから友人のJack Trotman にドラムを作入れてもらい、それをプロデュースしてもらうためにバンドメイトのJasperの家に持っていった。そして彼の家でシンセとヴォーカルを加えたんだ。彼は優秀なんだ。彼のプロジェクト、Bubble Peopleもチェックしてみて。僕らはアルバムを楽しんで作ったよ。
