♪PROFILE♪
Bodega is a post-punk band from Brooklyn, New York. Members are Ben Hozie, Nikki Belfiglio, Montana Simone, Madison Velding-Vandam and Heather Elle. In July 2018, the debut album ‘Endless Scroll’ was released. The song ‘Name Escape’ included in the work was selected by Hedi and used in the CELINE MEN ’S SS 2020 COLLECTION. In October 2019, MINI LP’Shiny New Model ’will be released.

This time, I will introduce Bodega, which attracted much attention by providing music to CELINE MEN ’S SS 2020 COLLECTION. This collection was a proposal that integrated four quadrants: Paris’s past (Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin) and Modern (Papooz), NY’s past (Ramones) and Modern (Bodega, David Kramer, The Lemon Twigs). I speculated that after Hedi retired from the previous brand, the next brand would treat NY as a theme. His fashion is closely related to the city. At that time he lived in LA but attended NY. He also documented local artists including James Chance. But what I was expecting was the Skater collection in NY.
Bodega was originally the band name Bodega Bay. This is a place name and refers to a town or location in Sonoma County, California. The area is also famous for filming the hitchcock movie ‘Bird’. But before debut, they shortened the name of Bodega Bay to Bodega. It seems that journalists often recognized it as a surf band because it included ‘Bay’ in the band name. They wanted to avoid it.
In 2018, the debut album ‘Endless Scroll’ was released. The songs were created by Ben and Nikki using acoustic guitars. Next, by playing in band formation, they made it sound like Bodega. The album was recorded and produced by Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) and mixed and mastered by Jonathan Schenke (The Drums). They are also particular about music videos. Vocal Ben is also a filmmaker who loves Godal.
What is the essence of Bodega? Is it post-punk, minimalism, or art rock? In fact, they apply to them. However, I don’t think it is essential. Then what? I think it’s a ‘Antinomy’. They do two contradictory things at the same time.
In terms of music, it has both a fresh performance and a calculated composition. Recording is a punk style that is recorded in 2 to 3 live performances. And also the production of music is well thought out. They repeat a one hour discussion every 5 minutes during the band’s composition stage. In that meeting, the chord progression, words, and how to play the instrument are limited so that Bodega sounds.
In the lyrics, they advocate the dangers and possibilities of the Internet at the same time. As the title of ‘Endless Scroll’, it appeals to people how endless Internet use can harm people. When they criticize the present day, they take the Internet seriously. However, they also suggest the possibility that people can create their own brands online. In the digital age, they urge that it is up to you to become a Slave or a Master.

The above is their theme. This is a antinomy in itself. In general, criticism is what others make others. However, they are preaching that it is worthwhile for people to critique themselves. It is also called metacognition. It is about recognizing one’s own thoughts and actions and is an indispensable ability for mental maturation.

今回、私はCELINE MEN’S SS 2020 COLLECTIONへの楽曲提供で話題を集めたBodegaを紹介します。このコレクションは、４つの象限＜Parisの過去（Serge Gainsbourg、Jane Birkin）と現代（Papooz）、NYの過去（Ramones）と現代（Bodega,David Kramer,The Lemon Twigs）＞を統合した提案でした。カッコ内のミュージシャンは例です。考察の詳細は、ショーにアートワークを提供したDavid Kramerの記事をご覧ください。

歌詞においては、彼らはインターネットの危険性と可能性を同時に提唱しています。’Endless Scroll’のタイトル通り、際限のないインターネット利用がいかに人に害を与えるかを人々に訴えかけます。彼らは現代を批評するにあたっては、インターネットを扱うのは避けられないと真面目に考えているのです。しかしながら彼らは同時に、人々がネット上で自分のブランドを作り出すことができるという可能性も示唆しています。彼らはデジタル時代においては、Slave（奴隷）になるのもMaster（支配者）になるのも君次第なのだよと訴えかけているのです。

上記は彼らのテーマです。これ自体が二立背反です。一般的に批評は、他者が他者にするものです。しかしながら彼らは、人々が自身を批評することに価値があると説いているのです。それはメタ認知と呼ばれるものでもあるのです。それは自分自身の思考や行動を対象化して認識することであり、心の成熟には欠かせない能力です。

We had a strict set of rules and restrictions when making this album. Using limited chords, colors, and language. Every idea had to be defended eloquently or it would not be used.

How did you try to make and arrange this song for the show?
A
They heard our song and asked us to make a 20 minute version. They gave us guidelines but gave us artistic freedom.
