楽曲で一番伝えたいことはどんなことですか？
A
もっとも大事にしていることは曲の持つメッセージや物語を、音楽や歌詞を使って、リスナーに伝えること。曲によって成り立ちが違うから、何についてかも異なってくるんだけど、メッセージが何であれ、僕らが歌っている感情のなかに、みんなを取り込んでしまいたいんだ。

どんなところにこだわって作っていますか？
A
どの曲も成り立ちがかなり違うんだよね。時々は一度にばっちりと全部ができることもあるし、形になる前に歌詞に２〜３週間かけることもある。アートワークや曲のビジョンについて言えば、曲を書くのがスタート地点だ。曲がうまく誘導してくれば、とても早く、簡単に、ミュージックビデオのアイディアが出てくるよ。

BlackWatersを曲名にした理由はなんですか？
A
あまり深い意味はなくって。ランダムに言葉を並べていたんだよね。そんなとき、OllieがBlack Watersを持ってきて今では定着しているんだ。

音楽を通して探求しているテーマはなんですか？
A
音楽的にテーマはあるんだけど、そのことはあえてあんまり言わないんだけ。僕らの曲を聴けば、Black Watersってわかる。でも、どの曲も異なることを伝えているみたいな。あるものは政治的あったり、別のは対人関係だったり、消費することについてだったり、全ての曲にテーマがあるんだ。

誰にインスパイアされていますか？
A
The Clash,、John Cooper Clarke and The Modern Loversなど古いアーティストに主に影響を受けている。今日のアーティストでは、FIDLAR, Palma Violetsやthe Arctic Monkeysに入れ込んでいるよ。

同時代のUKバンドでおすすめを教えてください。
A
最近のバンドもよく聴いてる。NMEなんかに声を大にして、そういったバンドを伝えたいね。Cabbage, The Moonlandingz と Shameは入れ込んでいる。Strange Bonesも見るに値するよ。インタビューありがとう。see you soon Tokyo.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners by songs?
A
The most important thing is to communicate the story of message of the tune, musically and lyrically. Every songs differently constructed and every song is about something different so whatever the message, we just hope people are able to take in the emotion of what we’re saying.

For that , how did you try to make songs?
A
Every songs differently constructed. Sometimes it’ll all fall into place at once or I’ll have a lyric for a few weeks before it becomes anything more. As For the artwork and vision of the song, that could be a starting point for writing the tune. If the song is well narrated it’s usually pretty quick and easy to think up a video idea.

Why did you choose BlackWaters as your band name?
A
There’s no deeper meaning or anything like that. We were putting random words together and Ollie came up with BlackWaters and now its stuck.

What is the theme you are looking for through making music?
A
I think there is a theme in our musicality but not so much in what we’re saying. When you hear one of our tunes you’ll know it’s a BlackWaters song but each ones saying something different. Whether it’s about politics, relationships or getting wasted all the songs have a sonic theme.

Who inspire you?
A
Mainly a lot of older artists such as The Clash, John Cooper Clarke and The Modern Lovers. People that are around today we are really into FIDLAR, Palma Violets and the Arctic Monkeys.

Please let me know that the contemporary band you recommend in the UK.
A
All we do is listen to up and coming bands nowadays and I just want to give a shout out to SoYoung magazine as they are everything that the NME should be. In terms of up and coming bands we really dig Cabbage, The Moonlandingz and Shame. Strange Bones are worth a look in as well.Cheers for the interview see you soon Tokyo.
