PROFILE
Billy Tibbals is a singer/songwriter who moved from London to Los Angeles in 2014. The band of his solo project includes Tristan Dean on guitar, Darby O’Mahony on bass, and Reza Matin on drums. Billy is 21 years old* and writes the lyrics for all of his work. His debut single ‘Onwards And Upwards’ was produced by Reza of Uni Boys, who joined the band as drummer.

Q
Which artists and bands have influenced your sound?
A
I think that maybe the bands that have influenced me the most we’re the ones I heard as a small child. Bands like Queen, The Beach Boys, The Clash and The Who are definitely very deeply lodged in my brain. In high school I started to really delve deep down several genre rabbit holes and listened to just about anything and everything I could find. I’m still constantly looking for new music to turn me on. All of that stuff has bled into the mix too. I’ve never really sat down and said ‘I’m gonna make my song sound like this’ or whatever. It’s always just whatever comes out naturally. Influence stew.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through the debut single?
A
That’s a tough question! The lyrics on the verses are about a falling out I had with a friend of mine. We wanted to start a band together, take over the world!! Teenage rock and roll dreams and all that. He gave up on those aspirations. I suppose the message of the song is sort of the knowing that there are alway gonna be better times ahead when times are a tuff ‘Onwards And Upwards!’.

A
一番影響を受けたバンドは、小さい頃に聴いたバンドかもしれない。Queen、The Beach Boys、The Clash、The Whoといったバンドは、間違いなく僕の脳裏に深く刻み込まれているよ。高校時代には、様々なジャンルを深く掘り下げるようになり、ありとあらゆるものを聴くようになった。今でも常に新しい音楽を探している。そのようなことがミックスされているのだと思う。けれど、「この曲はこういうサウンドにしよう」とか、そういうことは考えたことがないんだ。いつも自然に出てくるものばかり。影響のシチューだよ。

デビュー・シングルを通じてリスナーに一番伝えたいことは何でしょうか？
A
それは難しい質問だね。詩の内容は、友人と喧嘩した時の話。一緒にバンドを始めて、世界征服をしたかったんだ！ 10代のロックンロールの夢というか。彼はそんな願望を諦めた。この曲のメッセージは、苦しい時ほど、必ず良いときが来ることを知ることだと思う。
