Automatic is a three-member female band by Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) and Halle Saxon (bass, vocals). The band has been active in LA since 2017. Their wonderful live show drew attention and quickly they became the mainstay of the LA Club Circuit. Their song ‘Calling It’ has been selected as the soundtrack for CELINE WOMEN SS 2020 SHOW. And they released their 1st LP ‘Signal’ in September 2019.

’Calling It’ for CELINE WOMEN SS 2020 SHOW

Automatic is a three-member female band from LA. Noteworthy is that they are bands without guitar. Therefore, their music is very rhythmic. Rhythm is also an important point for Hedi when selecting music for a show. Originally, Izzy was a guitar and Halle was a bass part in other bands. In 2017, when Lola (drums) joined them and started Automatic, Izzy change her part form a guitar to a synthesizer.

I think Automatic is a very unique band. Their band’s name borrowed from a song from an American girl band The Go-Gos that gained popularity in the 80s. As can be inferred from this, they are conscious that they are women’s bands. On the other hand, they are also strongly influenced by Suicide (NY) and Neu! (Germany), who were both active in the 70’s. The sounds of these bands are characterized by being genderless and mechanical. Also from the words ‘Automatic’ (band name) and ‘Signal'(LP’s title), we do not feel gender. They create a new style of women’s band by symbolically using femininity while maintaining mechanical coolness.It can be said that those intentions have come to fruition in this work ‘Signal’. Among songs, ‘Suicide In Texas’ sounds exactly like the female version of Suicide.

By the way, Lola Domp’s father is Kevin Haskins (drums) from the UK band Bauhaus. The song ‘I Love You, Fine’ by Automatic reminded me of the sound of Jeff Fribourg’s solo project Numbe.er. Jeff is a fan of Bauhaus. This is very interesting. I also guess that the artwork for Single’Calling It ‘ is based on that of Bauhaus.

Izzy studied film at college and Halle worked for Kim’s Video, a cult video store in New York. The movies by David Lynch and Dario Argento had a strong influence on them. As a result, their music videos and album artwork are as compelling as music. Please check them out too.

AutomaticはLA出身の3人編成の女性バンドです。 注目すべきは彼女達が、ギターが不在のバンドだということです。そのため、楽曲が非常にリズミカルなことが特徴。リズムについては、Hediがショーの音楽を選定する際に、重要視するポイントでもあります。もともとIzzyはギター、Halleはベースのパートで、別のバンドを組んでいました。2017年、その2人がドラムスのLolaともに、Automaticをスタートする際、Izzyはギターからシンセサイザーへとパートを変更しました。

Automaticは非常に独特なバンドだと思います。バンドの名前が、80年代に人気を集めたアメリカのガールズバンド、The Go-Gosの曲から拝借したことからも推測されるように、彼女達は自分達が女性のバンドであることに意識的です。その一方彼女達は、ともに70年代に活躍したSuicide（NY）や、Neu!（ドイツ）のようなジェンダーを感じさせないサウンドからも強い影響を受けています。’Automatic’（バンド名）や’Signal’（LPのタイトル）という言葉もまたジェンダーを感じさせません。彼女達は、機械的なクールさを保ちつつ、女性らしさを象徴的に使用することで、新しい女性バンドのスタイルを創造しているのです。それらの意思が結実したのが本作’Signal’と言えるでしょう。中でも’Suicide In Texas’はまさに、女性版のSuicideといったサウンドです。

ところで、Lola Dompの父親は、UKのバンドBauhausのKevin Haskins（ドラムス）です。Automaticの曲’I Love You,Fine’は私に、Jeff FribourgのソロプロジェクトNumbe.erのサウンドを思い出させました。JeffはBauhausのファンなのです。これは非常に興味深いです。また、Single’Calling It’のアートワークはBauhausのそれをモチーフにしてるいのでは、、と思います。

Izzyは大学で映画を学び、HalleはNew YorkのカルトビデオストアであるKim’s Videoで働いていました。David LynchとDario Argentoらの映画は彼女達に強い影響を与えたようです。そのため、彼女達のミュージックビデオやアルバムのアートワークも、音楽同様に非常に魅力的です。ぜひチェックしてみてください。

What are the themes you are exploring through making music?
A
Our music tends to explore themes of isolation and finding community within that. However most of our songs are written organically without preconceived intentions.

Why did you choose Automatic your band name?
A
We got it from a song by The Go-Gos.

Who inspires you?
A
When we wrote this LP , we were listening to a lot of Kraut Rock, Neu! etc. Also this late 70s Swiss female band Kleenex/ Liliput. Also 70s NYC punk like Suicide and also Martin Rev’s solo stuff.

What is the most important thing that you want to communicate to listeners through this LP?
A
One thing to know might be that our message is not solely conveyed through the lyrics, but also the through the whole sound, so we’d like for people to think of it as a whole like that. And we especially want girls to feel inspired to make music and not be afraid to go for it.

How did you try to make songs for that?
A
It all happened very organically. We would get in the room together and start jamming, recording everything we came up with on our phones. Whatever we liked the most would get demo’d and arranged on the computer. The lyrics were usually written based on the feeling of the other instruments, and added last. Then we headed into our cozy tape studio with our friend and engineer/producer Joo-Joo Ashworth(Froth) to finalize the tracks.

How did you try to make and arrange ‘Calling It’ for the show?
A
We worked with our friend and producer joo joo Ashworth. It took a lot of back and forth with Celine and we added instruments that we usually don’t use. It was a fun challenge!

How did you feel after CELINE show?
A
It was very exciting! That was also the same day our album came out. We were on our phones all day..

このLPを制作している時には、 Neu!をはじめクラウトロックをたくさん聴いたわ！　あと70年代後半のスイスの女性バンドKleenex / Liliputも。それから、Suicideのような70年代のNYCパンクや、（同バンドの）Martin Revのソロもね。

このLPを通じてリスナーに伝えたい最も重要なことは何ですか？
A
知ってもらえたらなと思うことの1つは、私達のメッセージが歌詞だけでなく、音全体を通して伝えられているということかな。そして、特に女の子達に、私達が音楽を作ることにインスピレーションを感じてもらって、自分たちもそれをやることを怖がらなくてもいいんだよってもらえたらなとも思ってるの。

そのための曲をどのように作ろうとしましたか？
A
制作はとても自然なものだった。一緒に部屋に入ってジャムを始め、思いついたすべてを電話に記録していった。私達が一番好きなものは何でも、コンピューターでデモされ、アレンジされていくの。歌詞は通常、他の楽器の感じに影響されて書かれ、最後に追加されていくわね。その後、友人でありエンジニア／プロデューサーのJoo-Joo Ashworth（Froth）と一緒に居心地の良いスタジオに向かい、トラックを仕上げたわ。

A
私たちは友人でプロデューサーのjoo joo Ashworthと一緒に制作したの。Celineとのやり取りには多くの時間がかかり、普段なら使用しない楽器を加えました。 楽しい挑戦だったわ！

Celineのショーの後はどう感じましたか？
A
とてもエキサイティングだった！ アルバムがリリースされた同じ日でもあったし。一日中電話にかかりっきりだったくらい。
